Subject: July SOTM--Voting Closed, Results Posted
Written By: Red Ant on 08/09/05 at 2:21 pm
Note to new participants: Welcome, and good luck. Please read all guidelines carefully. Especially, please make sure to read all the entries and vote by the end of the month. The SOTM is not so much a contest as a feedback exchange. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, either in this thread or via personal message. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
~~Vote by replying to this thread with your five favorites in order:
1st choice- 5 points
2nd place- 4 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th place- 1 point.
~~You're not allowed to vote for your own song.
~~Once you've posted a vote, you're not allowed to change it.
~~Voting continues until the last day of the month ends.
~~Anyone who's participated in a SOTM contest may vote.
~~Anyone who enters but does not vote by the end of the month is disqualified and may not participate next month.
~~Voters are strongly encouraged to leave at least a brief comment on every parody, to prove they've at least clicked on them all. Failure to do so will not result in official consequences, but will indicate to others that you're not interested in receiving comments either.
~~In the event of a tie, the parody with the most first place votes wins.
If it's still tied, the parody with the most second place votes wins.
If it's still tied, a brief playoff round will be held.
All participants will have the first week of the month to choose one favorite from among the tied entries.
Tiebreaker voting is strongly encouraged but not required. On the eighth day the one with the most votes wins.

Here’s my contribution to the growing monthly suspense:
5 Points: "Applied A Bunch Of Stickers To My S.U.V." by MooRocca
In my younger days I used to have stupid bumper stickers attached to my car. Hence both nostalgia and fun were found in this parody. And where should a parody about bumper stickers be if not in front of the queue?
4 Points: "Meaning o'Life" by Johnny D
I’m old enough to remember when MP first aired in Sweden. Hence nostalgia and fun again (my theme of the month?). I hope MP are in the reruns enough so that the younger writers here get enough of the puns of this masterpiece to appreciate it.
3 Points: "The Baby Bites" by Rick C
I have some early memories. Not that early though. And no kids of my own. Yet. Thank God. For both of those facts.
2 Points: "Fake It, Fake It" by Luke B
I’m sure a recording of this would do wonders for your love life Luke. Though, maybe not in the way you’d hope for.
1 Point: "This Song Is So Lame" by Red A
After having heard the original I had to conclude; “Ain’t that the truth!â€Â

Well, I don't think another 6 days left will help me fit my very large short list into 5 spots so here are my votes:
5 points to #20, Killing Children (Wanton murder) by Phil Alexander
4 points to #5, If You Don't Know Who To Come For, Come For Me
by Peter Andersson a.k.a. K1chyd
3 points to #3, Yellow Submarine (Misheard Version) by Dominic L
2 points to #9, Lady Godiva by Dumb A$$ Kid
1 point to #10, Evil 'Puter by Adagio
Since "Just Eat It" didn't have comments enabled, I'll leave mine here:
(SOTM) A bit rough on the pacing but pretty funny.
All parody entries this month were great (though some horrid OSs, including mine), honorable mentions to all.

firstly, thanks Red Ant, for stepping into Claude's huge shoes and doing the assured, diligent job we all knew you would
but wow, thankyou so much everyone, it's a huge honour - and with the AmIright bar being constantly raised, and with all the new talent entering and improving each month, I consider every single vote a gift, so to win SOTM is a big deal to me, and very humbling. I actually wrote this one for entering into the "K" comp (hence the odd title) but it received such a good reaction I bumped my intended SOTM entry and put this in instead - thankfully
(and thanks Kristof of course, for both rhyming with Kris Kristofferson, and for being underwhelmed by him)
and I'm also glad it won for the fact it represents the communal AmIright opera, Pirates Of Penstanzas, that was such a blast to do - and so thanks again to everyone who contributed to that.
Sorry to bump you into second place MooRocca, as I loved your SUV one, with it's satirical focused edge.
And congrats too to Johnny D, who I gave my 5 votes to, and who I was pleased to see make a late run for third place - and bad luck Phil, for being squeezed out of third, with such a powerful, clever, inspired and masterfully-constructed statement-parody
Like I said in my vote-post, I found this the hardest month yet to work out places, as the quality seemed to go deeper before petering out this month
and good luck for August everyone! :D :D

Congratulations to Stuart and MooRocca, and also to my bronze-medal compatriot, Philbo!
Thanks very much to everybody who voted for my Monty Python silliness.
As is my customary practice, I shall base the awarding of medals on vote-count, not on contest-placement --- so, even though according to the SOTM contest rules I won third place because I won the tie-breaker with Phil, I will be awarding Phil a bronze medal too, because he had the same number of votes as the official SOTM third-place-winner.

Huge congrats Stu, Johnny D & Phil! Thanks to everyone who voted (including those of you who accidentally left me off your top five -- hee hee!) Stu, no need to be sorry for knocking me down to 2nd place, I'm thrilled to have done so well in this round. :) I've been beyond merely crazy-busy in RL, so finding time and energy to vote in this round was extremely difficult for me, this month and I really have to shout out an extra special thanks to everyone whose parodies were a delight to read (and had me shaking in my boots this round) -- especially K1 whose entry still has me in stitches and instantly became one of my overall site-faves the first time I had the pleasure of readiing it. :) Great round, y'all. Thanks again for making my day with one of the top slots!

Have to say that Stu's Krismasterpiece looked like a SOTM winner from the off - well deserved. MooRocca & JD: excellent, well done and all that. Everyone else: looks like we'll just have to try harder this month.
An especial thanks to all those who voted for what was indubitably the unfunniest parody ever to hit SOTM - sorry to make you all read such an unhappy number.
See you next month :)

That was fun, but sadly I got one of the least amount of votes, but it's ok, because all these parodies were so good anyway... Uh, Congrats to the winners, and if I even have anything good from August, I will submit for the SOTM this month! :)

Congrats to your second win this year Stu! And congrats to the other medalists too. Also, since MooRocca too has won one round once I think it is safe to say that now with yet another place on the podium for Johnny D there is noone here I’d rather see take that last leap to finally get the gold and glory, the amount of silver and bronze medals in his cabinet must be unprecedented here. (Hmm... well, come to think of it, Spaff might have more bronze and silver medals though, I’m not sure, but I seem to reminisce him having like ten songs in the SOTY 2004, and since all of them can’t have been SOTM winners... But since he’s already made that golden lap so many times there’s quite a difference anyway).
Though I have to say (and I’m glad that Stu already has won once because that makes me feel less like a grumpy old man saying this) that I don’t really feel 100 percent comfortable with this months winner. Of course it’s a good parody and a worthy winner in that respect, and we all know this was a big part in the initializing of the already immortal â€ÂPirates who Penstanzas†project, but it’s the first time a parody about another AmIright writer wins the SOTM. I’m not against parodies about other parodists per se, (heck, I’ve written a couple of them myself), but I’m afraid it’s one of these things that makes the site appear cliquey (sp?), one of these things that might scare of newbies from the site/SOTM if it grows too be too much of it. Hence I hope this is not the beginning of a lasting Amiright/SOTM trend (though I guess in the long run I could endure handle and evaluate a lesser amount of contributions without crying too much). :P
Any opinions on this, or is it just me who’s getting old and grumpy? 8)

Congrats to all of our winners... :)
And to address K1's concern...I don't see a problem with a tribute (or any parody about another parodist) winning at all, and the fact that Stuart's parody won...implies that the general population of the site don't see a problem with it either.
And I don't think that Stuart won because his parody was about Kristof...(I mean, really...who can stand that guy?)...he won because his entry was just a good, clever, well written parody...to a hard song. When Spaff won with Darth Vader's Crabs, was anyone really afraid that the growing trend would be to write parodies about Star Wars...or STDs? Nah...
I think we should all encourage folks to write about whatever they want to write about. If people appreciate it...regardless of the subject matter...then it should (and will) be rewarded. If it's too exclusive, or too 'inside' (as tributes sometimes are) then it probably won't win.
I do think, however, that parodies about clumsy but undeniably beautiful elves should be rewarded more readily than others...just for the record.

I'll be honest. I generally do not vote for parodies that wouldn't be understood by the general public. I realize that almost any song could be put into a clique (Star Wars, LOTR, clumsy elves), but something about a specific amiright writer, while having lots of meaning to most if not all of the voters in this contest, loses something with most people outside of amiright...the casual observer.
That said, Stu's parody made my top 5. First, it was brilliantly written. And second (I read it again before writing this), I didn't feel that a reader needed to know Kristof to enjoy the parody. There was very little that was specific to Kristof, except that he's a parody writer...most focused on Kris (not Kristof), and the wordplay on the similar names.
