Subject: ONE WEEK NOTICE "Sleeping my day away" (September 15)
Written By: K1chyd on 09/07/17 at 1:10 pm
For the September 15 update (Next Friday) I will submit a parody based on:
"Sleeping my day away" by D-A-D
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh2eqnnRYlI
Lyrics: (ADDED SATURDAY: See separate post below for lyrics // PA)
Just like with the previous two rounds the concept is quite simple; I hope it can get you people here to write parodies of the SAME ORIGINAL SONG and then post them on the SAME DAY, in this case for the September 15 update to Amirights front page.
Footnote: The original song is from 1989 and was the first hit for this Danish band that is still around today. In the beginning they went by the name Disneyland After Dark - but once they reached some local Scandinavian fame lawyers from that firm got in touch and forced them to change it. For a while they went by D.A.D. - but those dots became problematic in the internet era, so they had to change AGAIN. Now they're just D-A-D, but everyone my age in Scandinavia knows what that really stands for. :-)

Now how does this work for the next round? Will another participant be able to submit a song to challenge the others? I have a couple ideas for fresh original songs in mind

Let's discuss that - and/or start a second phase.
Me: On the one hand I wouldn't mind the idea becoming so popular that multiple OWNs are started every week, for the resurrection and proliferation of Amiright etc. On the other hand it's probably better at this point to continue with one per week, preferably on Fridays, to make it fully established as an Amiright thing.
How about for starters asking those interrested so far to sign up to start one of another three rounds? Maybe just by calling dips on one of the following three Fridays? (Don't mention what particular song you have in mind yet - just sign up to "host" a round with one that looks rather easy to work with).
Starting Friday September 15 (for submissions to the Friday September 22 update.
Starting Friday September 22 (for submissions to the Friday September 29 update).
Starting Friday September 29 (for submissions to the Friday October 06 update).

As an extra service to participants, new and old, I'll post the full original song lyrics here. If you're a new parody song writer; note that those blue "XXXX" lines are a part of my writing technique, the starting point for substituting the line above. (Later on, when I have my first working chorus, I'll copy-paste that and change blue to red, as a reminder to myself I want to vary the rest of those if possible before I cut away the original lines and submit the finished parody).
Mumbling good morning & raising my head
XXXX
A bad breath kiss to my pillow pet
XXXX
I take a look at the day turns & stay in bed
XXXX
Open my eyes when the day have died
XXXX
I turned the world and I slept allright
XXXX
Now my daymare is over I zip my jeans tight
XXXX
Oh lord won't you bless this night...
XXXX
From the pale lips of a youth who lay
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
And when the night comes to the city I say
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
Yeah! With my pale lips in the pillow I say
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
After dark is the game I play
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
When my dreams begin
XXXX
I'll be proud to be letting you in
XXXX
With a smile on my face I guide our dreamboat in
XXXX
So if you want to travel along with me
XXXX
You better sleep tight the rest of the day
XXXX
You see I could be a sleeper it's not rest I lack
XXXX
'Coz I hit the sack when the suns coming back
XXXX
From the pale lips of a youth who lay
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
And when the night comes to the city I say
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
Yeah! With my pale lips in the pillow I say
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
That after dark is the game I play
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
(Guitar Solo)
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
Yeah! Now I've turned the world around yeah! I did it again
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
And now I have to wear my shades down sleepers lane
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
Yeah! All the good people have gone to bed again
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
Because the devil's at work inside my brain
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
I'm sleeping my day away
XXXX
Away

hope I can get myself to try and write some of these parodies and will get some ideas. Don't know about hosting, unless I find something really stupid looking or can bring back something fun and old I love.

Excited to see what oddball tune you'll have us do... Going back to your oddball (Nina Hagen / Baz Lurhman / Cardiacs) roots lol

That Baz Lurhman song is looong, I remember it took me way more than one week to do it. The others probably have some songs at normal lenght though. There are still lots of songs never used on Amiright - that's good now! :)

I'm going to try to parody that as a Halloween parody. Lots of room to explore with that topic

I am having a lot of trouble with this Sleeping song. There is so much repetition, with such a rigid ryhthm, I am not quite sure what to do with this without taking it into a crass territory of sarcasm or bad taste. (my mind keeps going to "gay" as the sub for "day"/etc....)

You can end the title with "today" over "away". Here are some ideas:
"writing a song today"
"shaving my legs today"
"spilling the beans today"
"spinach for me today"
"blocking the ads away" ... that one ends with away, but I'm just brainstorming here.
"siding with Trump today" ... naah, I don't see that one happening ;)
Etc
Additional: "siding with Trump, NO WAY!" would take it a little off pace, but not notably much so.

I keep seeing with my mind's ear (if that makes any sense) "Calling in sick today...", which would not be good todo because Weird Al has an original song with that same vibe.

More:
"hedging my bets today" might open up to a list type parody.
"(I'm) Santa, I'm on the way" for an early Christmas parody.

My original plan was DRINKING MY BRAIN AWAY
"(I) search for a brain today" - an Igor/Frankenstein song for Halloween.
"(They're) after my brain today" - a zombie themed variation.
"down on my knees to pray" - many ways to play that one, or just a variation for a zombie parody
"down on her knees today" - many ways to play that one too, including NSFW
"giving the end away" - spoling the movie (or a book) for a matey.
"(My) dragon's in pain today" - Game of Thrones, or again NSFW/double-entendrous.
This is fun! :) :) :)
Maybe we should have a collective brainstorming for title subs (earlier) on every One Week Notice?

So what are the rules for song choosing when we host our week's OWN round?
Are we in agreeance that rap should be cut?
Also: Are we only using artists that haven't been done before on Amiright OR is any song allowed to be used?

For all future OWN postings, it would be very nice if the next week's Host also includes the year of OS release along with the lyrics to the song they are proposing.

I would allow any song, but still make it clear in the "rules" the song choice *should* be an underrepresented song in the AIR parody wheelhouse. And I suppose, in relation to your previous question, now that I think about it, a song of reasonable length and difficulty.

Rap songs are HARD especially when you want to complete them in one week and it would scare off newbies...

Not much I can add to what the two of you just wrote. One week isn't much time to work with so an original song of reasonable length and difficulty makes sense. Also we have to assume some, if not most, aspiring participants are adults with jobs Monday to Friday and pretty much only has the weekend to write, with maybe a little evening-time fine-tuning on top of that. Avoiding rap makes sense for the same reason, no need to make a rule against it because any host that tries to go with rap for his/her round will by the nature of that genre find with almost certainty that noone else managed to finish in time.
As for "underrepresented songs in the AIR parody wheelhouse" (perfect phrasing there Agri!) - that's what I'm thinking too and that's what I'll do for any future rounds I host. Then again if some newbie wanna host a round and for some reason throws down notice on "Yesterday" by The Beatles or some other totally overdone original... well, I guess us veterans can still handle listening to such once more and handle an OWN like that every now and then if OWNs manage to become a permanent feature on Amiright.
Maybe I should start a separate "One Week Notice, Phase 2, Discuss and/or Sign Up" thread?

Don't think I've mentioned this, but the front page Event list seems to be updated after Chucky's review, just like the daily parodies, so that part of an OWN has to be done before the Friday update goes into effect. Starting a thread here in the forum of course goes live the second you hit "post".

Well, I'd rather start working on my parody for your round right away over the weekend now, so that makes all sorts of sense. You do it! :)
My one suggestion not mentioned so far is to stretch the three week sign up list at the start of this thread to five weeks or something like that since we already have hosts for next two weeks (and I'll be the back-up for a third if need be anyway). Something like this:
*Starting Friday September 15 (for submissions to the Friday September 22 update).
-----Agrimorfee has signed up to host this round.
*Starting Friday September 22 (for submissions to the Friday September 29 update).
-----Matthias has signed up to host this round.
*Starting Friday September 29 (for submissions to the Friday October 06 update).
OPEN SLOT
*Starting Friday October 6 (for submissions to the Friday October 13 update).
OPEN SLOT
*Starting Friday October 13 (for submissions to the Friday October 20 update)
OPEN SLOT

See, I was going to do it this morning (US Central Time). Noted well. I can't promise that I can make an all-inclusive rules and sign up thread today, but I will start the next song in a separate thread.
Gents, I will read and comment on your parodies over the weekend when I have a chance to actually hear the song!
