Subject: Parodies of Broadway Show Tunes

Written By: Johnny_D on 04/23/04 at 2:07 pm

Hi everybody - if anyone has parodies of Broadway show-tunes, please let us know about them here!  If they're posted on Amiright, you can give a link to the parody - otherwise, feel free to post the show-tune parody directly on this thread.

I've got show-tunes on my mind . . . tonight (Friday April 23) is opening night for The Concord Players production of the musical "1776", in which I play Dr. Lyman Hall, delegate from Georgia.

I've been working on parodies for the songs in "1776" (of course!), and I submitted one of them for posting on Amiright - "But Mr. Adams" - a song-and-dance number in which John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman all try to figure out who should write the Declaration of Independence.

I would like to share other writers' parodies of Broadway show-tunes with my fellow cast & crew members at The Concord Players (something fun to do once the beer, wine, and hooch gets flowing at cast parties!).

Thanks!

Johnny D (a.k.a. "Dr. Lyman Hall", www.concordplayers.org )

Would "Fiddler on the Roof" qualify?  I did one from there...twice..."If I Were a Rich Man".

:) I've done that one, too:
If I were the Dark Lord

Is "Cabaret" broadway enough?
Killer Ray

Or my most recent parody:
Point out the Planets to "Brush up your Shakespeare" from Kiss Me Kate (Cole Porter)

I think three's enough to be going on with...

I' ve done two:

"Hanging Chads & Hanging Judges" to "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from "Les Miserables"

"The Knife" to "To Life" from "Fiddler on the Roof"

I saw "1776" in Santa Barbara a few years ago and I found it to be a very entertaining look at one of the most important events in our nation's history.  Among the songs I remember are "The Lees of Virginia," "Guns and Molasses," and "But, Mr. Adams." So I look forward to your parody of the latter.  I am sorry that I won't be able to travel 3,000 to see your performance; but, anyway, break a leg, Johnny D.

Last year me and some of my friends in the cast of Into the Woods started writing a parody of No More during hell week, but it never got finished... ah, memories. Especially the "wish we had a door" line, that being a result of not having any sound insulation, like an actual closing door, between the stage and the backstage area, hence the director saying that if she heard anyone talking during the show, they all owed her a quarter each.

I LOVE 1776. I saw the play many, many moons ago (with Dean Jones as John Adams). I just recently purchased the movie on DVD (had it on video) and could probably quote most of the lines-that is how many times I have seen it. My fav has to be "But, Mr. Adams" and I laugh everytime I see it. I really look forward to your parodies since it is something that I really know.

Break a leg in your performance

And you're welcome again and thanks for the 5s ;-). Mmm... I can't wait for the alphabet contest to get to O, so I can use One Month More. The other two are pretty eh, but that one is definitely one of my favorites of mine. It's especially great because it actually started as a way of bugging this girl I liked in my senior class who was obsessing about Les Mis :-).

"SUV, Stupid Car" (parody of "Jesus Christ, Superstar")

By the way, check out Forbidden Broadway if you haven't already: http://www.forbiddenbroadway.com - I'd love to see them live sometime, but in the meantime I have two of their cds.

They have a song that starts with "Andrew Lloyd, Superstar! Andrew Lloyd, why are you so bizarre?" But then it goes into a non-JCS song.

Oh yes, "Forbidden Broadway".  :D I heard the first CD...my favorite was their knock on Mandy Patinkin, "Somewhat Overindulgent".

So . . . do you have some parodies involving Brad, Janet, Dr. Scott, Magenta, Columbia, Riff-Raff, Dr. Frank-n-furter, and Rocky?  ;D

One "Time Warp" parody, though it would probably have more resonance for a Brit audience than an American one:
Let's Join The Euro

I've thought about doing a few Joseph & his ATDC parodies; I've even pondered the idea of doing a complete parody of Joseph, but haven't managed to think up a coherent plot, yet.

Oh, yes - a West Side Story one:

Ah yes. I tried writing a parody of Time Warp, but never got past the chorus on that one.

Howsabout an esterification reaction (http://www.chemguide.co.uk/organicprops/alcohols/esterification.html)

It's a bit of a ponger
Whoo-wee! What a smell

But what I came here to write was... I did end up writing a kind of sequel to "Let's Join the Euro", though it's about the referendum for the European constitution... "Sweet Plebiscite" to "Sweet Transvestite".. seeing as Michael Howard has been compared to a vampire enough times in the past, ISTM he'd be a perfect Frank N Furter :-)
