Subject: Badave.com, Messageboard is going to be revisited
Written By: skittlesking on 03/24/07 at 8:31 pm
I had no choice but to delete the messageboard, unlike the comment threads I'm building myself-the board DID NOT log people's IP addresses so I could not block out spammers. As a result, the board got hit by 79 pornographic images/ads, 65 ads for viagra, 51 gambling and a number of other lesser numbers. Without the option of blocking out by IP addresses, I had no choice but to delete the whole forum until I design one myself or find one that does read people's IPs. . .I blocked the emails, but whenever I do they would just resign as another email. . .It's scary to think that this is what we have to deal with for freedom of speech-which I am a strong supporter of. . .but I think a fine line has been crossed when forums that are open to the public get hit with sexual imagery, not just poses but actual sex--no age verification or anything. . .that's why it had to go, and I apologize, I will build one even if I have to make it to where all new people go through an approval process for their first few posts, I hope it doesn't come to that. . .but I can't allow these type of ads to spam my normal boards. . .thank you in advance for your understanding.

IP blocks are almost useless for controlling spam. A registration system like the inthe00s.com messageboard is pretty effective (of course, you still need a system that records IPAs). If the comment system is like Amiright's, then captchas are the way to go. Captchas are coming to Amiright soon since manually removing spam is often tedious, time consuming work.
99% of spam is generated by anonymous proxy servers, or like AOL. The IPs are dynamic, therefore banning them isn't effective.
If you PM ChuckyG he might be able to help you out with keeping spam away from your site.
I know it's a setback, Dave, but I'm sure the site will be killer when you are finished.

IP blocking is going to be next to useless for spam blocking purposes. You need something that requires a CAPTCHA (image with numbers) in it to register. Most of the spammers that I have to deal with, will randomly use different IPs.
