Subject: My vacation pics! (and some stories behind them)
Written By: Henk on 09/11/10 at 9:17 am
As promised, here are some of my vacation pictures. Not an awful lot, because I didn't make a lot (due to the bad weather).
We (i.e. my father, my younger brother, my youngest sister and I) stayed in a former coach house in the village of Rijssen (province of Overijssel). That's in the east of our country. The coach house was sort of an annex to the house nextdoor, so we overlooked their back garden. We had virtually no view to the front (just the entrance with a drive that lead directly to the street) and there were no windows in the back. But that was about the least of our troubles... ::) Being a relatively old building meant that literally EVERYTHING in the house was askew. Walls, doors, floors, cupboards... you name it. You couldn't leave a door open, because it would either fall back into the lock or open wide and slam into whatever was standing/lying behind it. Apart from that, it was very small and croppy, the furniture was dated and the house was leaky as we found out on the very first Sunday (and the following Thursday).
But somehow, we managed to cope, mainly because the owner/landlord was a very kind and generous man. And in his defence: we did have an unprecedented amount of rain in those first days of our vacation, so he wasn't to blame.
I'm sorry - no pictures of the house. I just forgot to take any. :( In fact, I didn't take any pictures during our first week because the weather wasn't being cooperative. To give you an impression: on the second Sunday, temperatures had dropped to 13°C/55°F, so we had to wear sweaters AND turn up the heat.
Still, we went out and about as much as possible - which meant we did quite some shopping. My brother and sister even managed to do some cycling in the area, on one of those rare sunnier days.
The weather improved somewhat during our second week, thank goodness. We did some hiking, some more cycling (sadly, it was raining that day) and some more shopping of course. ::) We even went to a nearby IKEA where we had lunch. I bought some scented candles there.
Enough talk! Here's the pictures...
No wait. I'll have to resize them. :P

OK, let's see what they look like...
This is one I took while we were eating our sandwiches. Those clouds look eerie...

Here's some pictures of a beautiful water mill ("Den Haller"). As you can tell by the second one, the sun was shining! :o

A windmill as it should be...

...and one being reconstructed (luckily). According to the signs, it should be ready in 2012.

The final 6 pictures are of me hiking with my brother nearby the Holterberg.
The day started out overcast, but it gradually improved (tho' you can't always tell from the pictures).

This must be one of my faves. It looks like we're way up high, but the elevation is actually only about 60m./197ft.

Nice Pics. It's what I remember parts of Europe to be like. I like the water mill photo.

Thanks Frank. :) I like the water mill too. I've actually taken 6 or 7 at that location, but I think these two are the best.

Yeah, I agree.
I really like the second of the water mill. I love how the green of the grass pops and the way the water is reflecting. Just wonderful composition.

Beautiful! I especially love the first one where you and your brother hiked. That lovely green path and the wonders it leads to....
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Ash! You're too kind... Me in any picture would just ruin the view, IMHO. ;)

Nice a-hike, Henk, and truly wonderful pics as well.
I agree the breathtaking cloudy flag-like skies seem to have sprung from a painter's palette, pal. ;)
As for me, I'm gonna keep this fantastic old windmill, you brought in to my delight.
I can also see how flat your country is. Now I understand why too many of your country folks went to visit my hilly, and somhow deserted little country of Spain.
;)
Thanks Henk,
Paco, a soppy sailor

I got some days outdoors, I went up to the mountains as usual, and that's what I saw :
http://picasaweb.google.es/chezpacogomez/ALEspelunguereEnCotoyantLaFrontiere?authkey=Gv1sRgCKjnlK-kuOymcg#
For a few days I was out and apart of something called civilization. No noise, no rush, only the voice of God ( my own personal God )
I've been wandering ridges, brooks and meadows with the only company of Mother Nature.
Well, I come back again to say hello my penguins friends ;)

I always willing to share Howard. ;)

Well Howard you picked just the one I actually have on my screen these days, nice coincidence pal ;)
As for the captions Bookmistress4ever, I try to unveil and convey my very real feelings as I get there.
I hope I did it good in this attempt ::)
