Artistry 2
I'm happy to announce to everybody that Below Average Dave's creation Artistry will be making a strong comeback with brand new artists covering genres ranging from Rap to Experimental and back again. It should be a blast of another 5 year contest and hopefully we can make this a never ending competition because it has touched all the lives of parody artists on Amiright in many different ways. It's come a long way ever since the first round with us parodying Disney songs and it maintains to be an important factor in many parodists lives that it deserves to live on in all it's greatness!

I was thinking the same thing....but just who's actually willing and able to chair it?
Let me be the first to commend Below Average Dave for having the smarts, creativity and BALLS to formulate it and carry the mantle for it through thick and thin. I certainly cannot be the one to follow in his footsteps.

I think we all deserve to give everyone participated in this contest a hearty round of applause especially Conqueror of Parodies, Below Average Dave and Agrimorfee who participated in every single round of this contest (Matthias missed two rounds so he sucks) also Porfle Popnecker and Blaydeman as well as Matthias (I suppose) who continue to contribute to this never-ending contest.
I for one would like to see a lot more Alternative Rock, Modern Pop and Dance and even some more Country and Rap make it into this because those two genres didn't get a lot of attention. This was mostly all rock with a few other genres sprinkled in (classic rock mostly) so as these last approach I open the gates to any artist you think deserves a round of mockery placed upon them (I'm sure there are a few classic rock artists we haven't mocked yet). The thing is should we allow the artist from earlier to be reshuffled and parodied again or should it just be 150 new artists? I'm thinking the latter because I'm sure there are a ton of artists who need a good swift kick in the funny bone.
A few artists that weren't even around when we started this thing were Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift (just to name a few)

So let's open up the floodgates... What other artists would you like to see parodied?
As for me... (Don't care about Ke$ha...)
1. Justin Bieber
2. Miley Cyrus
3. Taylor Swift
4. Lady Gaga
5. Katy Perry
6. Rihanna
7. The White Stripes
8. Ben Folds Five
9. Cake
10. Barenaked Ladies
11. Oasis
12. Sublime
(Let's get this continuing ball rolling)

My thoughts on this nonsense:
- Is there a limit to how many artists can be submitted? Because I could come up with a metric buttload of artists right off the top of my head for sure. Hey, maybe this could be a venue for the remaining artists from B-Man's Hip-Hop Specialist Contest?
- I think there should be a gap between the end of Artistry 1 and Artistry 2: Electric Boogaloo just so it doesn't feel like it's all one big lump of madness.
- And as for who could run it...I'm hesitant to throw my name into the proverbial hat, given that the timezone difference would be a tricky to work around. Although given the fact that I have a psuedo-spreadsheet (it's in Word, but it still does what I need it to do) to keep track of which artist has been done so far, and my nothing-better-to-do-ness, I think I could do a good job. What do you lot think?

I think they should be all big name artists like the original Artistry was. I don't want to see bands like Yellowcard or Cee-Lo Green getting a round when they only have a few big hits.
How much time do you think we should wait between contests?

A month or two would be my suggestion. And I do get that the artists have to be big names (hence why as much as I want to, I won't submit The Wanted or JLS), but my actual question was how many I should submit. You put up twelve, should I do the same? Less? More?

I think we should have about 100 like we had this time around. I just don't want to see this contest end!

Also who is Jesse J and Powerfinger? Never heard of them. Also I think that Snoop Dogg has a round in this current Artistry. I'm pretty sure Nelly had a round (that might have been in the Hip-Hop Competition though)
Also does Flo Rida have any more hits than "Right Round"?
The rest I agree with though!

The rest I agree with though!
- Jessie J is a current artist, with hits like "Price Tag" and "Domino".
- Powderfinger is an Australian rock band. If The Skyhooks got a pass last time around, these guys definitely should get in.
- Unless you know what the last two secret artists are, Snoop and Nelly haven't had rounds (Nelly did have a Hip-Hop Comp round, and Snoop was going to be a round in said comp).
- Flo Rida's got hits like "Low" (which was the biggest hit of 2008 according to Billboard), "Club Can't Handle Me", "Good Feeling", "Wild Ones" and currently "Whistle" is in the top 10.
7. Kansas
9. Janis Joplin
14. Brooks N Dunn
15. Alan Jackson
16. Montgomery Gentry
18. Trace Adkins
20. Rascal Flatts
21. Sara Evans
22. Uncle Kracker
27. Heart
I have no idea who these guys are, but that didn't stop me last time (see: Skyhooks, Thin Lizzy, Suzi Quatro).

Most of those are country artists. I think it should have a bigger say because it didn't get a lot of attention during the original Artistry (such as rap and hip hop)
- Kansas is a rock band ("Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Dust In The Wind")
- Janis Joplin is a 60s rock artist ("Me And Bobby McGee")
- Brooks N Dunn, Alan Jackson, Montgomery Gentry, Trace Adkins, Rascal Flatts, Sara Evans and Uncle Kracker are all country artists.
- Heart is a rock band ("Alone" and "Barracuda"

Ah, country. That'd explain why I haven't heard of these guys (I have heard "Carry On My Wayward Son", though only on a Girl Talk mashup album where it was played over Chris Brown's "Run It!". Mashups can get weird sometimes).

One of raisons detre for Artistry is "going out of the comfort zone"; so I would like to suggest the following for your benefit and mine (forgive if some of these are already on the current list):
Air Supply
Grateful Dead
Pet Shop Boys
Pop Christmas (any non-traditional seasonal carol, any genre)
Movie Musical (any genre or era, as long as it was written or produced for that movie)
Primus
Mr. Bungle/Fantomas/Tomahawk (crazy metal outfits headed by Mike Patton)
Gogol Bordello (gypsy punk rockers, lots of fun tunes to choose from)
The Mars Volta (American prog metal band that I DONT like, an appropriate challenge for me)
Depeche Mode
Barry Manilow
Alanis Morrisette
Phil Spector Girl Groups (The Ronettes, The Crystals, Darlene Love)
Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention
Paul McArtney/Wings
Sex Pistols
Elliot Smith (highly regarded but depressing folk rocker who I know 0 songs of)

Movie Musicals is a good one. I think we should do TV Theme Songs/ Musicals as well (so anything from Glee, Scrubs: My Musical or Community's "Regional Holiday Music") can be parodied as well.
But I think Alanis already has a round.
Also hell yeah on the Mike Patton round!
That being said I add...
1. TV Theme Songs (Or songs written for TV Shows)
2. Volatire (Goth Rocker)
3. Tom Waits
4. Theory of a Dead Man
To this already pretty epic list.

I don't know who Tinie Tempah, JLS or Example are but with that we now have more artists than the original artistry. Talk about another 5 year contest! Yay! Hahaha
I'll add another 4 to make it an even number and I think that should cover it. 10 more than the original artistry just to show off! ;)
I'll post the entire list afterwards and if anybody has a problem with any of the artists on there speak now or be stuck with a Suzi Quatro, Skyhooks or -shudder- Gordan Lightfoot round...
The final 4 are......
1. Stray Cats
2. Marvin Gaye
3. Steve Miller Band
4. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

My only concern is assurance that the more obscure artists have ample lyric pages and videos on the Internet. That could be a problem with the Mike Patton round (at least anything not Mr. Bungle).

I'll post the entire list afterwards and if anybody has a problem with any of the artists on there speak now or be stuck with a Suzi Quatro, Skyhooks or -shudder- Gordan Lightfoot round...
If I understood the implications set forth by those examples, I may be able to figure out if I have a problem.

Also I'm surprised at T-Cop cause with all the modern artists he submitted he didn't do one of my favorites... I heard "Drive By" on the radio on the way to go swimming and realized that Train has a huge list of good songs to parody. "Good" maybe differ on your opinion of Train but I like them so good by New Kids On The Block (lame band anyways) hello Train!

Well, there's a good reason I didn't submit Train: I only know two or three songs by them. That and I don't know a lot of modern rock stuff, hence why most of my submissions were pop and rap.
And do NKOTB have any hits besides The Right Stuff?

Sure they do when I bring them up on Google for example: As Long As You Love Me, Step By Step, Sexify My Love, Happy Birthday and Please Don't Go Girl come up. Don't know any of those songs from Adam but they would have been an interesting band for sure. I like rock a lot, lot, LOT more than rap. That's why I didn't submit ANY rap artists.

First, I am super-jealous you got to meet Gotye! That is awesome beyond belief. And given that he was willing to do a skit on SNL where Andy Samberg and some other git are naked in front of him, I do not doubt his super niceness. And I wanna see that picture!
Second, A-ha have had a whole bunch of songs, not suprising considering they're one of the biggest-selling Scandinavian acts ever, about as big as Ace of Base. Check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-ha_discography#Singles. And besides, if we allowed Kool & The Gang last time, there's no way A-ha should be left out.

I definitely second Motown, or any singular artist from that era. If not that then I'd suggest Black Eyed Peas, Cobra Starship, Panic! At The Disco, Colbie Caillat, Boyz II Men, Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa, Trey Songz , The Game, Papa Roach, or Imagine Dragons (they're one of my new favorites). Just some suggestions, but I'm fine with anyone.

The Peas had a round last Artistry, and PATD have a round in this one. Trey Songz might be an interesting round, as he does have a lot of songs, but personally I'd suggest Ludacris, because Ludacris is awesome. So awesome that I can't believe I didn't already put him in my submissions.

T.I. - Jamie Foxx
Jay-Z - Ludacris
Nelly - Trey Songz
Notorious B.I.G - Papa Roach
Flo Rida - Colbie Caillat
I axed the first four as we already had Hip-Hop Specialist rounds for them. As for Flo Rida...eh, screw him. I've never heard a whole song by this Colbie Caillat person, but she's gotta have more of a personality than SlabChest McPartyman.

Sure, I don't mind OK Go. They've got a pretty big collection other than their one BIG Hit "Here It Goes Again" that really gets kind of overlooked. I'll switch of Presidents of the USA for them.
Also OK Go has only been done like 3 or 4 times on Amiright. A lot of these artists have only been hit on a few times which makes this entire project even cooler in my opinion.

This up to Conqueror of Parodies because he put him in but I kinda want to have an Owl City round and I really, really don't like Drake. If I'm alone here on hating Drake then I'll be fine in parodying his... music... But "Fireflies" and the song from Wreck It Ralph "When Can I See You Again" are SO MUCH BETTER than his crappy "Best I Ever Had" and uhm........ Yeah, I can't even think of another Drake song. At least he's better than Jason Derulo (so happy we got rid of that round)
So what do you think T-Cop. Do you want to keep Drake or would you rather parody Owl City?

Keep Drake, lose Jamie Foxx, add Owl City. I may only know, like, three songs buy Mr. City, but that's still three times as many Jamie Foxx songs I know.

Well Drake did just win a grammy for best rap album. Owl City has none. "Take Care" has a lot of good stuff on it. I mean I'm totally up for an Owl City round, but I feel like this is turning into more of what Artistry 1 was. I thought Artistry 2: ARTISTRY HARDER was supposed to have more of other kinds of genres that were under-represented in Artistry 1 such as rap and R&B. We had a lot of classic rock and pop artists in Artistry 1, and very few in any other genre. I'm just saying, If this is going to be a 5 year long thing, I would like to have there be more variety in the style of artists. I would hate to have it be rock/pop artist after rock/pop artist like Artistry 1 is now. I'm in either way, but we're booting all of the rap and r&b artists in favor of rock and pop artists. I get that it's not most of your styles, but the point of doing a second Artistry comp. was to diversify the site and ourselves. Amiright is so rock and pop heavy. Just some food for thought going forward.

I understand where you are coming from Blaydeman and I know you have always been a fan of rap and R&B but there are a lot of genres that technically don't have a lot of publicity in this contest other than rap and soul such as country, techno, jazz, blues, gospel, spoken word, classical and and really a million more genres represented less than all the rest. But the Artistry competition is meant to inspire people to write more and get involved in the sport of competing in parody writing. A few rounds should be challanging thus rap but we still need to have enough popular artists that can get people involved. So I am revoking Owl City and because of what Blaydeman said about genres of music that aren't getting enough respect in Artistry I'm going to suggest DAFT PUNK because techno hasn't been anywhere represented in here.

And I'm comfortable with getting rid of Counting Crows for Daft Punk.

I think I've said it before, but the main reason I put Drake and all them other rap artists in the list (besides the obvious "me likee rap") was so that B-Man's Hip-Hop Specialist contest could be completed in some sense. I went from Drake onwards (replacing previous Artistry alumni like the Beastie Boys with Lil Wayne and Minaj and all that) because that was there the whole thing collapsed. True, Run DMC only had two entrants, but since only one was written for Drake (I had free time, my nerves were too buggered to allow my legs to work back then) I figured that'd make some sort of sense.
But who friggin' cares DAFT MOTHEREFFIN' PUNK. Just in time for their new album!
Ooh, as no objections were raised to dropping Jamie Foxx, can we replace him with Labrinth?

Actually T-Cop, I was thinking... Earlier you said you wanted to add Cee-Lo Green. He's still not in here. Do you want to add him instead of Labrinth? Or get rid of somebody else and add both? Or not add Cee-Lo at all?
Also going to get trade out P.O.D for Carrie Underwood to expand the country aspect a bit more.
Does that sound alright?

I am very much up for expanding all the genres that haven't been touched on as much like techno, and I'd really like to see some more reggae and latin artists. And I appreciate all the rearranging you guys are doing, I'm sorry if my little blurb offended anyone. I just really want to expand my own catalog and the site's archive by diversifying the type of artists covered (not just rappers). So Daft Punk, hell yeah! And I would love to get Cee-Lo in there as long as Gnarles Barkley and Goodie Mob are included in his round.

I also see Artistry as a chance to broaden musical tastes and parody skills with artists that one is not familiar with. We had relatively obscure artists such as Skyhooks, Suzi Quatro, and Paper Lace. I never heard of Labrinth, fwiw. Keep em coming.

For reggae, I know we did Bob Marley in Artistry 1, so I think it's fitting we do either Ziggy or Damian for Artistry 2. If not them then maybe Sean Paul? He's reggae/rap. There's also Johnny Nash who's a pop/reggae crossover. There are a lot of fantastic reggae artists that are relatively unknown. We should definitely get at least one or two more in this thing.

And while I like Hall and Oats and it's hard for me to cut them, Blaydeman's right we did have enough generic pop in the first Artistry. Maybe they can find a home in Artistry 3.

I hate to sound like a hater, but there is way too much rap in the list.
Chicago is primarily light rock. Same with Toto. Zappa is more Progressive than just Rock.

But, back on relevancy, I would highly recommend that a big, fancy shoutout to all at AIR and inthe00s gets made so that more noobs hear about it and participate in Artistry 2 when it starts.
Also I think, mention should be made in that opening splash about BAD coming up with the idea at the start. I know he left us with some really bad vibes (I hope he is well), but he made this such an integral part of our parody writing lives, he deserves some sort of honorific.

Oh come on Aggy. Theres almost as many Rock sub-genres as there are rap rounds (15-9). Not to mention how many people that could be considered in the genre of pop. Like I said before, I'm not against losing the rappers, so long as another under-represented genre is put in it's place. There's so many great groups out there that aren't under the Rock genre umbrella. What about some more Jazz artists?

Big Band/Swing could probably be lumped in with jazz but some song-based jazz artists top of mind include Ella Fitzgerald, Manhattan Transfer, Mel Torme, Al Jarreau, Harry Connick Jr.
Classical is not represented here at all, but it would be extremely difficult you will agree to reformulate an aria such as Largo al Factotum...belive me, I know ( http://www.amiright.com/parody)/misc/giancarlorossini0.shtml) :) Did we have Gilbert & Sullivan in artistry 1 ?

That wasn't a typo. Matthias is suggesting a round for Skillet, the Christian rock band. How could there be a Skrillex round anyway? Last I checked his songs had no lyrics, just the occaisional one line repeated and an overabundance of WUBWUBWUB.
And Google says that Michael Buble is the correct spelling, so...?

Ugh! What happened to my huge message that I wrote explaining everything!? That's weird because that never happens...
Basically what I was saying is that we divide the list of artists into 35 for each of us (it would make Artistry 2, 175 songs instead of 160 but I think 35 is a better number to choose from and would allow us to get some more diversity in the music of Artistry 2). I said something earlier it about being all secretive and stuff but I don't think that matters and this way if we do have duplicates in mind we can just change them if somebody else has those artists in mind as well. I know I came up with a lot more artists than Agrimorfee or Blaydeman or Abbott Skelding or even Conqueror of Parodies although his contribution to his is also a large one but I think we each should have equal say in that makes the final cut since all 5 of us are going to devote our time to this.
I think we should post our 35 artists whenever we feel like it and that it all doesn't have to be sent to me to figure out. So if you want to submit your 35 artists now you can or in a few days or even a few weeks. Hopefully we can have everything done by next week so we don't have any more arguments and we can work on re-creating the playlist and everything and actually get this show on the road.
The 5 people who get to pick the artists they want (but PLEASE pick artists of different decades and genres so it's not everything from the 80s or the 00s or what-have-you)... Are...
1. Agrimorfee
2. Conqueror of Parodies
3. Matthias
4. Blaydeman
5. Abbott Skelding
Again if there are duplicates change them and try to pick at least a couple artists from different genres even if you don't care too much for the genre that you're choosing from.
Okay? That sound good to everybody?

I had no idea that was the plan. To me, it made total sense to just make one master list and prune it a bit to make compromises for everyone. In the long run, it doesnt matter to me all that much what artists we end up with, besides the odd ones that I have suggested. Furthermore, I dont believe anyone can make a totally unique list of 35 artists/themes that wont duplicate at least part of someone else's list, which will make more internal squabbles. Am I totally missing something here?

For the most part, I'm pretty okay with the overall list. Obviously, there are a few that I have no idea who it is (Split Enz for example), but there are others I've heard of but never listened to because I have a pretty limited listening range. Also, isn't Aqua the "Barbie Girl" band? Shouldn't that be in the One Hit Wonder round? I think they should be replaced by either Creed, Everclear, or Yellowcard (unless they were in the first round).

Aqua has more than one song that really got any popularity. Sure "Barbie Girl" is what they were known for but I know at least 4 or 5 more songs that were pretty popular. Like A-Ha they were a bigger success in their native land then they were here in America. They're from Denmark.
I mean you can even bring up a page on Youtube and "Barbie Girl" is just one song of like 20 on the first page alone: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=aqua
You can parody "Barbie Girl" if you want but there's a million other great pop songs where that came from.

Yeah! I'm good with all of those artists! And I'm really sorry for stirring this up guys. When the final list was posted I was really excited because there were a lot of my kind of artists on it. Then we gradually started eliminating more and more of them. I just made me a little upset because I got all hyped up to do certain artists that have ended up getting cut. But I'm all about diversifying. So let's just keep the list as a whole and continuing making adjustments. I think that will work best. I can name The Residents for Experimental if someone wants more variety (and I would be more than happy to present videos for them because I know no one else here has heard of them, but they are as worthy--and weird--as Zappa and Waits)
And if someone wants more comedy, no one is more lyric heavy and funny as Tom Lerhrer. Just a suggestion...not a WANT.

Annie Lennox sounds pretty cool and Eurythmics have a lot more than "Sweet Dreams" that I was totally unaware of. Sounds pretty cool.
Also going to trade out Motley Crue for Blink 182 because I actually like Bryan Adams and we should have more Canadian artists to have music from all over the world. Puts him on that list with Barenaked Ladies and Rush.

Extremely popular and who knows why but the 90s were ALL ABOUT Spice Girls and Hanson and to have one on here and not the other. Well, That just takes the spice out of my life...

Okay. Idea!
How about instead of saying that whoever has the most points at the end of this tournament is the winner BUT instead say the person who won the most rounds is the winner BECAUSE that I wouldn't mind so much but having to do the math for 140 rounds with multiple players would be a GIGANTIC PAIN IN THE ASS!!!
If you want for Artistry 2 I can total the number of points so that at the end we can know who has the most points but if you want a victor for this round that's the way I'm gonna do it...

I figured that seeing as I'll be tabulating the votes for each round to see who wins I might as well have a separate Notepad file for adding them up as each round comes and goes. No need to hassle someone else when I might as well do it while I'm adding things up already. Make sense? I hope it does, I suck at wording things.

As it should be! I know I always got a kick out of the weird order the rounds came in, like Dolly Parton-->Eminem-->Barry White.
However: should the first round be up to chance? The first round submitted for the first Artistry was the Disney/Animation round and that went first. Should we do the same here (which in the current list order would mean that Theory of a Deadman would go first...whoever they are)? Or should it be randomised? And should Artistry 2 be called "Artistry 2: Electric Boogaloo" or "Artistry 2: Artistry Harder"? Inquiring minds like mine wanna know!

Well.... Actually.... The first artist nominated would be Justin Bieber but no I think it should be randomized. It's more fun when you don't know who's coming... I remember getting on Dave's case not knowing who the next artist was when he was late to post it because it was exciting not to know. Like Christmas Morning!

Righty-ho, randomisation it is. The reason why I thought TOAD would be first is because in this list they're first, although Gogol Bordello is first in your YouTube playlist that I'm gonna be using to determine which artist is next.
Also, I just realised why Artistry Harder would fit. That way, it's a group effort: You decided that Artistry 2 should happen, I'm running it, B-Man named it, a whole lot of us submitted artists...

Harder is pretty cool. It will literally be "harder" for me at least, there are a lot of artists on the list not already parodied by me.
Incidentally, I made a playlist of videos by The Residents that will be helpful to all. PM me when that round comes, TCOP, so I can post the link.
Abbott, you can see what artists we have already. There is nothing stopping you from parodying the artists NOW. Strategically it allows one to take their time and avoid the rush sweat, but it does lose the element of surprise.

Eeeexcellent, Smithers.
Well, Abbott could copy the list of artists and brainstorm ideas for them now so he's ready when they pop up in the actual competition. That's what I did for my United State of Pop self challenge so that I didn't waste any time on the ideas phase.

Grim, that's actually what I did for a good chunk of time yesterday...familiarizing myself with some of the artists that I've either never heard of, or only know one or two songs by. Of the 160 rounds, I have a parody for 43 of them...not too bad, but some of the representatives are not too good, so I'll have to come up with new ones.

Hey Conqueror, I know it's the smallest little insignificant element of this project but can you have a picture of each artist on the front page of each entry round. I liked when Dave started doing that for the first few rounds of Artistry but then he dropped it for some reason. I liked it though, it gave it a very nice aesthetic quality.
Such as....
"Theory of a Deadman"

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRYXMG3M7V4WncDwDNd4iL3147o_zn7MUvDtcNSJSHc71_7Vxpg

I say there should be a gap between Artistries, maybe the length of a normal round (2 weeks). That way it'll feel like they're actually two separate contests and not just one big lump. So:
- Tonight, Beach Boys ends voting and Jamiroquai starts voting
- Two weeks from now, Jamiroquai ends voting, Weird Abbott gives me the data for the entire competition, I post the final results and we all bask in the glory and finishing.
- Two weeks from then, Artistry 2: Artistry Harder begins with whatever artist is randomly selected from your YouTube playlist.
That sound good?

So as far as extensions go I think we should continue to post the results and the new artist on the day that it's due (so we don't keep pushing it back again and again) so we have one set day known as Artistry Day. The reason I say this is that most people don't vote until the last couple days of the deadline anyways so it should be completely fine even if the person who is late needs a couple extra days to write a parody.
