Subject: AmIRight Author Rankings

Written By: Rex on 03/15/06 at 2:59 pm

Hello everyone! Obviously, I have too much time on my hands.

As we all know, the AmIRight rankings must be taken with a large grain of salt because of the 1's guy, retribution guy, and others whose votes can skew the numbers. With that in mind, here are the current top authors on March 15, 2006.

(If you're not familiar with the voting system, AmIRight visitors can rate parodies from 1-5 on Pacing, How Funny, and Overall, with 5 being best.)

All Authors
----------------
Most Prolific (number of parodies posted)
Malcolm Higgins (1538), runner up William Tong (1245)

Most Attention (number of votes received)
William Tong (45517), runner up John A. Barry (6292)
I find this fascinating. One author has over 45 thousand votes and the next in line has a little over 6 thousand?

Authors with 10 or more Parodies
------------------------------------------------
Best Pacing
Doug Brockmeier (4.91), runner up Kristof Robertson (4.89)

Funniest
Kristof Robertson (4.86), runner up Guy DiRito (4.85)

Overall
Doug Brockmeier (4.92), runner up Heathcliff the Cat (4.89)

Authors with 100 or more Parodies
-------------------------------------------------
Best Pacing
Kristof Robertson (4.89), runners up Johnny D and Stuart McArthur (4.87)

Funniest
Kristof Robertson (4.86), runner up Guy DiRito (4.85)

Overall
Kristof Robertson (4.88), runner up Guy DiRito (4.86)

This can only mean one thing. We must stop Kristof. Or keep encouraging him. One or the other.  ;D

I don't get it. How did Kristof beat out Spaff in the humor category?  ???

And SOME people *ahem* just don't get voted as high in humor because of the stupid 1 Guy!

Not to say that Kristof isn't FABulous...because he is, and he knows that he is...and he knows that I think that he is...

...and this is just the Elf speculating...

...but I don't really think that Kristof writes many parodies that are "controversial..." (for lack of a better word) ...while several other authors (Spaff included) have written things that are more likely to get 1s from people who disagree on subject matter, rather than basing votes on actual parody merit.

Also...I think Spaff gets more jealousy based 1s...just because EVERYONE uses him as "The Standard" by which all other parodists must be judged.  I'm sure some (sad and bitter) people just get sick of hearing how good he is.

I mean...the numbers CLEARLY mean nothing...I've even got higher averages than Spaff...and we all know that I'm not that good... ;)

(Oh, who am I kidding...of COURSE I'm good...I only pretend to be less talented than Mr. Spaff, because I know how delicate his poor ego is... ;)...)

And SOME people *ahem* just don't get voted as high in humor because of the stupid 1 Guy!

As for "The 1s Guy," I couldn't care less about them.  (yes, you have to know there are more than one)  I think that every newbie goes through a stage where they feel victimized by the 111 votes...and most of us wrote a parody about it, too.

But eventually, it will hopefully become clear to you that it's the comments that matter.

Well, statistically you ARE, if your average goes to prove that, it can't all be because you're soo much cuter than he is! ;)

Spaff himself wrote somewhere, and I quote: "Most of my stuff is inappropriate to somebody. At least I hope it is, or it wouldn't be satire."

For a parodist/satirist, getting only good votes and friendly comments can be the equivalent of being a man who constantly get to hear from women that they "just wanna be friends", they're being told that they are doing everything right, yet apparently they're doing something wrong!

If you (whoever you are) didn't get that I'll have to say that Arwen's complete list of parodies should be your required reading until you do! ;)

Malcolm has 1778 then, you haven't seen his 250 whatfreak-ers.  :o

William Tong has his own website and from what I gather a fairly large on line following.

Also, there was a vote loss on 7-28-04 that wiped out thousands of votes. I believe Guy Dirito lost over 8000 that day.

You answered the question with your second sentence.

To quote Spaff: "1's don't bother me; they're really a political statement rather than a performance evaluation. But I'll admit to finding 4's disappointing."

When one writes stuff that is extremely funny it (usually) has more of a chance to piss a few people off.

As Arwen said, the comments are much more important anyway. Everyone gets 1s from time to time, they are almost never accompanied by a comment.

At the beginning of my parody writing career (which I have taken a...let's see...2 year sabbatical from?  Geez, it's like I suddenly had a social life or 117 boyfriendsWE'REGETTINGOFFTHETOPIC) my computer internet was wonky and I could vote however many times I wanted on my parodies...making my average score shoot sky-high even though most of my work was sophomoric.

As far as most attention, what about parodies with a large number of comments?  Because writing a comment takes a longer amount of time than simply clicking a button...well...ahem.

Come to think of it, maybe it's not such a horribly bad thing that Emi's on indefinite hiatus...I've sort of filled the teenage girl parodist slot that she left vacant...Haha JUST KIDDING Emi, nobody could replace you!

Why do I feel like a dirty old man for even READING the last two posts??  Naw, it ain't true...I'm hardly ever more than 2 out 3 of those things at the same time...I know I've read some of your stuff, Cat...I recall (I think) that you do sometimes use OS material that an old fart like me might be familiar with.  So...what was the actual subject on this thread again...I know it wasn't "Teen-age Girl Parody Writer's...I woulda been here sooner if it was...OH...yeah..."Author Rankings"...Yeah...so what...I USED to get all into and Bent out of shape over it...and, yes, I still like to see a nice "Average" next to my name...why not?  And when I first started posting here I nagged people at work to come here and vote on my stuff...I really needed the validation then...I was in a real crappy personal place at that particular moment in time...lotsa questions, no answers, plenty of anxiety...whatever...it was a big lift for my stuff to get posted and noticed...But, anyway,  I noticed after a while that the ratings reflect some things somewhat accurately...and completely misses the mark in other cases...For one thing, if you post stuff hardly anyone knows you can still have marvelous averages...a ton of  pieces with 3 or 4 votes...all of them "5-5-5"...happens that I have a whole load of stuff like that...Hey, they are good pieces, but using OS materially that is from lesser-known groups or works...and from 35-40 years ago...If you post stuff that more than a handful of people vote on you will likely get some votes of less than "5"...it can happen even  for the best stuff you've ever written...Anyway, the way the Averages are tabulated THAT piece is not as good and that piece you got three "5-5-5" votes on...

So...what's my point?   OK...have fun with the numbers...enjoy, obsess, bathe in their luminous glow, curse the Gods and whine...write your "thank you's"...toss in a venomous rant at the cretin who gave you "4-1-1" or whatever on a perfectly paced piece that is funny as hell...click "Submit" and then sit down and write something you want to write...and post it if it's good enough and passes the content test...You'll enjoy it, feel some level of accomplishment...and also get better at it without even realizing it...

So that's the advice from this particular dirty old man...

later...

Paul, I remember you were THE very first big name to leave a comment on one of my parodies (a little ditty called "You're Taking Too Damn Long" written what seems like eons ago)...I like to think I've come a considerable way since then.

Although now I only have 16
