Subject: More Oldies Exposure - Randomized Song Contest
Written By: DoRitos on 09/10/04 at 12:18 pm
Just an idea that I'd like to put out. I'm wondering if maybe we could just do a random generated parody contest to help expose more of the stuff that is lying in the abyss. Say once per week we generate 20 or some agreed upon number of songs from the random picker and post them up for voting and commenting. We could allow anyone with a login to this messageboard to cast votes. Maybe generate the list on Saturday and post it and close the voting on the following Friday. I'm wondering if Chucky G could set the site up to randomly pick a given number of songs at a given time and then post them into a thread?ÂÂ
Please reply to this tread with your thoughts on this idea.ÂÂ

Whew, I'm glad this isn't a plug for over their 70's porn. I mean, I'm open minded, but seriously.
It's not a bad idea, but I think it works better with authors picking the stuff that should get more exposure. I've seen some stuff here, matter of fact I've posted stuff here, that kinda needs some more time in the abyss, if ya catch my drift.

Yeah, 2NZ I realize that we will get some real junk but no one needs to vote on lame songs if they don't like what they read. We'd have no requirement to vote or post comments since some won't allow comments anyway. It would be just a once per week random sampling of stuff on the site that would get a second exposure. This site has such a rich variety of things that could be dwelt upon. The results could prove quite interesting. It could generate interest amongst those who do not submit to the parody contests. It may get people who only use the messageboard to actively peruse the amiright side of the site. I know there is some downside to this and that is why I'd like a lot of feed back on this. I know I would never think of every angle.ÂÂ

I just pulled 20 parodies at random and came up with this list as a test to see what kind of results we might expect to get.ÂÂ

I think you got beginners luck with that first twenty. It was a pretty good batch. I'm all for it, but I've played that game and only liked one out of the twenty.

Now what do we do? How do we vote?

Pat - This was just a test to see what we would get. We still needs lots of discussion on this.

Yeah, this seems like a good idea. Obviously, some very good ones can be found by clicking random.

Not yet... at least, not at random. Unfortunately there's no categorisation on amiright, so it would be hard to infer one (look at the stuff that the Google Ads throw up, for example)
I could fairly easily write something which would take a list of entrants and randomly select a parody from each parody author's page - basically have a competition to say "pick any of my parodies, I don't care!"
Strangely enough, I've only come across a handful of goodies when clicking "Random" - the majority have been fairly dire :(
I'd quite like to get some kind of competition web posting automated so that there's less time required by all concerned, ideally something that would require registration but would allow anybody to vote (or even have a selectable option so that only those entering the contest will be allowed to vote)
In the absence of enough time to do the development for something like this, I'm off to explore what we can do with the messageboard polls...
