Subject: Australiana Parody Contest
Written By: Luke Brattoni on 10/28/04 at 11:47 pm
Silverchair! AC/DC! Olivia Newton-John! Whatever your style or era, submit your favourite Aussie parodies here.
*Your parody can be of a song that wasn't originally Australian (ie. Spiderbait's "Black Betty" ) just as long as you've used the Australian band/singer as the author.
*Submit your parodies by Sunday, November 7th. Voting commences once entries are in.
*Voting will be 3 points, 2 points and 1 point for your top three.
*Azza&Nazza are void from entering due to over use of horrendous Aussie slang. (joking!)

Ooooh! Fun! Count Pippin and I in! We have already written 3/4 of a parody of "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?" and will probably have it submitted by Monday at the latest. Please watch for it, as I know only Aussies will know the song to vote it... :)

I've done one but as it was my VERY first attempt, I won't be embarrassing myself by putting it up....especially against the likes of M&P! :P

Here's my entry, a parody of "Waltzing Matilda", the Unofficial National Anthem Of Australia:
"Schmaltzing Gefilte"
My parody "Schmaltzing Gefilte" is based on one of the various versions of "Waltzing Matilda" that uses two consecutive repetitions of the words "Waltzing Matilda" at the start of each chorus.
The following web page has lyrics and chords for the a version of "Waltzing Matilda" that is very similar to the version upon which I based "Schmaltzing Gefilte", as well as links to free audio recordings of that version of "Waltzing Matilda":
http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/folkden/php/search/individ.php?mid=99
One difference:
In the version of "Waltzing Matilda" found at the above-URL, the first verse and then every chorus has the line:
"And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled"
In the version of "Waltzing Matilda" upon which I based my parody, only the first verse has that line;
all subsequent choruses have instead the line:
"And he sang as he watched and waited by the billabong"
That's why in my parody "Schmaltzing Gefilte", my first verse has the line:
"And he sang as he watched the waiters in the deli toil"
....whereas all subsequent choruses in my parody have the line:
"And he sang as he sat and waiters plied the deli throng".

Don't worry mate (may I call you "mate" ?), that silly title "Unofficial National Anthem Of Australia" is indeed meant as the silliest of silly jokes.......I mean, who would REALLY want even an UN-official national anthem that's a song about a sheep-rustler who drowns himself in a water-hole to escape from a rancher?
Well.........I GUESS SOME PEOPLE REALLY DO, YEEEEEE-HAWWW !!!

Luke - I need a ruling -
Do The Bee Gees still count as Australian?
....particularly regarding the songs they wrote while still Australian citizens....(sixties, early seventies)

Andy, you should use this as an opportunity to have more experienced writers give feedback and help to improve your style. These competitions aren't all about winning and being showered with prizes.
*scowls at Spaff* ;)
As for Stuart, most certainly! Bee Gee it to me, bay-bee!
Merry & Pippin...erm, you never actually attached a link to your parody.

Re-read above, oh Ralphing One...
We just finished writing it special for this contest and have not yet submitted it to Amiright. It should go up this evening, if I ever get the final okay from Pip.... :)

Don't worry mate (may I call you "mate" ?), that silly title "Unofficial National Anthem Of Australia" is indeed meant as the silliest of silly jokes.......
As you asked me nicely, NO ;D :P Call me Fuss :)
And I took the joke that way, please don't get me wrong, I cold see the humour ;) I couldn't resist a go at my pet soapbox issue, that's all !
I mean, who would REALLY want even an UN-official national anthem that's a song about a sheep-rustler who drowns himself in a water-hole to escape from a rancher?
Rancher ? Funny term hee hee ;D You mean farmer :P
Yes! You heard it right! Over here Sheep and Cattle are farmed ::) Well, more specifically they are 'stationed', but that makes it sound like they are waiting for a train or something ::)
Well.........I GUESS SOME PEOPLE REALLY DO, YEEEEEE-HAWWW !!!

Yep, the double WM ones are the versions that I am familiar with. Once again, I don't mind singing along with the song, and it is a good (albeit silly) story. Scary as anthem fodder though :o

Thanks Meriadoc (and Pippin) for your kind words and encouragement, it's much appreciated. Things are a bit hectic at the moment and I don't think I'm in the right mindset to have a go at a rewrite, I might just make it worse.... ::)
A great suggestion however, but I'll see how the week pans out. :)

Awwww, but I wanna win! ;)
Good point Luke and if it turns out that I have no time to rewrite it (though looking at it again, I think it'd be wise :-might submit it as is. Hang the embarrassment! :P

However tempting it is to enter a Waltzing Matilda parody into this competition (love the antipodean idea, btw)... not to mention one of my favourite DC parodies (Big Bills), on the principle that these competitions are for profile-raising as much as anything, I'm going with this one because I like it and the only four votes it's had have been wiped:
Right Howler (to 'Night Prowler' by AC/DC)

Hey, my intention was for a propodean theme! ;)
