I've wondered that myself for many years.
I can only think of two possibilities:
A. They were unaware of the colloquial usage of the term AC/DC and just liked the sound of it
B. They wanted to give out the message "we are a bisexual rock band".
So which one was it?

I saw an interview recently with Brian Johnson and Angus Young...Angus said they saw the label "AC/DC" on a power box or something and decided on that name.
I always doubted that it meant they were bi...at least they were not as obvious about it as Rob Halford ::).
