Subject: AmIRight Parodist Convention, Tampa-FL June 21st and 22nd
Written By: skittlesking on 04/12/08 at 11:50 pm
Those are the official dates so people can get plane tickets in order, please let me know either here or by PM when you have tickets bought so we can start planning arrival pick up and such.
I will be scouting for hotel pricing and such tomorrow and the next few days--will edit this post for changes there
As for flight, Southwest flights at that time from most places are cheapest (if you are willing to do layovers)
Please remember to look for arrivals on Friday, Saturday would be hard because we'd be having the convention. Anyone who wants to come down earlier that week is welcome, I will be partying all that week with Red Ant and anyone else who's around.
I will be posting a lot over the next few days on this.
http://www.southwest.com
Here are some random rate checks as of 4/18/2008
Many rates have gone up below as you'll notice, the closer it gets the higher it will likely get.
I will try to do weekly updates on some of these (Round Trip Lowest Southwest Rate)
(If anyone wants another city on this list let me know)
**Flying Friday the 20th/Monday the 23rd
Baltimore MD: $230
Chicago IL: $258
Cleveland OH: $258
Detroit MI: $230
Long Island NY: $253
Philadelphia PA: $220
San Diego CA: $324
St Louis MO: $283
**Flying Thursday the 19th/Tuesday the 24th (Big Savings for some reason/Some are same if leaving Monday instead)
Baltimore MD: $230
Chicago IL: $258
Cleveland OH: $230
Detroit MI: $230
Long Island NY: $241
Philadelphia PA: $210
San Diego CA: $304
St Louis MO: $255

How cheap is cheapest? I may be free at that time but Southwest only departs from Islip which is a considerable hassle from where I live.

Most of their round trips are between $200 and $250 after tax and everything
There is a significant price difference flying on Thursday and Tuesday from the weekend
Also Friday and Monday are cheaper than Saturday or Sunday. . .

I got my tickets from a travel agent for $208.50. That's round trip, non-stop, all fees and taxes included flights from Norfolk (ORF) to Tampa and back, Monday to Monday (16th to the 23rd).
Dave and I will have rooms reserved at a good hotel by the end of the week. I dunno what a Hyatt Place or Hilton costs down there, but if I can swing it we'll be staying there or something close to it in terms of comfort. The better hotels in Tampa are close to either the airport or Busch Gardens -- I'm going with the former so getting to and from the airport will be as hassle free as possible.
I will be getting two double occupancy rooms for three days (Fri, Sat, Sun), so lodging expenses for the weekend are covered for up to 4 people. We can squeeze in more of course.
Southwest is a pretty decent airline (hey, they didn't strand 300,000 people this week or go bankrupt!) and you'd be flying in a real plane (737-300/400 series), not some turbulence prone puddlejumper. One note to those who might book their tickets online: while searching the 'net, all flights I found had connecting flights. Some of the cheapest rates involve not one but two plane changes, especially on the return trip, with substantial layover times. In my opinion, getting a non-stop flight is highly preferable to even one plane change, because:
A) Your travel time is shorter
B) There is no chance of missing your connecting flight
C) Sitting in an airport waiting for a plane is less exciting than watching paint dry
D) There is a lesser chance of the airline losing your bags (if you check them)
E) One take off and landing a day is more than enough for my ears, thank you...
I'd recommend a travel agent book your flight. Their fees on a 200-300$ flight are going to be in the 30$ range, and you'll generally do as well or better with them than booking online.
We should have details of the hotel accomodations by the end of the week.

The rooms are booked at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore for the 20th-22nd.
Check it out:

Sweet, eh?
The hotel is very close to the airport, and as we said before Dave is renting a car the whole week so transportation and lodging are taken care of.
Let me know if you are interested in coming. So far Dave, Matt, Jeff Reuben and I are coming. If we need to get another room I need to know asap so we can get rooms close together.

For those of you who are planning on renting your own car anyway, you might consider flying into Orlando and driving to Tampa. Everyone airline flies into Orlando, and rates may be a little cheaper for those in western US, and even those in Europe. The drive from Orlando to Tampa is about 90 minutes down Interstate 4.
Come on Phil (and other Brits), the dollar is in the tank compared to the pound. Out of curiousity, I checked, and British Airways is $820 London to Orlando non-stop. You can combine it with a few days at Orlando's lovely theme parks :P June's a lovely time in Central Florida. It's above 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) for only half the day, and the torrential thunderstorms only last 20 minutes.
Anyway, it's only money. :) As Drew Carey says, "Why make money if you can't have fun spending it?"

Good idea to look at Orlando airport instead of Tampa: rates might be cheaper there as well as the possibility of more non-stop flights going there vs Tampa.
Hey McKludge, you interested in coming? Like you said, it's only money. And 20 minute torrential rainstorms. ;D

The rainstorms can sometimes be a blessing:)
I checked rates, it all depends on where you are coming from, if anyone does go to Orlando and wants to go to theme parks in the area prior to the Tampa Convention, I haven't been to any of them--in particular I've been wanting to see Universal Studios--I will ride anything and Red Ant probably wouldn't object to the idea of a night at the Orlando parks (he'll be down here that whole week).

Since I'm only 90 minutes away in Orlando, I may come down one of the two days. Maybe take in a baseball game while I'm there, although I don't like the Trop. It's a sacrilege to play baseball indoors.

Count me in. I have spoken to she who must be obeyed, and we'd love to come!!! I love Tampa anyway.
please email me with details of what I have to do to be part of it.. BTW there are sooo many actual musicians. what is we had a bar set up as a jam night?? I mean how many guys and girls would play covers etc and we could spend the night jamming and drinking. I sing lead vocals for ac/dc tribute Hells Bells out of Canada. I would have a great time as would almost any other playing guy or gal who plays ..
what of a karaoke night where we sing our own words from our parodies to karaoke stuff? I mean insert the words right???
isn't that what we do?

Awesome! It would be great if you could make it one of the two days (or both of them). The address of the Tampa Hilton is on the link I left a few posts above if you don't already know where it is.

As far as rooms go, I believe we will be getting adjoining or adjacent rooms (I've requested adjoining, both on the 'net confirmation as well as by phone). No idea of the room numbers yet - I probably won't know those until the Thursday before the weekend.

Sell crack!
(j/k!)
There's a couple of ways:
1) Save it up: You're looking at ~$250 for the plane ticket. You've only got about 5 weeks before you'd need to get your tickets, so you'd need to save 50$ a week. Not easy by any stretch, but perhaps doable.
2) Borrow the money. or maybe pawn something, like a neighbor's pet. ;)
3) Get a part time job for a week or two. Or ask for some more hours at the one you have.
If you let me know the airport you'd be leaving from and the dates, I can check with my travel agent next week and see what she can do. Her rates are always better than what are on the internet.

Not only does the part time job I have cap at 20 hours, but we just started spring break which means I'm basically not working for the rest of the month unless I find something else to do, and summer work there is unlikely as well. Right now my paychecks don't even cover rent so saving money is pretty much impossible and it's not like I ever make extravagant purchases. The most reckless thing I do with my money is occasional poker games that include people from wealthy families (don't know how wealthy) but asking for a $250 loan from any of them without knowing when I could pay it back could be a bit awkward. I'm working on some writing projects that might bring in money eventually but certainly not by June. I would probably have to chip in for hotel too, wouldn't I?
If I do manage to come down the most likely route would be LaGuardia to Orlando.

Well, you seem to be in a *bit* of luck, Ethan:
http://www.hotwire.com/air/results.jsp?searchTokenId=2&backButtonInputId=air-index
(not sure if that link will work for others...)
Tickets from LGA to TPA start at 199.50, and for non-stop both ways 219.50, all taxes included.
We have two double rooms, and the sofas probably have pull out beds, so 3 to a room is doable. Dave also has his apartment, and if need be we can get another room for the weekend. So no, you don't have to chip in for the room if you can't do so.
Sorry the job situation is kinda down in your area now. Not sure how to fix that... I'd offer to help with your flight, but I'm already in for 577$ for the two rooms, the 210$ for my flight, plus another potential 290$ for another room for the weekend.
Not sure what kind of area Astoria is, but if you have transportation, you could make that money in a few days' time recycling. Metals are insane right now... a car battery alone is worth about 15-20$ just for the lead content.
Spring/summertime means yardwork, and people generally don't like doing it. Depending on the client, you could make decent money doing that for a few weeks. A fair number of people will let you use their equipment and gas, so it's all profit.
If I can think of any other short term decent money making ideas I'll post them.

Try temp work through Manpower or some other agency. I did that during my off time in my college years. Its usually mindless work, but you do meet some interesting people doing that kind of work.

06:55 Brisbane 08:25 Sydney
09:45 Sydney 06:05 Los Angeles
08:35 Los Angeles 16:35 Orlando (Orlando International)
QF505 QF149 QF3215 23h 40m
$2065
Hmmm, let's see, that's before the taxes (I have a personal hatred of any pricing procedure that does not tell you the all-up cost) and also before travel insurance - a bit of a must if traveling to the antipodes - etc etc. So add maybe another thousand.
$ 3000 for three days, not then counting accommodation and spending money. Rats, looks like I won't be going. :\'(
Have a good time everybody. Get pics :)

Is a little better (2,596 including all taxes), but yeah that's expensive, I can certainly understand why that's not a realistic possibility. Though most will probably give Jack a little on the hotel, if someone was coming in from out of the country, he wouldn't want them to pay for part of the room (most people flying in will be doing so for quite a bit less than that) Though if you have a free moment, I'd check out a travel agent, they might be able to find something considerably cheaper, but still I can't imagine it being cheap enough to go. You know what, I better start saving in case I ever want to go to an out of country convention . . . something tells me it's no cheaper to go from America to there either.

BAD - Is there a schedule or agenda for what will be happening over those two days? I live in Orlando so I might come down, but I promised a good friend of mine I would help him move on June 21. I don't know how long that will take, or even if I'll want to do anything after working hard that morning. But if I did come down, even if only on Sunday, what's the plan?

Come on over, hang out, have fun, discuss... There pretty much is no set plan to this, we're doing whatever the hell we want.

And that's fine. But where exactly? If I walk in the lobby of the Tampa Airport Hilton, I don't figure you will all be standing there waiting for my arrival :)

If you head to the Tampa Airport Hilton Bar, there's actually a good chance you'll find me :)

Hotel bar? Hey, I'm all for drinking, but I'd rather not pay $12 for my gin-and-tonic.

We're not comped? :) That was just till you show up. Then we can find the quarter-pitcher place.

I don't know if anyone is still checking this, but I probably won't make it to Tampa until around 7PM tonight (Saturday) See you when I get there.

I'm leaving for work right now. I'll know when I get home tonight at +/- 2:30 AM.
Since this is a convention, if I do make it...should I just look for a bunch of drunk guys with lampshades on their heads ?

Well, the convention took place--mostly over the weekend, but technically for a week. . .
Those who missed it, we had a blast at the Tampa Hilton, and I've got recordings of all of it that will slowly be posted at badave and of course back over here during the course of the week.
I will first get caught up on all my sites, and then plan a random release schedule (I need to amplify all these tracks and try to reduce the noise factor such as AC and Mic Hiss--after completion I will begin posting)
Among things to look forward to
McKludge sings "Dust in the Wind" in the voice of Eric Cartmen
Red Ant imitates Beavis for "You're Beautiful"
Confission makes a comeback
Below Average Dave sings as Stuart from the MadTV comedy show with "You're Beautiful"
Matthias butchers "My Heart Will Go On", but does so in tune so he still gets a perfect score on it
Invisible Boy Sits on the Dock of the Bay
New comer "Mixed Nuts" sings a few songs
and Jeff Reuben does Madonna, Britney Spears and many others. . .
There are probably a total of 40+ recordings from all this plus some pictures. The 8 of us played the games from the Karaoke Revolution series and recorded it. You'll hear us randomly at times in the background laughing and such, if we do this again next year, I'll make sure to bring the games again as drinking and singing. . .go together VERY well. . .

Looking forward to seeing/hearing it all...
Maybe we ought to plan something this side of the pond - what do you think, guys and gals?

Twas a great time (Although the "My Heart Will Go On" parody was recorded techinally BEFORE the convention... I did parody other songs on that game Saturday that were quite hilarious). I wanted to meet Invisible Boy, but I was only there on Saturday due to work related issues. Hopefully Dave got some pictures of him (If that's even possible), but Saturday meeting McKludge, Jeff, and Confission was a blast as was hanging out with Red Ant, and Dave again.
Hopefully this can become an anual or bi-anual thing.

Sounds like fun! Wish I coulda been there.
Here's something for y'all to consider for future gatherings: There are a number of annual sci-fi and gaming-themed conventions that attract funny music artists and fans. For example, last October I went to one called Con on the Cob, where I got to meet (and/or see performances by) a whole bunch of the participants on The Funny Music Project (thefump.com). There's another con called Marscon (in February, I think) that is reportedly the biggest one of all for the funny music crowd. There are many others throughout the year, and several of them welcome new performers. These seem like a natural fit for Amirighters - and they're already planned so you're not reinventing the wheel.
I'm sure someone's compiled a list of these somewhere, but since I don't know where it is, I'll point you instead to the great Luke Ski's tour dates page, since he seems to attend most of the cons:
http://www.thegreatlukeski.com/tour-dates/
Fwiw, I'm not going to be able to make it back to Con on the Cob this year, but I hope to attend Marscon in '09.

Dave, Do you still have the recordings from this night saved anywhere? I would love to go back and visit them.
