Subject: Subjects, Songs and Words

Written By: Random Ol on 10/13/05 at 3:12 pm

I think of a couple of subjects but then find myself using the same topic over and over again. How do YOU find a good subject?

I get my fave bands and parody there songs but then find to many Red Hot Chili Pepper conversions how should i find a good song, a good topic so they both mix?

Any tips?

Try using current events in the news, especially funny/strange/weird items, as sources for ideas.

For example: I read a news story about some bozos who thought they were stealing gasoline from an off-road truck refueling station, when in reality they were stealing diesel fuel --- which wouldn't work in their vehicle.  That news story gave me the idea for this parody:

Here is an excellent source for interesting/funny/weird news stories:

If that link doesn't work,  go to http://news.yahoo.com and click on "Odd News".

Write about anything you want to; food, animals, politics, toilet humor, news articles (as Johnny D did above), celebrities, grammar, mathematics, yourself, etc. A "good subject" is a bit of a misnomer and varies from one person to another, the only subject I can think of that aren't usually good are "inside joke" type things, like a phrase your best friend might know but the rest of the world doesn't.

As for RHCP, there aren't that many parodies of them on the site (not sure what you meant by conversions).

There are innumerable "good songs", finding one other people know can sometimes be problematic (I've given up ever making another Faith No More parody since practically no one knows their material).

Classic rock, Golden Oldies and Traditional pieces are usually known by more people and can be good choices, though there are people on the site who appreciate nearly every genre of music. If you write a RHCP piece I will most assuredly look at it. Getting more music in my collection has helped as well.

Personally, a good subject is anything I can make work within the framework of The Original Song (TOS) and is somewhat funny, though I do profound and bizzare subjects sometimes.

If you find yourself repeating words, try www.rhymezone.com for synonyms and rhymes.

A lot of times, I try to take stuff that happens in my everyday life and sort of twist it up to the extreme...but I almost always change the names to protect the innocent...

Sometimes, though, my life is so crazy that I don't have to do a lot of twisting...  ;)

Some of my parodies start when I hear a song and one of the lyrics twists in my head. For example, on day the Thompson Twins "King For a Day" was playing, which starts off:

"I know you well / And I can tell / there's something on your mind"

which somehow went through the weirdness of my mind and emerged as:

"I know you well / And I can tell / there's something on your nose"

and from such a tiny beginning came "Acne Zit from Hell".

Often ideas just pop into my head at random points in time. My latest submission came to me when I was in the shower, and another time posting a comment on another's parody gave me a spark of inspiration. I know the whole "muse" theory is flawed, but hey, it can work.
