Decathlon: Mark 2
Event 6
http://ssbg.files.wordpress.com/2007/01/00soccer.jpg
Genre: Indie
Topic: Fashion/ Style
The Rules
1. Entry URLs to be posted onto this thread from the Amiright site
2. Entries must conform to both the topic and time specifications...if in doubt, ask.
3. On January 3rd the entries close and the voting begins
4. Vote by replying to voting thread with your five favorites in order:
Top choice gets 5 points, next gets 4 points and so on to 1 point for your fifth favourite.
5. You're not allowed to vote for your own song.
6. DKTOS, is not allowed as a comment whilest voting
7. Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.
8. Voting continues until January 16th
9. By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.
10. Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the deadline is 0-ed
11. If you miss a submission deadline, you will not be entered in that event, but WILL be allowed to enter the next event.
However, there will STILL be an expectation that you comment and vote in the event you are not participating in, unless you have a valid reason for not being able to.
13. Rule changes may be suggested by any participant in their entry post. Changes are made only when a majority of that event's voters specify a "yes" vote along with their contest votes.
Scoring: Like the rules, the scoring is similar to the to the Ages, awarding the winner first place, with 11 points. Person who comes in 2nd, Points and so on, and so forth...
HAVE FUN!!!

Basically any Independent Artist is up for parody in this round...
As for me I'm probably going to do something by "Ben Folds Five" or "The Polyphonic Spree".

Really, any band that is not signed by a MAJOR record label . . .is indie
By Major, I mean Major. . .Smaller labels are considered independent, I love Indie music as it is less commercial. Old Old Green Day was Indie, Old Offspring. . .We actually are all indie also. . .well those of us who record anyway. . .so indie is actually somewhat open
Looking forward to this round.

Oh and any non-parody by Spaff-Robert Lund (well I guess technically his parodies also) are indie, any by Phil Alexander, me, The CaCa Man, Exactly Midnight, the hoard of Soundclick (though some aren't indie, most are) just post it here if you are unsure, but indie is far more open than it may seem. . .and more creative usually than mainstream.

You can't parody yourself, it would just be another original song.

What an intriguing thought.. if I were famous, I'm sure I'd be into self-parody.

I was scanning the list of 'indie pop artists' and I found Gotye! His song 'Heart's A Mess' is awesome! The video is awesome (and trippy)! ANd the title just lends itself to the topic...'Hair's A Mess', anyone?

Ok
Well I'll take on Johnny McGovern's "Something for the Fellas"

Matty,
This is only a suggestion, but do you think it'd be worthwhile pushing the submission deadline to 1 week later (I think it's Jan. 3)...? This is the busiest time of the year, and I think people may struggle to find time to write their best work. And on an incredibly selfish note, I'm flying out to Australia this Friday for 3 weeks...so I'm going to find it tough to get an entry in for this round no matter what...but would appreciate the extra week
Whatever your decision, dude: is OK with me.....

Good call, Kristof. I didn't really look at my calendar until you brought that up!
Thanks, Matthias!.
EDIT: Scouring my author list of material, I got lots of "indie" bands, but that I don't have any that fit the theme. Nuts. Maybe it's time once again to seek out something no one has ever done, and wouldn't even dream of parodying. :o

I've decided not to do Johnny McGovern's Somethin' For the Fellas as the only video available to it . . .well it's not appropriate, and besides the song was hilarious to begin with. ..I'll figure out something, I love the genre as a whole.

uh oh, I've stuffed up again. I'm thinking I've got all January 3rd to submit, but I just remembered I don't.
I've written my parody "They Call Me The Posh Spice" to "They Call Me The Wild Rose" (aka "Where The Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave) but it's at home on my computer and I don't get bsack from our family summer holiday until midday January 3rd.
So I'll be throwing myself on your mercy Matty, and asking for a pre-first-vote late entry.
I will definitely have it published by the end of January 3rd though - either here or on New Submissions - it's completely written

Question... can we use any songs from an Indie artist after they were signed to a major label? They're still listed as Indie artists, but the song I wanna do was more a more mainstream single.

No, because Indie is defined as being a minor or no label at all, because almost every band started off as Indie so a Indie Artist that is a mainstream artist would not be considered Indie any longer. If you want to do a band's early work, before they were signed that would be Indie, but as soon as the Indie band has a major record label, or becomes mainstream they no longer fit under this genre. So sorry Mikey, no can do.

Well then, damn. I have nothing for this one. I feel musically retarted sometimes, not knowing any of these Indie bands. I suppose I could have winged it on a song I don't know, but I find it really hard to parody something I'm not familiar with.
I guess I'll be sitting this round out. Sorry, guys. :-[

Well, apparently both pronunciations are acceptable...with pretentious folks favouring the former. ;)
For the sake of this parody, I'm going for PLUS fours....mainly because it gave me more scope for rhyming

It still bugs me that Dean Ween could not do the proper "You like to flyyyyy" refrain in any of the performances that I viewed on the Tube. I hope it doesn't bug anyone else.
