Subject: Crazy Don's '50's/'60's first lines quiz(complete)
QUIZ OVER--THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I'm a big fan of Dick Bartley's Saturday-night call-in oldies show Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits and I have noticed a few first-line quizzes on this board lately. If you are a faithful listener, every hour he has a contest called "What's My Line." It's where you have to guess the song from the first line of the song. This is my version. All of the following are 1950's and 1960's songs in which I have given you the first line of the song. All you have to do is tell me the song from which it came. This is going to be tough if you don't know your oldies. Here goes:
(cs/JC) 1. My tears are falling
Take Good Care of My Baby--Bobby Vee
(Yes, I would have accepted Bobby Vinton, who remade this song in the late 1960's.)
(pb) 2. Oh yeah, I'll tell you something
I Want to Hold Your Hand--The Beatles
(pb) 3. Set me free, why don'tcha babe
You Keep Me Hangin' On--The Supremes
(NOTE: FBVP, your answer of "Vanilla Fudge" is also acceptable.)
(quahog/FBVP)4. Left a good job in the city
Proud Mary--Creedence Clearwater Revival
(Sorry, since I was looking for a 1960's artist here, couldn't have accepted Ike & Tina Turner. But then their version does not begin "Left a good job in the city.")
(FBVP) 5. Now if you feel like you can't go on
Reach Out I'll Be There--The Four Tops
(FBVP) 6. I love him, I love him
I Will Follow Him--Little Peggy March
(quahog/FBVP) 7. When the moon is in the seventh house
Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In--The 5th Dimension
(A/quahog) 8. Go away from my window
It Ain't Me Babe--The Turtles
(Bob Dylan wrote and recorded it, but didn't have the hit with it. Johnny Cash had the country hit with it)
(FBVP) 9. The local rock group down the street
Pleasant Valley Sunday--The Monkees
(pb) 10. In the town where I was born
Yellow Submarine--The Beatles
(chris) 11. You might wake up some morning
Elusive Butterfly--Bob Lind
(FBVP) 12. Give me a ticket for an aeroplane
The Letter--The Box Tops
(Could have accepted Joe Cocker or The Arbors for the artist)
(cs/chris) 13. You keep sayin' you got something for me
These Boots Are Made for Walkin'--Nancy Sinatra
(pb/Tao) 14. You shake my nerves
Great Balls of Fire--Jerry Lee Lewis
(cs/JC) 15. I know you wanna leave me
Ain't Too Proud to Beg--The Temptations
(Sorry, could not accept "Rolling Stones" as their version came out in the 1970's and I was looking for a 1960's artist)
(pb/Tao) 16. Get your motor runnin'
Born to Be Wild--Steppenwolf
(Tao) 17. I got sunshine on a cloudy day
My Girl--The Temptations
(JC) 18. I was all right for a while
Crying--Roy Orbison
(Tao) 19. When you're alone and life is making you lonely
Downtown--Petula Clark
(chris/Bobo) 20. I saw her today
Needles & Pins--The Searchers
(FBVP) 21. You know that it would be untrue
Light My Fire--The Doors
(Could have accepted José Feliciano for the artist)
(quahog/JC) 22. You made me cry
Ain't That a Shame--Fats Domino
(Actually, Pat Boone's cover was a bigger hit, but then, who remembers Pat Boone's version? And BTW, the actual title of Fats Domino's original was "Ain't It a Shame" but since he sings "Ain't that a shame"…)
(JC) 23. Some girls like to run around
She'd Rather Be with Me--The Turtles
(A) 24. I've lost at love before
You've Made Me So Very Happy--Blood, Sweat & Tears
(quahog/pb) 25. In the jungle
The Lion Sleeps Tonight--The Tokens
(Sorry, could not accept Robert John as his version came out in 1972 and I was looking for a 1960's artist.)
This quiz is now over. Thank you very much.

#2 - I wanna hold your hand, the Beatles
#3 - Keep me hanging on, can't remember who by - Diana Ross?
#10 - Yellow Submarine, The Beatles
#14 - Great Balls of Fire, Chuck Berry (or was it Little Richard?)
#15 - Born to be Wild, Lynnerd Skynnerd (makes me think, was #3 Kim Wilde? I know she did the song, but I thought it was a cover version)

#'s 2 and 10 are correct. #3, you had the lead singer but I'm gonna give this one to you--it's by the Supremes.
#'s 14 and 15--you have the correct song, but the wrong artists. A hint on #15--the group's name is the title of a Herman Hesse novel. And on #14, a biographical film of the singer of the song bears the same name of the song made famous by the singer depicted.

D'Oh! Phil tries to wake up and do some work (fails miserably, then comes back and types this). Of course Born to be Wild is Steppenwolf. But I knew I had to type quickly, knowing that Tao was on the trail ;-)
