Subject: Comment Spam

Written By: Red Ant on 01/04/07 at 12:25 am

For those who might see this thread, and visit AmiRight, particularly the latest comments, here are some ways to spot spam easier:

~ Multiple identical comments posted within seconds of each other, and that have no relation to the parody/news article, etc., are, 99 times of out 100, spam.

~ Short, but grammatically challenged comments posted by people with odd names you've never seen before (like "Jozef") that seem to be flattery (e.g., "good site!2") are spam.

~ Anyone using, in the name field (or the comment field), an advertisement like "florida mortgage", "casino online", "I'm emo cheap", and so on, is spamming.

~ Random strings of garble, sometimes a paragraph or more long, are spam.

~ Recently, there have been a lot of "sex" spammers. Due to content, I can't really tell you what to look for, but I can say that most every comment that contains numerous words of a graphic sexual nature is spam, and also profanity.

~ Many parodies/news links/recordings that are spammed are "archived" ones, i.e., they haven't gotten a legitimate comment in quite some time, usually 18 months or more. A flurry of commenting on an older work is usually a sign of spamming.

Right now, spam is moderate, meaning I have to wipe about 10-20 spammed comments a day. Removing spam is easy; spotting it is not, and trolling through two days' worth of comments once a day isn't exactly a picnic.

Getting rid of spam, particularly "outside spam" (that is, people whose sole purpose in visiting AmiRight is spamming) is very important, because left unchecked, spam increases by a large amount, and may also attract other spammers. While this may have the appearance of only a very minor inconvenience/annoyance to you, the reader, and a increased workload for me, it could result in going to a registration system of some type for posting comments (which would not be good), or in the worst case scenario, a removal of the comment feature altogether (that's what happened to whatfreaks.com).

As a request to all, I ask that whenever you are on the site, whether that be daily or once a year, to look at the latest comments and report anything that falls within the above criteria. You are not a rat for reporting comments that have no business being posted in the first place, rather you are helping the site remain open and free to all others who wish to comment on the various sections.

I'd like to reiterate again that removing "outside spam" is my top priority, and usually my only concern, but if I come across comments that are otherwise inappropriate, I will delete them too. 99% of you have nothing to worry about though: it's the 1% of commentors that make editing necessary.

Thanks for the help, Dave. You can either leave the URL here, PM me, or report the comment, though I'd prefer if you see any spam to leave the URL of the parody, news article, etc. here on this thread (I'm sometimes bad at reading PMs in a timely manner).
