Subject: March SOTM 2008 RESULTS POSTED
Written By: skittlesking on 04/08/08 at 11:28 pm
Note to new participants: Welcome, and good luck. Please read all guidelines carefully. Especially, please make sure to read all the entries and vote by the end of the month. The SOTM is not so much a contest as a feedback exchange. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, either in this thread or via personal message. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
~~Vote by replying to this thread with your five favorites in order:
1st choice- 5 points
2nd place- 4 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th place- 1 point.
~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.
~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.
~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.
~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.
~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.
~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.
~~In the event of a tie, the parody with the most first place votes wins.
If it's still tied, the parody with the most second place votes wins.
If it's still tied, a brief playoff round will be held.
All participants will have the first week of the month to choose one favorite from among the tied entries.
Tiebreaker voting is strongly encouraged but not required. On the eighth day the one with the most votes wins.
~~Any entrant whose votes don't show a time stamp prior to midnight on the last day of the month (ie. according to the "inthe00's meantime" clock as it appears BEFORE you log in - not a timezone corrected version) is disqualified, without exception.

Hey Dave, I like how you titled the links for the videos...gives you a fair warning as to the OS (where needed).
I'm gonna have to remember to use the html code for links more often... 8)

Except that you labeled mine "OPP" which I did not even take a crack at yet... That song is going to be a LOT harder than "ABC" which I DID. ::) (And you edited it) ;)

Well, thanks you guys for thinking of me.....
You've probably noticed that I haven't been around much lately. At the moment, I'm right in the middle of producing a play (Dial M For Murder), so that's taking up most of my time. I usually have a bit of down time from writing and contests at the start of the year....and I didn't feel the 2 aforementioned parodies were quite SOTM worthy. But I will be back!!!

4 points to Guy - This one was so weird it deserves high marks.
McKludge - I had no earthly idea - I think I understand what you mean by being out in the desert with poor internet access. God Bless you sir and thanks for the fine comments you made on amiright on my parody. In case you have missed my many comments expounding my 21 plus years of military service to the US, now you will know if you can get some access. I have been an IT professional since 1969 at 17 years old - that makes me almost as old as John McCain but not quite - heh heh. I'm in your corner sir and I support what you are all about and thanks!!! This old airman appreciates your contributions. Been there, done that and my PT tee shirt was run over by a guy in an Army jeep, the putz - heh heh. Just glad I wasn't in it when he ran it over.
I work with a guy on an Army base who is going on 85 years old and is a DOD civilian. He was on Utah beach on D-Day attached to a chemical mortar brigade. He lost his hearing from mortar blasts to his ears. He has all the orders his unit was issued from June 6, 1944 to whenever in April of 1945 when VE day happened. I am currently trying to debreif him and his orders in order to write a biography on this fine individual. This man can run ten miles at 84 years old in 90 plus degree south Texas heat and not even break a sweat. His name is Fred Chapal and he is a true American hero - you are no less sir.

As much as I appreciate and echo the sentiment, the desert I am referring to is the Mohave Desert, not Iraq or Afghanistan. I am not nor have I ever been in the military, but I am out here for the week as a military contractor supporting battalion level training at the National Training Center which is 30 miles north of Barstow, California. Which is to say, it is 100 miles from nowhere. So I'm flattered at the concept, but I'm no hero. I'm just a systems engineer. But yes, our soldiers in the Middle East deserve our support.
My comment about "another month stuck in the desert" referred to the odd timing that the last three times I entered SOTM, voting time turned out to be when I was away from home and in the desert in California supporting this training. That's the bad thing about email and text-messaging. It is way too easy to misinterpret someone's posting and take it the wrong way, because you don't get the instant feedback of vocal inflection and body language. Luckily no harm done here.

McKludge - My mistake and I was tentative about what I was saying. I did realize that you could have been talking about the American desert, but I am glad that you are out of harms way. This does not change my image of you in the least. You are contributing to our freedom just the same. I am glad to have learned this about you and be proud that you are being part of the solution and not part of the problem. I still applaude you sir - train our troops well and help to keep them alive, safe and in one piece. You have military status IMO. Looking forward to chatting and commenting with you more in the future. Take care my friend and enjoy the desert on a horse with no name. Caio Brother.

WOW...My sincerest thanks to all who voted for me.
Congratulations to Phil and Red Ant
A special thanks to Agrimorfee for suggesting this OS and to Matthias for urging me to enter it for this contest.
If you will permit me...I had never heard of Schoolhouse Rock before this. I've since done some research, and found that the writer and vocalist for this song is Bob Dorough. Bob is a famous jazz singer who has recorded with many of the best. He's still alive and performing.
Anyway, Bob co-wrote and recorded a song called "Blue Xmas" with Miles Davis and John Coltrane. For years, in my home, I've had a policy that, when the time rolls around to start playing Christmas music, "Blue Xmas" is the first song that has to be played. It's a most excellent bash of the hypocrisy of the Holiday Season. I couldn't fine a link to the recording but here are the lyrics...
http://www.themadmusicarchive.com/song_details.aspx?SongID=2073
and here's Bob's website...
www.bobdorough.com
Again...Thanks

Never heard of Schoolhouse Rock? Wow. One of the sideline perks of amiright.com participation is discovering all types of music and performers and genres that one might never have discovered (The Cardiacs and Skyhooks were introduced to me here.)
I had the privilige of seeing Dorough perform for free in Chicago in a trio setting, where he performed a few standards, some of his regular tunes, and, of course "3 Is a Magic Number" and "Conjunction Junction", two of the most popular tracks in the Schoolhouse Rock canon. You might be interested IB, that through his jazz-world connections, vocalist Blossom Dearie contributed to tunes like "Figure 8" and "Unpack Your Adjectives" while drummer Grady Tate sang on "Naughty Number 9".
Anyway, I'm glad that this tune became such a success for you in our little world. We should all do more Schoolhouse Rock tunes!

It's probably an age thing. If you weren't a young'n in the mid to late seventies, you probably never saw it. I grew up on Saturday morning cartoons in the seventies, and Schoolhouse Rock stuff was always played between shows. I loved that stuff.
Oh yeah, congrats to all the winners. I didn't expect a lot out of my entry, so 5th place is quite nice. Thanks everyone.

Very well done invsboy and yes I should have given you 5 votes but you had it sowed up by the time I got around to voting so I decided to give my support to those authors who next deserved a title win. I gave you one point sir to show my solidarity otherwise it would have been a five, but you did not need my vote when I felt others did so I voted to give the lesser entries my support. IB you are a dynamite writer and you surley shined in this comp. My hat is off to you, This is indeed masterfully well done..
Phil, you done good my man. Excecllent on the typical man. Billy Joel is one of my most favored atists and his lyrics work well with my thought patterns of parody writing. You did well sir and my congrats.
Jack - Your tarted R & R was over the top as well Great bit of writing sir and my congrats to you.
Also my applause to all who have the cojones to enter one of these. Well done everyone!
