Subject: Consumption Junction

Written By: Red Ant on 11/29/07 at 10:50 pm

A while back, there was a thread on Google ego searches. Having heard today that one of my parodies was possibly plagiarized by a local radio station, I decided to see if I could find it on the 'net. I didn't, but came across this site:

www.consumptionjunction.com

(don't bother trying to go there if your filters are active...)

And surprise! Pretty much every recording Amiright authors have done in the past year or so is there. I found parodies by Tor Hershman, Silly Willy Nelson, Spaff (too many to count), Phil (too many to count), Dave (same thing), Me, Luke, Josh 2, Jeff Reuben, Rick Cormier... I stopped counting.

Not that I would be against more exposure for my songs, however most are not credited to the author. I'd say 90% of the songs on CJ have no author listing, and none have links to where they were found.

This one was fun to see:

http://www.consumptionjunction.com/details/78167/0/Four_Hour_Sex_Marathons_Are_My_Favorite_Pastimes/Laugh/Audio/

The title isn't right, and while they "tagged" my name, it's next to this: "4 hour sex marathon, sex, lewd song, beer song, venereal disease, STD". Lovely.

Here's another:

Nice to mention who made it  >:(

Considering this site seems to be nothing more than a thinly veiled sex advertisement and has some stuff on it that might not even get accepted onto whatfreaks, I can't say I'm flattered.

I'm not particularly happy that I'm not properly credited or a link given back to the source of the recording - it's painfully obvious that all mine were lifted from Soundclick within a few days of them being posted there - they know damned well where it came from and who did it.

I'm not here to make money or get famous, but I think it's a crock that consumption junction can't even bother to link back to the site where their ripped off music comes from.

I will be emailing them in the next few days asking them to remove all of my recordings.

Best of luck in trying to get them to take notice - I've seen Mend My PC turn up there, but hadn't noticed any of the others.  It didn't really seem worth bothering about, to be honest (IIRC they have viewing figures which were negligible)

I didn't see anything indicating views - the ratings are seldom given (one of my songs was a 2.5, I voted it a 10 and it jumped to 4 something), but ratings don't mean much - I've gotten just 2 of them at Soundclick, yet have had thousands of listens.

But I see what you are saying - with a site like that, chances are not a lot of people come there for the music anyway...

Why not?

Because, realistically, it's a pipe dream.  Album sales all around are in the toilet, MTV doesn't play videos, parodies rarely get aired on the radio, and your target audience is fairly small.  As STG once said 'writing parodies is either a fun hobby, weird obsession or crappy career choice'. He's right on all accounts.

For me, I write to have fun, blow off steam, make a point, mock a crappy song, etc. Writing because I have to to earn a paycheck - no thanks.

I'm not really concerned about being famous either, but I would like it if the (few) people on CJ who heard my songs knew that I made them, regardless if they liked them or not.

This site has issues with my web browser(IE6), it runs though....  :P

I do agree that it is crappy for them to do this(Very crappy at that).

They seem to come up for every single song I've ever done in search engines, I haven't looked at them because the instant I try some pornographicesque image starts to load. . .which I tend to avoid.  It's rather disturbing that they don't credit the authors though, you have to wonder why they'd do that if they don't try to take credit for it themselves either.  I'm wondering if they have a 'posting' feature where members post their content, and perhaps it's not Consumption Junction, but a member who is posting all of our works.

There are a few sites around the 'net that simply grab any old material (I'd like to suggest it's the best, with some kind of editorial input, but experience says otherwise) to try and get as many hits as possible, presumably with a view to getting advertising revenue.

I'll second what Jack said about what STG said about writing parodies - just because one person has managed to make a decent living out of it, doesn't mean there's a huge untapped market...
