This round should go much quicker.  There are half as many songs, and you've already read them.  You should still read them back-to-back, though, and please make sure you've already placed your "regular" vote (the fives or whatever).  I'm setting the round 2 deadline for noon Wednesday; most of the votes were in at that time last week even though the round was twice as long.  If you think you need more time, feel free to pm me and we'll work it out.  I've also included the songs that didn't make it to this round below for convenience if you still think you haven't voted or wanted to leave a comment or something.  Thank you.

Mike Armstrong here - voting for :

1 - Just found it quite humorous

3 - Tough choice, eked out the victory

5 - See above comment

7 - Gotta vote for myself :), looks like it's gonna be a tight race on this one

So that's a red light on being able to switch songs each round? I don't remember there being a final decision on what everyone was talking about earlier: 'And OPTION to change songs, but not a requirement.' That way people can change songs but are not required to do so each round, or ever for that matter. If I'm the only one who's interested in this, then one song all the way is fine, but what does everyone else think?... We should have settled this before round 1 ended. Even if some people want to go with this approach, so others might get very annoyed that we're changing the rules midway through the tournament.

I'm not surprised there's some confusion; sorry.  For the reasons you stated, we decided against the song switching.  One song all the way through.  I just read these eight back-to-back again and I'm glad I did; you pick up more from repeated readings and the ones I tend to vote for are the ones that retain more of their humor and interest over time.

the tiebreaker rules changed too originally i would've been in a tiebreaker now instead of out of the tournament... anyway:

Vote: 9 Phil Alexander

In Taj Mahal Tundoori, Phil exploits the original song's words and lines and twists them to his parody's advantage.

This is something I like to do in my own parodies, and Phil
did it at least as well - and at many points better - than I could have...so I've really got to give this one to Phil.

***********************

Vote: 4 Martha DTox

I'm a techie who worked in a software company during Y2K,
so this one hits close to home - and Martha captured the
spirit of those times in her parody very effectively.

***********************

Vote: 3  2nz

Still blown away by 2nz' mastery of Billy Joel and continual
variation in lyrics..."Nerd City" also hits close to home to an
admittedly geeky guy like me....but 2nz' parody's depth and
complexity carries the day vs. "Nerd City".

***********************

Vote: 2 Melhi

"American Pie" is an excellent vehicle for Mike's parody-biography of MJ - and if you look at the comment-section on "Molester Guy", you'll see the glowing review I gave this parody when it first posted.

Taking nothing away from Mike's achievement - and it is an achievement, my original comment's sentiment still stands - I am just so tickled and amused by Melhi's playfully creative use of internal rhyme and pacing on "Mimes" that I just gotta go with that one!

Thank you JD.  In a bit of mutual admiration, I'd like to say that I'd probably have voted for almost any other of Johnny's songs over Taj Mahal Tundoori, but the Ear Doctor one just doesn't do it for me...

Anyway more votes from the Baggins jury:

9

...4&6 won out because I guess I'm a nerdy, techie type at heart; Melhi's "Mimes" pipped "Molester Guy" (and doesn't that sound like it's going to be a Sk8er Boi parody?) on originality.

Hell, there weren't any bad (or even mediocre) parodies in the first round, so they can't really be separated on quality: it's more what has that certain appeal.

1 - Johnny's off-the-wall take on witch-doctor beat out Phil's clever use of his original song. Maybe Phil's is better in performance, but Johnny's looks funnier on paper.

4 - Techies and armaggeddon beat out monopoly references for me.

6 - Dang it, man. Your songs just more fun than mine  8)

2 - While I recognize the skillz of team 'strong' in their little number, Melhi's came together better as a whole for me.

Well our deadline has come and gone and we still have a few stragglers and no songs have advanced yet.  Will Jack, Joelle, Mike Florio, and neminem please do your voting ASAP?  Everyone is waiting on you guys.  Thank you.

Oh crap... I both forgot that I was supposed to be continuing to vote, and also have had like no time. And I only have time now by a complete fluke. I will take advantage of that fluke and go vote. Sorry :-[.

If me calculating is correct, we've got two winners and two pairs in a dead, 7-to-7 heat with each other. Come on, ya'll. C4P has worked so very hard and explained things when they needed explainin' and all that. Don't make me come to your house with some byatch (because the server, as I've seen, transforms the regular word into 'pregnant dog') slaps in my back pocket. Don't make me...

I wonder if using "heat" and "pregnant dog" in the same post was intentional...or maybe just a spellchecker malfunction?  Something for Colin Powell's kid to investigate next...

I apologize for the voting delay.  Below is the IQ test I plan to give to prospective participants before they'll be allowed to enter if I ever do this again:

1.  If you are eliminated in the first round, which rounds are you NOT voting in?

a  All of them
b  None of them
c  What the hell are you talking about?  If I'm eliminated in the first round, I AM SO OUT OF HERE
d  What's a round?

Seriously, I've figured out that I need to secure this commitment individually ahead of time.  Live and learn.  Meanwhile I've asked bracket 2 voters to come help us out as guest voters in this bracket so hopefully we'll have this round finished today.  Thank you for your patience.

Claude, I’ll throw in my four cents if you need it. I’m tending towards those that took more work over funny. I know I don’t really belong in this thread, but you asked.

1. Johnnie, though I hate voting against anything Phil does.

2. Martha, because of the insight and effort.

6. Earl, because I’m a nerd.

7. Mike. Hate voting against Mehli, too, but what an effort.

Thank you very much Rick.  Now we just need two more voters and we can move on to the next round.  Any two voters, either the ones from this bracket who haven't voted yet or from the other bracket, the next two votes will count.

Technically even though Watt and I are in the same group and we're in both brackets and I've already voted in round 2 already, do you want me to find him and ask him to vote in round 2 as a fix-it vote?

If you don’t have enough votes yet, please count the following choices from another bracket #2 guy:

9      Taj Mahal Tundoori - Two very creative parodies with clever endings.  Phil’s parody struck me as slightly more humorous.

4      Y2k and all That – Free Parking’s position as one of the top 30 amiright parodies of all time is well deserved and speaks for itself.  But I just preferred the way Martha developed the plot with humor and clever rhyming.

6      Nerd City – I went back and forth between these two parodies.  Breaking the Seams might be the best amiright obesity parody with a lot of funny lines and strong rhyming, but Earl also had a lot of funny lines and, I think, a little bit better ending.

7      Molester Guy – Mimes is very effective at recreating the mood of the original with a more humorous adversary. But I’m picking the Armstrong parody because I find it timely and  funny, and, even though a lot of work went into it, it reads very naturally.

Thank you, John.  And just for the record 2 of our 3 missing voters actually did vote; just in the wrong bracket.  Clearly it was just a case of confusion so please don't hold the delay against them.  They may yet vote in the correct bracket but meanwhile we do have our final decisions in for this round:  #1, 5, 6, and 7 advance.  I'm putting the voting thread up now and just to clarify there will be one more Bracket 1 round after that and then the final vote between the winners of the two Brackets which everyone (in each bracket) votes in.   The plan is to be done by this time next week so we should get 2 or 3 days for each vote.  Thanks everyone especially John and Rick who helped us out here.

Thank you for the votes but unfortunately this tournament has been over for a little while.  If you're interested there are a couple other contests going on now though.  Ethan's ABC tournament is currently accepting entries of songs beginning with the letter "C".  Thanks again; better late than never.
