Subject: October Song of the Month Voting -- Closed, results posted

Written By: Claude_Prez on 11/08/05 at 8:35 pm

Note to new participants: Welcome, and good luck. Please read all guidelines carefully. Especially, please make sure to read all the entries and vote by the end of the month. The SOTM is not so much a contest as a feedback exchange. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, either in this thread or via personal message. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

~~Vote by replying to this thread with your five favorites in order:
1st choice- 5 points
2nd place- 4 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th place- 1 point.

~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.

~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.

~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.

~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.
~~Voters are strongly encouraged to leave at least a brief comment on every parody, to prove they've at least clicked on them all. Failure to do so will not result in official consequences, but will indicate to others that you're not interested in receiving comments either

~~In the event of a tie, the parody with the most first place votes wins.
If it's still tied, the parody with the most second place votes wins.
If it's still tied, a brief playoff round will be held.
All participants will have the first week of the month to choose one favorite from among the tied entries.
Tiebreaker voting is strongly encouraged but not required. On the eighth day the one with the most votes wins.

Before we begin, we have a rule change proposal, which is to replace the highlighted section with the following:

~~By entering, you are agreeing to read and comment on all the other entries and vote.

~~Anyone who enters but does not both comment on all entries and vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.

So when you cast your regular SOTM votes, please indicate a Yes or No to the rule change proposal.  Thank you.

Josh, today is only the 10:th, you got 20 more days to familiarize yourself with those original songs you don't know, that's one of the points with a month-long voting period.

Well, you had 20 days, because the rules says that votes cannot be changed, but I strongly recommend that for NEXT months SOTM you try to use that period, if you want those here that do not know your OS to put in such effort before judging your entry.

Agri, how can you justify basing your votes on the wit, pacing, rhyme and creativity of a parody? Why, many people go out of their way to do an OS that everyone knows to ensure themselves a vote in the SOTM and you completely undermine this system!

LOL! ;D

I think he's just trying to build a reputation, the kind of reputation that will ensure forever that he never, ever, ever will be asked to run for public office. (Unless it's a public lavatory and by his own choice). :P

I dunno, it seems to me the way that's the way things have always been. Calling attention to it just makes it clear to everyone who is lazy about the commitment to judging fairly that they might get karmic retribution.

I just didn't want to get the kind of admonishment that Josh2 is getting by voting early. I'm voting with a clear-conscience, as I always have, and decided to say so since it seems to be on everyone's minds lately.

Admonishment? Interesting, is that how it's read? I though of it as friendly encouragement to improve and to use the full timeframe that is allowed.

Note to Self: In the future, withhold urge to post such comments/replies right away and save that until the last day or two of the month. :P

Claude et al!

Regardless of the outcome of the supposed rule change, how about just making a little layout improvement by adding some air between the "paragraphs". I wouldn't go as far as to call myself an expert, but I do have some experience in the field of how to get people to pick up on what's written in informational texts, and empty lines between important parts (as exemplified in the dismembered quote here above) are one of the first things I try when something has to be taken back to the drawing board. Just a suggestion. Feel free to ignore it if you don't like it.

No, I like it.  And I don't think we even have to vote on it.

While I'm here, though, I wanted to weigh in on this whole admonishment issue.

Personally, though I always appreciate it and download a DKTOS when someone provides the link, I never go and look for it myself.

I feel that if I want everyone to know my song, it would be up to me to make it easy for them.

If someone wants to spend the month searching for their DKTOS's, that's their choice, but I don't expect it.

Really, I'm just happy that Josh read, commented, and voted promptly.

I wish I were motivated to vote that promptly.

I should be more like Josh, voting-wise.

Hey, this double-spacing stuff is fun.

Every single thought I have looks more important this way.

~~It looks even more important if I use the squiggly thingies.

~~I wonder if these squiggly thingies have an official name.

~~If they do have a name, I wonder what it is.

~~And whose job it was to think of it.

~~Also, what are the odds anyone is still reading this?

~~I could do this all day long.

~~Maybe not.

~~Okay, I'm gonna go modify my guidelines now.

~~I thank you for this outstanding suggestion.

okay re the proposed rule change

I haven't decided whether to vote for it yet, but I have a great test case at hand, which supports the case AGAINST the new rule (AND against my tongue-in-cheek Grudge Rule)

Personally, I'm not TOO fussed about not getting lengthy feedback, although I love getting it of course. But I do want to know that my entry was read (and maybe considered) before someone decided their votes - so for me a "SOTM - I read it" is enough to suggest that...

anyway, I was very pleased :D to receive votes in this month's SOTM from Agrimorfee, who'd obviously read my entry and considered it worthy.

However, although he commented on all other entries (I didn't check, but I recall a long list of SOTMs from him on the Latest Comments) he forgot to leave a comment on mine.

This was CLEARLY an oversight, as he'd followed all the rules otherwise.

However, if he hadn't included mine in his votes, I would have thought he hadn't even visited mine, and according to the new rule he would be disqualified from next month.  And I admit that under my Draconian "Grudge Rule" (evil music) he would also have been unfairly treated.

This is the can of worms that would be opened if the new rule was voted in - because there would be a lot of "but it was just an oversight - I didn't realise" pleas, that would make Claude's job of deciding DQs very subjective and difficult.

I find myself going back to thinking that the karma should be administered personally allowing for such single oversights, or if there was a rule change, it should include a way of overlooking obvious oversights (such as above)

(and btw, thanks for the read and the votes, Agri - sorry to use you to make a point, and I wouldn't have normally, but it's too critical and relevant a point not to raise)

First, I vote FOR the rule change.  My SOTM parodies are not of the type that win (facts of life, not boo-hooing  ;D), so I depend on comments and votes on the parody itself to give me some feedback.

My picks this month are:

5 points to Rick C.  #12

4 points to Phil Alexander #18

3 points to Spaff #17

2 points to Kristof #13

1 point to Red Ant #2

Good parodies everyone!

I'm totally with Claude here...I have, on occasion, looked up a DKTOS to judge a parody...but it's my experience that, at least I, with my feeble mind, usually enjoy/vote for the parodies where I already knew the OS. Because then it's just effortless fun. And maybe that means I'm lazy. But I'm adorable, so it doesn't matter.

Either way...I don't expect people to look up my OS's...nor do I take offense when they just admit that they don't know them.

Back when I was in primary school and everyone was addicted to that SimpleText program which read out what you typed, I always loved to amaze others by typing "Waltzing Ma~" and having Marvin or one of the other whimsical accents go "Waltzing Ma Tilde".

...cuz that's what the little squiggly thing ~ is called. A 'tilde'.

~~That's pretty amazing that I ask what I think is a stupid random question that probably nobody knows the answer to.

~~And there's already a whole parody about it.

~~Yet I notice no parody about whose job it was to come up with the name "tilde".

~~So let's get on the stick then.

~~What kind of phrase is "get on the stick", anyway?

~~Who came up with that?

~~If I were looking for a "get on the stick" parody, I'd go straight to WhatFreaks.

~~And that's all I have to say about that.

I vote in favor of the proposed rule change.

Oh, the songs.  ;) This was another difficult month to pick only 5 songs out since my 'shortlist' was 9 songs. You guys and girls had an outstanding month's worth of entries, many to OSs that just thinking of parodying them gives me migraines due to difficulty. So, without further delay, my picks are as follows:

5 points to Kristof's "Matrimonay!"
4 points to Dee's " I Would Do Anything When Drunk(But I Won't Do That)
3 points to Arwen's "Drip Dryin' Today"
2 points to Ethan's "Poor Party Planning"

shouldnt those woh havent voted vote, seeing as there is only 5 days of november left?
Since there are still some days of November left, I intend to use some, or all, of those days to read and re-read parodies in this month's SOTM competition. I will vote when I am satisfied that I will be able to give a fair vote. So, I'm a slow reader.

These parodies were submitted because the authors felt they were important. (although my entry here was the only one I submitted to Amiright in October, hmmmmm?)

If I DKTOS and, the author provides links, I follow the links. I will only comment that I DKTOS if I DKTOS and the author has not provided links. I resent seeing a DKTOS in SOTM when I have provided links. I read and comment on every parody and, double-check to make sure the comment appears.

If I'm sounding like a goody-two shoes, I don't care. To me, this is an important competition and that's how I would like others to consider my work. I am a contender but, I am also a judge. Judges need to be fair to all in the competition. It doesn't take a whole lot of extra time to do this but, it may sometimes take all of the days in the given month.

Taking your time with it will eliminate almost any chance that you have missed a comment so, if you are disqualified because you rushed to get through it, hard lesson learned.

I am for the rule change but, will vote later.

Like Tim, I thought this month's deciding started off easily, as my first 3 picked themselves, but then the usual gut-wrenching agonising....

5 points..................13.  Matrimonay!      by Kristof Robertson
4 points..................17.  Eat The French        by Spaff.com
3 points..................12.  Don't Whine At Me  Angelina        by Rick Cormier
2 points....................2.  Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel Fight!      by Red Ant
1 point...................15.  I Would Do Anything When Drunk(But I Won't Do That)    by Dee Range

I vote FOR the rule change of course, but I take this chance to reiterate the concerns I raised earlier in this thread that it could create more problems than it solves (and all of them problems for Claude to deal with) if too many people keep pleading "I definitely read that one but somehow forgot to comment" - which will happen given the severity of the punishment for forgetting to post just ONE comment, ie. disqualification - it means everyone has to be extra-vigilant and check twice that they've commented on every entry, or else be prepared to throw themselves at Claude's mercy :o

No, the deadline is usually whenever I get around to closing the voting thread and counting up the totals; in this case probably around noon or so tomorrow.  An extension isn't completely unheard of, either.

Congratulations to Spaff, Rick, and Red Ant.  For coming in first, Spaff will receive a lifetime supply of the new Robert Lund cd, "Workin' The Glory"; available NOW at, um, spaff.com.  Offer void in Utah.  Great job all.  Hate to disqualify Luke; he's usually good about this.  At least he was the only one this month.  I'll be updating the Parody Author of the Year standings soon too, in case anyone is wondering.  Thanks again to everyone who participated.

Congratulations first to Spaff. You write too well for your own good sometimes. Or maybe I should have taken French in school. Anyways, great win.

Rick, congratulations on second place, your second of the year. Top quality recording too. Much better than TOS.

Congratulations to Claude for a great parody that came within a pube of pushing me out of 3rd.

Thanks to everyone else for this months SOTM entries, there were too many great ones that I wanted to award points to. It did take me pretty much all month to make my choices.

And, thanks to all that voted for my parody. Happy Holidays, and see everyone next month.

Thanks, Johnny BD, but I won't be content until I can get you to drop the "Hemi-Demi-Semi-Quasi-Pseudo" qualifier. And thank you to everyone else too. I cherish the warm fuzzies I get from this site, so I'm glad I can sucker y'all into giving 'em to me.

Congrats to Rick, the Amirighter I vote Most Likely To Succeed, and to Red Ant, the Amirighter I vote Most Likely to Get Kicked in the Scrotum by Either Simon or Garfunkel.

And Stuart, as for my "diminishing figure"? Two words: light beer.

Congratulations to the pretty much unstoppable Spaff, the mighty Rickster, and Mr Ant, whose tale of folky violence really tickled me. Wonderful entries, each and every one. The year's almost over...it's been a beaut, hasn't it?  ;D ;D ;D

Congrats to Spaff, Rick, and Red Ant for making the top 3. And Spaff wins again...how did I know that would happen?

Thanks to the 3 people whose top 5 my song made. Let's see what happens with the November SOTM.
