Subject: Zero tolerance towards sexual topics
Written By: ChuckyG on 07/25/04 at 9:01 am
I started letting up on the submission of these parodies, and today I find almost every other submission is on the topic of sex.
No more.
Arguments about "so and so had a worse one approved" also won't fly. I'm not even going to allow resubmissions if it's rejection.
The rule is no sexual topics, and that she be pretty clear to understand. That covers biological discussions or whatever else people keep thinking is "passable". If it deals with one person or two or any other number using their sexual organs in any fashion, don't expect it to get approved.

Chucky,
Do I assume correctly, then, that in order for a parody with conscientiously-crafted double-entendre to be accepted, its lyrics must not explicitly describe sex organs or sex acts?
For example....if somebody submitted a parody about a rocket-ship penetrating the rings of Uranus and coming quickly into a mysterious cavern deep, deep inside that mysterious planet, that would be OK, correct?

i think the point is that parodies full of sexual innuendo are no good either because then the parody will be perceived as controversial if the double entendres are understood and as pretty pointless if they go over someone's head.

Point taken, Ethan. But it is, after all, totally subjective and in the eye of the beholder, is it not?

I think it means he's sick of people pushing the envelope and crying about it when he doesn't give in. Jeez, give the poor guy a break.

You know, I must admit I'm a bit surprised to be taking this stance, but I have to say at this point I tend to agree with Claude. I stated my general position and opinion over on that discussion thread that ChuckyG & Johnny D opened up, so I've put my two cents and any other loose change in my pocket down there, spoke my peace and had my say on the issue.  While I'm going to miss some of the humor and by-play that a clever and well-devised "Sex-Plicit" piece engenders, I've decided to accept ChuckyG's new policy at face value, remove the output crank from my paro-porn-o-graph machine, sweep up the pieces of those works in progress that no longer have any chance of passing muster here, modify the focus of my story-lines to comply with the new guidelines and simply move forward from here. While I have enjoyed writing, reading, commenting and checking out other reader's comments on the much of the "X-Plicit" stuff I would just as soon not continue to try and "finesse" and "out-guess" ChuckyG and his folks here as to exactly how much, what and when a "Sexed-up" entry might be smuggled past the sentries. Especially now that he has made the point rather clear that he doesn't want to fool around with this issue any more. While I realize I can be a pain-in-the-ass now and then I really do try not to be for the most part. And while I did a little kidding about it I really did not get any special satisfaction from the times I was able to slide a borderline piece through. My thinking about the system and situation in recent months was that I would write whatever I wrote, print those pieces that I considered somewhat questionable and review it carefully, looking for places that were way over the top on one end and places where I might possibly be able to rephrase or revise lines to make them less blatant, but still uphold my story-line. And then I would hold it back and look at it again in a day or two before deciding whether to send it in or it.  When I think back on it I'm realizing now just how much that procedure was retarding my writing process and reducing my overall output of work...it was just too much time and effort and creativity that I was squandering there. Well, I guess that's about all for now...Gonna see if I can write some more parodies tonight. I've done 4 already today and have got one or two more in the works...

Thank you for the heads-up, ChuckyG. I totally respect your decision, although this is definitely going to take some getting used to. I think you've been quite lenient as far as sex-infused parodies throughout the time I've been here, so this probably comes off as quite startling to some most me.

Nah, I'm cool with the decision. I guess I'll have to resort to being, in Woody Allen's words, a 'Sly Orator'... (hopefully Johnny D will get that one) and actually rely on talent rather than crude descriptions of copulation for votes.
Ooh... what does it look like this fella's doing: :D
Oh, this lad is doing it, too: :o
And it appears that there are two involved here: ::)
That's right, these three smileys are enjoying smut-free parodies!

A "Sly Orator" - is that something like a "cunning linguist" (as Deep Purple would have it, a "master of many tongues")?
Anyway... if that's what Chucky wants, that's what he gets - but a quick request to everyone not to go all scatological and fill amiright up with sh...ocking stuff. Let's try and use some good ol' just plain wit, shall we?

that would probably be ok. I've never had a problem with that.

For those wondering, the main impetus behind this decision, is that I created whatfreaks for this kind of content. I've tried in the past to try and be a little more leniant, but then the weekend rolls around and I find it gets a lot worse.
I know the other site isn't being updated at the moment, but maybe if I force the improper content from the site once and for all, it will begin to serve a purpose. When whatfreaks was running, if I told people I'd only accept the entry for that site, I was usually told to nevermind, which is one of the reasons I stopped bothering with that site.
I know a few people mentioned the need for a flag or adult tag, but I personally would feel better if the content was on a seperate site. If it's on the same site, it'll cause more problems with crappy webfilters and advertising. The other site has voting but no comments section. If I add comments and make sure the site gets updated more often, will people use it?

I'm on your side 100%, Chucky, when it becomes a dollars-and-cents issue of you winning your battle against those stupid web-filters and nervous advertisers. So be it ..... no contest ..... message received.
If you add comments to Whatfreaks and resume updating it on some kind of predictable schedule, then I think there's a reasonable possibility that I might use it from time to time when I get an idea that I think is clever enough to post but that wouldn't be acceptable on Amiright any more.
Thanks for bearing with all of this.
Johnny D :)

ChuckyG - In answer to your question as to whether anyone would use "Whatfreaks" if it were updated, etc., I can say that I would certainly have some occasions to use it. I'd rather post questionable stuff on a site that existed for that purpose than try to shovel stuff by your reviewers here.
Thanks

That, and if a parody didn't pass muster, then (if possible) e-mail the author and suggest submitting it to the other site. Then you have the same set-up I have on Yahoo where I have regular parodies in one group (spoofsandparodies) and adult parodies in the other (adult_spoofs_and_parodies). My recent parody of "Blow Me A Kiss", which is saturated with innuendo but makes no actual reference to sex organs, is posted in my adult group because of the double entendres (the original was from Indianapolis shock jocks Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold). Had I been here and learned of the new rule, I probably would have sent it there and I still might duplicate it there for more audience.
Plus, a good parody writer can make funny parodies that aren't obscene, not just ones that are.

I don't think censorship is good. If we start censoring this topic, one that has produced many great parodies, you know people will start looking for other places to submit. Couldn't we just put a "Parental Advisory" tag on the songs including this, or other offensive themes?

Indeed, I went to homestarrunner about two years ago and eveyrtime you visit it, the backgorund theme changes on homepage and the intro sequence for 'First Time Here?' has subtle differences each time also. Could someone enlighten me about this site some more? ie. why it is so ingeniusly funny and why?

I'm SO glad she's back, by the way.
Anyway...for fear of getting off topic...if you two want to discuss Homestarrunner...i.e...the greatest thing on earth...we'd better do it on The Only Thread that Matters.
Because there is no such thing as "off topic" there.
If you want to talk about Homestar having sex...you may continue on this thread...
