Subject: New weekly "club"--Show & Tell?

Written By: agrimorfee on 06/13/05 at 8:00 am

I hit upon this idea on how to make use of the amiright.com and give more traffic and exposure to all authors.

I propose a weekly "Show & Tell" thread, a feature harking back to Fridays in grade school where we as students were asked to bring in an item from home and show it off, describe it, or whatever. The amiright.com version, however, will start with an agreed upon style of parody or genre topic. Each week, participants will scour amiright and find 1 or 2 (or even more if they wish) favorite or recently found examples of the topic. Then on Friday, we would present our examples, with links to the parody and any optional commentary. Anyone can join any week. The only rules ares that you may not present your own parodies, and no one negatively criticizes the choices by the presenter.

Topics could be "Science Fiction", "Food", "Politics", "Commercials", "Love Songs" , "Movies", "Grossness", "Break Up Songs"...or even fine examples of favorite songs like American Pie or Edmund Fitzgerald, this list could go on and on.

Who wants to join in? Shall we start with a topic on Friday, or might we have enough interest today to have an actual  "SHow & Tell" this Friday?

I think it would be good to let people post their own parodies.  That way, at least it's the active writers who are getting the exposure, and not some gal who posted some parodies 3 years ago and isn't even involved anymore.  I think it would actually be great to make people write new parodies based on a particular topic or artist or song.

There are already PLENTY of threads/contests where authors can showcase their own work.

I think Agri's idea of sharing favorite's of other authors is FABulous.

I'll definitely play, whenever the first topic is posted... :)

2 people saying "go for it" is enough for me to make an official beginning then. Hopefully a bump up will inspire more participants.

Let's make our opening round of Show & Tell simple----

Pick out some of your favorite (or newly discovered) FOOD parodies and start posting in this thread anytime this FRIDAY. I will try to keep track of our topics and announce new ones every Monday in a new thread. We will make determinations of other rules not thought of in my intro post as we go along. Happy hunting. :)

I haven't kept track of parodies that I have considered great...my main method of operation will be to surf through the site to find something in the topic that appeals to me that I haven't read before. List your faves, or find new parodies, the choice is up to everyone.

Darn, I picked Mike's Welcome To McDonald's too. But I also wanted to point out at the work of others who were thinking of the same exact song and idea. Thanks to Chucky's new Performer Index, it makes this a snap to research. It's kind of fun to see variations on a theme and compare/contrast their strengths and weaknesses.

Observe:
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/gunsnroses0.shtml (note that "My name is Kenny" is the first author here to do this parody idea)
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/gunsnroses50.shtml (newcomer Mikey Squirrel)
http://www.amiright.com/parody/80s/gunsnroses4.shtml (Mike Armstrong)

and author Lady Luck Mooney took an extra step of giving a completely different title than the others:

I hereby declare Welcome To The Jungle parodies as a tribute/mockery of McDonald's to be closed for further consideration.  :D

Great idea, Aggro!

Just to warn you, I'm going to use this club to pimp Claude Prez's parodies. Because that's what I do.

For "food," I gotta go with "You Ate Somebody's Pet":

And I just discovered to my sheer delight that Phil Alexander RECORDED it:

Also, thanx, DC, whoever you are, for plugging one of mine. (In case y'all were wondering, even though "DC" is a mystery guest, it's not me using a disguise to pimp my own stuff. Honestly.)
