Subject: Crazy Don's short 1960's lyrics quiz, part 2
OK, folks, now it's time for another short 1960's lyrics quiz. Whenever a correct answer is given, the artist and title will be seen underneath each line, with the first provider of the correct answer's initials given. Here goes:
1. You've got the greatest thing since rock and roll
The Turtles--You Baby (PB)
2. Some day my name and hers are going to be the same
The Hollies--Bus Stop (FBVP)
3. You know the preacher likes the cold
The Mamas & the Papas--California Dreamin' (LBB/FBVP)
4. And the white knight is talking backwards
Jefferson Airplane--White Rabbit (Zel)
5. His son is working for the Daily Mail
The Beatles--Paperback Writer (FBVP)
(NOTE: It's London's Daily Mail, not the Charleston (WV) Daily Mail, BTW. Just wanted to throw that in.)
6. It's like thunder and lightning
Eddie Floyd--Knock on Wood (Zel/PB)
7. But even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'
Barry McGuire--Eve of Destruction (FBVP)
8. I guess if you say so/I'll have to pack my things and go
Ray Charles--Hit the Road, Jack (PB)
9. Just try the Quasimodo or the coffin, too
Jan & Dean--Sidewalk Surfin' (LBB)
10. I was campaign shoutin' like a Southern diplomat
Chuck Berry--Nadine (Gam)
This quiz is now closed since all the correct answers have been given. Thank you very much.

Number 9 is Sidewalk Surfin' by Jan and Dean, tune written for the Beach Boys song Catch A Wave on the Surfer Girl/ShutDown twofer.
Number 3 is California Dreamin' by The Beach Boys (previously of The Mammas and the Pappas?)

Actually, I would like to see if I can override Bobo's answer by stating that # 3 (California Dreamin') is in fact by the Mamas and Papas, and not the Beach Boys
(Sorry Bobo)
FBVP :)

#3 is by the Mamas & the Papas (or as the group's name appeared on the original 45, "The Mama's and the Papa's"), so I'm giving that to you.
You're also right about #9, the first (and probably only?) song written about skateboarding…

#4. White Rabbit -- Jefferson Airplane
Is it okay to name the song if I don't know the artist? I know the thunder & lightning one. ???

#6 is "Knock on Wood" but whoever figures out the artist can take the credit--'cus I don't know who sings it. :(

Number 8 is "Hit the road Jack" by Ray Charles - I've got a parody to that one on Amiright, so I d**n well ought to recognize it ;-) (for anyone who's interested, it's at: http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/raycharles0.shtml)
I have "Knock on Wood" written by "Amii Stewart" in one case and "Eddie Floyd" in another... was Amii Stewart the first to release the song, and Eddie Floyd the composer?
Phil
PS I've got a parody to "California Dreaming", too, but Bobo got there with the answer first ;-)

"Hit the Road, Jack" by Ray Charles is the correct answer for #8 and you got #6 right, too--it's "Knock on Wood" by Eddie Floyd. He did the original version. Amii Stewart did the disco remake in the late 1970's.

Here are some hints on the remaining two:
#1 is by a group named after a reptile.
#10 is the comeback single for this rock & roll legend after he was jailed on morals charges.
More hints to come if these don't help you.

I thought you were talking T-Rex for a moment, there (except, of course, dinosaurs aren't true reptiles :-))
I came across the answer in another lyrics quiz - You Baby, by the Turtles
