Written By: Stuart McArthur on 12/07/04 at 9:38 am

Please list your top ten Beatles songs (doesn't have to be in order)

I'm compiling a list (from various sources) which will be posted on Friday, so please submit before Thursday

thanks :) :) :)

Rules:  1: must have a single title  (ie. "side 2 of Abbey Road" ineligible)
2: must have appeared on a Beatles LP before split-up  (ie. long-lost bootlegs etc. ineligible)
3: each song chosen gets one point

are we counting the Anthology series as post split-up?

For example: "Not Guilty" was recorded with the Beatles during the White Album sessions, and appears on their anthology 3 disc, but first appeared as a solo Harrison track.

What about the tracks on the Past Masters CDs which are from singles and American (not English) LPs?

For example: "I Feel Fine" is on the EPs, not the LPs and Past Masters Volume One.

yes I'm a pain in the rear.  What? You wanted just their pop tunes, another Beatles One perhaps?

Not Guilty
She's So Heavy
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Helter Skelter
Things We Said Today
Come Together
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
A Day In The Life
We Can Work It Out
Got To Get You Into My Life

Substitute "Hey Bulldog" and then "Something" if those two aforementiond tracks don't fit.  I actually loaded up each album into winamp and looked over the tracks for this.  It's just amazing how almost all their tracks are just so stellar even after hearing them hundreds of times.  "Not Guilty" is one of the few Anthology tracks that stood out so well on the Anthology sets, that I thought it was released before that.

Two of us
Michelle
Drive my Car
Taxman
Got to get you into my life

so many choices

this is where I knew it would get tricky.  I ran this survey for a local group that I run who meet once a month (website is listed on my profile) and every month we have a pop culture survey of no consequence.  This one was very popular, but the "of no consequence" aspect still prevails.

In other words, I had to work backwards from the idea to get the rules, and finally settled on an alphabetical list of tracks I downloaded that purportedly listed all their tracks pre-bust-up.  I'm using that as my reference, and....

"Not Guilty" is not one of them, sorry .  Not that anyone would care if it appeared on the final list, but it won't even get to issue stage because a song needs 2 votes to get on the final list.

"I Feel Fine" is on the list, and already has 3 votes, so that's a definite

yep, I'll put Hey Bulldog in instead of Not Guilty, so you get 10.  I agree with your stellar comment (see my post on Rick's over-rated bands thread).  I squeezed out my top ten with apologies to 60 others that should have been included...

thanks for doing the list mate :)

Prepare for the 'Generation Cringe'. I can't say that I have actually heard a Beatles song from start to finish, so I'll just whack in the various choruses or excerpts that I do know:

"Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks like they are here to stay *somethingsomething* Yesterday."
"She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah..."
"We all live on a Yellow Submarine. A yellow submarine. A yellow submarine."
"I've gut tuh git you intuh ma life!" (as sung on Australian Idol)
"Let the war be over..." (Delta Goodrem's version)

I'm unsure if 'Georgie Girl' is a Beatle track. Forgive me for my cultural ignorance.

Ooh, this would be a tough one do figure out...I'll see if I can come up with a list cut down to 10 by Thursday...maybe not...I will probably be dithering and changing my mind into next year if I get wrapped up in it...

I'm wondering what this survey is for, but hey, it only takes a minute.

It might for you - I've just had to pare my initial list down from fifty-something songs.  In no particular order:

Back in the USSR
Got to get you into my life
Helter Skelter
Eight days a week
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Revolution (both versions, for different reasons)
I am the Walrus
Lady Madonna
I saw her standing there
Carry that weight

Hmm... I've parodied seven of those: is that significant, I wonder?

Bit late but I thought of the rest:

Cry Baby Cry
I'm So Tired
Can't Buy Me Love
All My Loving
