Subject: ONE WEEK NOTICE "My mama said" (for October 06 publishing date)
Written By: K1chyd on 09/28/17 at 12:24 pm
Greetings Parody Authors, welcome to the Friday September 29 to Friday October 06 round of the One Week Notice challenge. My name is Peter, I'll be your host.
The One Week Notice challenge works like this: The host picks an original song and posts about it in a new messageboard thread on the first friday (or Thursday evening), and those who want to participate have one week to create a parody of it by next Friday's publishing date on Amiright (barring acts of God/Chucky G). This challenge is not a contest judging for quality. No points are awarded, constructive criticism is encouraged but there is no requirement to read each parody and/or leave comments. This is done in the spirit of flexing our parody writing "muscles" and to grow back the spirit of camaraderie within the Amiright community.
The song chosen ideally should be one that has NOT been already parodied on Amiright, and should also be of reasonable difficulty and length (Matthias is hosting a separate thread for general discussion about that part, see the messageboard and feel free to join in).
http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=56105.0
The host of the parody must provide a link to the original song's lyrics (or post them in his/hers host post, like I'm doing here below) and a link to a YouTube video of the song (or an equivalent thereof). Please also include the year the song was first released to allow for the submission form on Amiright.
With that said, here's my new One Week Notice (or OWN, as we've begun to abbreviate it) for Friday September 29 to Friday October 06.
"My mama said" - 1974
Artist - ABBA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92L6balksi8
Tried to sneak out without saying
With my loudest record playing
Oh, my mama said
-Look at this, you haven't done your bed
My mama said
-That's a thing that you should do instead
Yeah, I did what she had told me
Dying for my friend to hold me
My mama said
-Try and get one thing into your head
My mama said
-Pa and me, we give you room and bed
How I wanna live my life
Wanna live my life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
In the morning she said listen
Ooh, I felt like in a prison
My mama said
-I know you've been out again with Fred
(My mama said)
My mama said
-Don't you lie, your cheeks are blushing red
(My mama said)
Oh I wanna live my life
Wanna live my life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
I said I can't live without him
How I wish you wouldn't doubt him
My mama said
-If you want to hurt me go ahead
(My mama said)
My mama said
-I suppose you'd rather see me dead
(My mama said)
Oh I wanna live my life
Wanna live my life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
La-la-la, la-la-la, life
This song is a previously un-parodied sweat little ditty/gem from ABBA's breakthrough Waterloo album. The artists are of course famous, but the song is not. I've long planned to one day get around to use it on Amiright. It has at least two things going for it that should appeal to parody song writers.
ONE: The easy title switch for starters. Just replace "mama" with doctor/vicar/landlord/postman/butcher/hubby/wifey/neighbour/bossman/teacher/etc and you've got a theme going. And there are of course other ways to work the title too, like "My husband pays" or "Our PM states" (with several possible meanings for PM) or "Can't find the tray" etc.
TWO: The eight lines that are already in the original supposed to read as spoken words. All eight lines rhymes with each other, but they come in pairs of two throughout the song, so you got at least two options there, to go for eight different words (actually, even ABBA repeats on "bed", they only managed seven for eight) or to go for four different rhymes to enhance your parody theme depending on where the rest of its parts take you.
Good luck, One Week starts NOW!

A few ideas........
1. "My Mama's Dead" (Psycho tribute)
2. "Obama Left" (Political parody)
3. "Iguana Pet" (Having a pet iguana)
4. "My Marmoset" (Having a pet marmoset)
5. "My Lava Pit" (Crazy dude lives inside of a volcano)
6. "My Llama Pet" (Having a pet llama)
7. "My Java Blend" (Coffee snob anthem)
8. "My Honda's Dead" (Bad car parody)
9. "No Common Sense" (Dude does completely irrational things)
Out of all of these I think I like "No Common Sense" the best...

I have previously belabored the rhyme of Mama with "Llama", but go with what will work for you. :)

If it hadn't been for having the lyrics to read, I'd've sworn it was "My Marmoset"
Other ideas...
My Hummer's Dead (well, they're not the most reliable of motors, are they?)
Fry Marmoset (and other ways of cooking monkeys.. though I might have covered that topic with "Fry me a Baboon" in the past)
Though I'm quite tempted to go with "My Mama's Head", if that was the only bit left of her...

Adding to the "dead" ideas here now since that angle didn't strike me at first:
"I'm walking dead" --- Zombie theme that ties into the "wanna live my life" tricky part.
"My mouse is dead" - Dude calls the IT help desk with repeated minor complaints.
"My parrot's dead" --- Tribute to a certain Monthy Python sketch.

You could also do "DAWN OF THE DEAD" as a George A Romero tribute or "SHAUN OF THE DEAD" if you are so inclined...

Just like the number of letters in ABBA there were four of us in this round - the AMPP group (as I now label it):
Agrimorfee with "My mama's spread"

Matthias with "Fried marmoset"

Peter with "My (teenage) children say"

Phil with "My mama's head"
