Subject: Do you post URLs (web addresses) on amiright? Please respond in this message
Written By: ChuckyG on 06/03/05 at 9:12 am
As some of you may have noticed, the site is getting spammed every few days by a really dumb spammer.
I think I can knock down his attempts, without resorting to captchas (those image things with distorted numbers).
Basically, I want to limit web addresses in comments, to an unlimited number of amiright and inthe00s links, but any outside links would only be allowed once per day.
So if you post a message like this:
You should visit site http://www.xyz.com
you could only post that url in a message, once per day.
A message like this:
The song of the month contest nominees can be found at: http://www.inthe00s.com/something/something
would be fine

The only time I post an external web address on amiright would be at the bottom of a song I submit to my personal website. So this would be no problem for me.

those won't count anyways. strictly comments, since that's where the problem is.
If you have a legitmate need to post a URL to the same site more than once a day on different parodies, I want to hear from ya.
This won't stop a motivated spammer, but it will certainly cut down their ability to make work for me.

In case that ever becomes the option you're most seriously considering, I'll just beg in advance: Please, please, please, PLEASE don't use the distorted numbers thingy! Several of the affiliates I used to use went to those -- I had to drop them because by the time I figured out what the characters were, the characters were expired and I could not get logged in to save my life. Even with my glasses, I have a great deal of trouble seeing them. I'm still with one of the companies because they have the account with a company I really like and would happily promote without any hope of compensation, but I haven't been able to log in to my account with them for months, when the mandatory account update rolls around, I'll get a note telling me I'm dropped from their program and that'll be the last of my associations with the blurry-squiggle-login companies. :( (If you have to employ them, though, you have to.)
As for posting URLs, the only time I can think of that I would need to post more than one outside URL is if I submit more than one parody in a day (hey, it's happened, before, just not lately!) and I have searched out webbed copies of the originals to be used as posting aids. That would be in the prefacing comments of the parodies, themselves, not in the feedback comments section. I know a lot of authors include a link to their websites in the tag section of their parody submissions, so it would affect them whenever they have multiple submissions and even if they limit their submissions to one per day, they'd no longer be able to include links to both their websites and to pacing aids.

reasons like that, plus the fact that it prevents people who are totally blind from using the site, are one of the reasons I want to avoid them.

Again, this only applies to comments by site visitors. It will not look at the URLs included by the author when posting their parody.

for now, I'm just going to limit urls to three per message. I don't think this spammer will catch on for awhile.

Ah, well then, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish. :) Scratch my previous response and insert "not applicable to me" in its place. :) I have posted some outside links, but I don't think I've posted more than one in any given day and probably haven't ever posted more than one outside link in the comments of any one parody.
Thanks for considering other options before resorting to the blurry-squiggles. :) (I meant to include that with my begging and got ahead of myself.)

yeah, don't worry. Like I said, I hate 'em too. They're also getting easy to get around, lots of weakness for the spammers to discover. I do have the advantage that the software I use is all custom stuff, which means a spammer has to be real dedicated to posting it on one of my sites.

Can't think of any time I've needed to post >1 link to the same thing on the same day - sounds like a good idea for a catchall to me.

well, it looks like the spammer tried this morning, since I got one of the typical pieces of crap on a reported message this morning. None of them show up in the latest comments though. So far so good.

Well, since my screen name is a URL, I post it in every comment. I haven't been blocked yet, but if it starts happening, I suppose I could use start using my real name - Tokusou Sentai Blessranger.
