Subject: Any Mickey Mantle Fans?
Written By: Leo Jay on 02/09/05 at 7:34 pm
I was thinking about trying to write "Mantle" to Elton John's "Daniel", but I thought someone who was more of a fan of his would be able to really do it justice.
Shouldn't be too hard to write, I don't think, and could really make a good tribute, if anyone wants to give it a shot.

Then write it. I'm a Yankee hater, but I think Michael Pacholek is a big fan. Anyway, here's a rough first and fourth verse on the fly (I included the original lyrics for the second and third stanzas". If you like it, fill in the other two and post it. But please give me a co-writer credit. If you don't like it, no harm, no foul.

Mantle is playing tonight in the game
I can see the red Sox fans praying for rain
Oh and I can see Mantle reaching the sky
'Cuz it looks like Mantle, must hit the clouds ev'ry try
They say spain is pretty though I’ve never beenÂÂ
Well daniel says it’s the best place that he’s ever seenÂÂ
Oh and he should know, he’s been there enough
Lord I miss daniel, oh I miss him so much
Daniel my brother you are older than meÂÂ
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won’t heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than i (Your knees are fried and you drink more than I)
Daniel you’re a star in the face of the sky (Mantle you're a star in the Bronx of NY)
Mantle is playing tonight in the game
I can see the Red Sox fans praying for rain
Oh and I can see Mantle reaching the sky
'Cuz it looks like Mantle, must hit the clouds ev'ry try
Oh yeah it looks like Mantle, does hit the clouds ev'ry try

Mantle my hero you were so great to see

Very, very nicely done. Should be a piece of cake for you to finish this off for tomorrow's entries.

I'm sorry, just saw your post. I was trying to get you to fill in the blanks and tweak it. Hope you don't mind that I did submit a write of this. I did credit you on the opening comments; afterall it was your idea. If the submission is a problem, I'll withdraw it - just say so in the comments.

Darn, I'm a huge Mantle fan, I would have liked to have a crack at this. Well, it wouldn't have been as good as what Kimba T. Dogg posted, anyway. Nice job with this one!

No, my whole point was that sure, I could've done a bit of research and hacked something decent out, but because I have no real attachment to the subject, I preferred to turn the entire idea to someone who might welcome the opportunity to write a heartfelt tribute.ÂÂ
Thanks for the credit on the parody, but it was completely unnecessary. Ideas are cheap. It's all about the execution.
