Only the people in this bracket should vote. Do so by reading both songs in each pair carefully, back to back. As you read, be sure and fill out the regular voting form too, even if you know you've already voted (just in case). Half of the songs won't make it past this round so it's important they pick up the regular votes. It only works if everyone does it. Also, if your computer is set to not allow cookies, your votes apparently won't register so if you like receiving votes make sure you are giving them too.
You have until next Saturday to make your decisions; you may even want to just do a couple pairs a day. Post a message to this thread with the numbers of the songs you liked best from each pair at the top. Feel free to add comments, disclaimers, or whatnot but put the numbers at the top. For example, if you just read the first two matchups and liked the bottom songs you'd put the numbers 16, 8 at the top. As you read the other matchups, simply modify your message to add your choices until you've done them all. You should vote on all matchups, even the one you're in, and feel free to vote for yourself because everyone else probably will do the same thing.

Hi Claude,
The link you included for my original song's lyrics ("Witch Doctor", original song for my parody "Ear Doctor") has some bogus characters in it and doesn't work.
Here is the correct lyrics link:
http://www.2famouslyrics.com/d/david-seville-and-the-chipmunks/witch-doctor.html
In spite of the blank space you see here between the "w" and the "itch" in my lyrics link, this link works OK when you click on it.
Thanks
Johnny D

I've decided of a few so far
I'm going with a #1 seed upset with #16 B. o connor over #1johnny D (i'm not going survivor see comments for my reasoning)
I'm voting for #7 mike armstrong over #10 joelle because joelle submitted a good song while mike armstrong submitted a brilliant one
I'm voting for phil over rice and watt (once again comments explain why)
I'm voting for myself over martha for obvious reasons
And i'm voting for melhi over mystery goat because although a song can be good without being funny, good songs that are funny are better
so far i have the 16th, 2nd, 9th, 7th, and 13th seeds advancing
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
I've read, and in some cases re-read, all of the Bracket One entries, and I've made sure that I have voted and commented on all of them. I'm not ready to make my final voting decisions for this round yet - I need to give it more thought.
To clarify - when I say I've voted on all of them, I mean that I have already voted on all of their regular parody-posting-pages in the Amiright parody database - not yet on their tournament entries, however... :)

That's OK, dude! See my comments, too, where I accept and respect your opinion.
However..... after re-reading your comment on "Ear Doctor" and reflecting on it some more..... it struck me as extremely interesting that you judged "Ear Doctor" based on "censorship" and "if it got airplay".
That's a fascinating rationale! I never write parodies for airplay...I write them purely to entertain visitors to Amiright, period!
Ethan, you appear to have declared that your judgement-criteria for everybody's entries in this Amiright Parody Tournament might in some cases be at least partially based on your judgement of their need for censorship for airplay.....
I am genuinely intrigued, Ethan - exactly how do "censorship" and "airplay" figure into all of this, when airplay is not the primary reason why most of us are here anyway, and when so many of us are fundamentally opposed to censorship?
Peace
Johnny D :) :) :)
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
In my opinion the primary goal of a song parody is to be heard... which is why having several syllables of a word chopped off (a merry and pippin specialty) doesn't seem right to me. And i'm not saying i didn't like your parody i'm sure it's fine for everyone you want to read it... but when you're dealing with 2 really well written songs then a minor problem like filling a parody of a chipmunks song with words widely considered inappropriate for children can be the difference between winning and losing... i'm sure most people will feel differently but this is my opinion
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
Disclaimer: I will try to be as honest as I can without going all Simon Cowell
1. 1 - While I love the ninja turtles, "Ear Doctor" was just freakin funny.
2. 8 - I'm sorry but I just got lost in both of these parodies.I chose Rice/Watt over Phil because I like Foreigner more than the Eagles. I know not a whole lot of thought process in my decision.
3. 5 - Even though I do like Gilligan's Island, I just don't find it as good as Free Parking.
4. 4 - Although it pained me to pass up a Star Trek song, I had to go with the one I thought was better, and the one I knew the original song to. Sorry dude. And Ethan please don't take this as revenge for not voting for my song, just in case that should happen.
5. 6 - This one was a really tough decision. I chose Earl's beacause I feel I can truly relate to it. Seriously it's scary.
6. 3 - 2nz's song was just funny. I wish I thought of it myself.
7. 7 - Not the most appropriate song in the world, but I think we can look past that.
8. 2 - At first I was going to vote for myself so I could at least have 1 vote, but this song is just too funny not to vote for. Now watch me loose by 1 vote. :-)
Oh and while I'm thinking of it. For future reference MysteryGoat is spelled as one word on purpose. Thank you. :)

I've read everything, listened to those with audio links or which I could lay my hands on in RL, and I rated everything. Gee whiz, some of these match-ups were dead-heats! More went into my decisions, but I'll cite what I liked most or what tugged the scarf over the line in the tightest match-up.

The rest of the votes will go here when I get a chance...
In the mean time, I'm voting for myself, for obvious reasons. 11
Starting in on the rest, 16, 8, 5, 4, 3 (this one was hard - its competitor had a much more original idea, but this was still overall a better parody), 10, 2. Though, in listening to My Immortal, it occured to me that someone should really write a LoTR parody of it ;-) (Elf-related, that is). If I was more of a LoTR-geek I would, but I'd probably get something horribly wrong.

I am going to apologise in advance, Claude . . .
This is my first time (would you believe it?) in these part of the boards and I was wondering if I could vote and if I was too late to vote.
There are some great parodies here - really good stuff.
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
Claude's not here right now, Bobby, but I think voting is restricted to the participants in the tournament.
You can still link to the parodies that have been entered and vote and comment though. The authors would appreciate that, though you votes and comments would not be directly affecting the tournament :)
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
1 Johnny D. Ear Doctor
Chipmunks vs Turtles? Great matchup! Liked them both, but this one was both buzzwordy and buzzworthy. Reminded me of an uncensored Mr. Magoo.
9 Phil Alexander Taj Mahal Tundoori
I usually pick the nerd parody (of course!) but instead, this one got me laughing right at the end, even though I'm not known for an eclectic palate or for that matter an eclectic anything.
5 Jeff Reuben Free Parking
Didn't get Jack's pacing at all. I always have trouble with ones where a song's words are overlaid on anothers, even if it's on the Dr. Demento show.
13 Ethan The Trek Of The Enterprise Fellas
While I like Y2K humor, Ethan was moving at warp 10.1 for most of his parody. Five paragraphs shorter and it would have been perfect, but even coasting on impulse power at the end got it there.
6 Earl S. Garber Nerd City
Yes, I know - my epidermis is showing. As a screenwriter
wannabe, I really liked Neminem's descriptive comments - added a lot to his parody.
3 2nz Breaking The Seams
Not busting out laughing, but it was better. I am reminded of the politically incorrect interpretation of WWJD....."What Would Jared Do."
7 Mike Armstrong Molester Guy
Hated the subject matter. Really did. Wanted to vote against it, but it was too well-written and it WAS funny.
2 Melhi Mimes
I just didn't get Mystery Goat's parody.
Earl S. Garber, aka Old Comedywriter
By the way, if you have comments on my parody, you can leave them here...that was only the second one I posted, and didn't know what to expect.
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
My votes: 1 (Johnny D) One of my favorites on this site! LMAO!
9 Phil Alexander (4.39) Just too funny!
5 Jeff Reuben (4.48) Interesting subject!
13 Ethan (3.98) Again, very funny!
11 neminem (4.08) Even as a poet myself, I stand in awe of how many rhyming words he found!
14 Mike Florio (3.91) Another funny one!
10 Joelle (4.38) (for obvious reasons)
15 MysteryGoat (3.85) It wasn't funny, but I voted because it was very heartfelt. I could imagine these lyrics being published.

No worries, Indy. I think I will do a bit of 'informal voting'. :)
'Ear Doctor' was a great parody. The original song involved a lot of made up words so made this, with an excellent sense of logic (difficulty of hearing) made this a great achievement.
'Free Parking' could have been a tricky parody (subject matter was a little too linear) but worked really well with the pacing of the original song. It is also one of my favourite Tom Petty tracks.
'Atomic No 5' by Mike Florio is a very clever chemistry lesson and deserves my vote because it is simply that - clever.
'Molestor Guy' was another tricky parody (not for the same reasons as above) but I thought it was well written and showed a good sense of satirical humour.

3 - #5 - Jeff Reuben.

5 - #6 - Earl S Garber (if only for the couplet "Well, I ain't got a girlfriend 'cept the one in the drawer/But isn't that what centerfolds are for")
6 - #3 - 2nz
7 - #7 - Mike Armstrong
8 - #2 - Melhi

have we figured out a tiebreaker yet... some of these matchups seem pretty close and a tie seems quite possible
Subject: Tiebreaker proposal
Proposal to break a tie:
If two contestants in a given round split the 16 votes 8-to-8, then they should each post a link to another one of their parodies - different from their "primary tournament parody" - and let the other 14 people vote on the basis of that new match-up.
If another tie results, the process is repeated, until a winner emerges.

I think my proposal is in keeping with the spirit of Claude's tournament: to give all of the tournament participants ample opportunity to showcase their own parody catalogs to as wide an audience as possible.
That's why all of us who entered this tournament are winners! Just by entering, all 16 of our names and parody catalogs are being widely publicized - and that's good for everybody!

Funny, I was just thinking about this today. I think it's a great idea and if there's a tie that's what we'll do. My other plan was to give anyone from the other bracket 24 hours to vote and break the tie that way but I like the idea of bringing in another song; in fact I'm starting to think we should've allowed a different song in each round but I'm hesitant to change it at this point. Thanks guys.

Hey Claude, how about you use this bracket as a crash-test dummy to iron out the kinks, so that bracket 2 will have a more smooth time? :) This was a great idea though, lots of good fun.
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
Hi Claude,
I'm in favor of allowing the entrants the option - not as a requirement, but only the option - to change their song in every round!
Even starting right now, with the soon-to-be-decided second round of Bracket One!
The benefit of doing this would be that pre-formed opinions about a song in a previous round might not necessarily be able to bias the voting in subsequent rounds, if a given parody-entry is changed from one round to the next.
If entrant A secretly decides they don't like entrant B's "song C", period, and will always vote against it no matter what other song it's matched-up against, then if entrant B happens to change from "song C" to "song D" in the next round, that would refresh the game's dynamics!

Actually, I'm sorta looking at the whole tournament as a crash-test dummy (particularly the voting part) to see if some sort of monthly contest would be feasible. I mentioned it somewhere before but it got buried quick. I do think I set the voting deadline too far away for round one so I plan to shorten it a bit, and of course subsequent round voting should go much more quickly since there'll be fewer each round and everyone will already be familiar with the songs. This is a good time to remind everyone, though, that even if you're eliminated this round you must vote in every round. Also, you should read both songs again back to back even if you think you already know which one you like better. Thanks for the input Rice and you guys keep those suggestions coming.

I do agree; the only reason I hesitate to change it is that we decided on the format ahead of time and it may irritate people if we change the rules after we've begun. If a few more people really like the idea of a different song each round and no one speaks against it we can change it but they'd have to speak up in the next few days. A different song each round would of course bring more benefits to those advancing but for those who don't it may seem like more work since everyone's kind of setting an etiquette standard with the comments as they vote (which I think is fantastic, by the way--I imagine people are pretty happy so far even if they're not leading in the votes). Thanks Johnny.
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
Let me use a couple analogies here.
So if we change the song for every round, that would sort of defeat the purpose of bracket-style tournament play since it's not like the same team advancing through to earn the title of "best song" (at least in this contest).
But if you did change the song, that would be like a coach changing his team's strategy for every round.
Tough call :) I'm gonna just go with the flow.

Well, that's a good point. Changing songs also kinda takes the focus off the song and onto the artist, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but could make it more difficult for people to avoid taking the voting too personally. We'll just see if anyone else has any thoughts.

This proposed rule-change does not hurt anybody as far as I can see.
Nobody is forced to change a song if they don't want to.
And we've all been reading and writing parodies long enough that the extra effort, if any, to read and think about a new song should not be overly burdensome to conscientious and intelligent writers like all of us !!
I agree it may "seem" like more work, but it really isn't.
Again, no one will be forced to change their song.
And we're all smart enough and literate enough to be able to read and think about a new song.
Let's go for it! It'll make the game more exciting and fun!

Thanks, Paul - I did not intend to plagiarize your plan - in fact, my idea would allow people to either keep or change their parody in each round - whatever they personally choose to do is OK - keep or change, keep or change - freedom of choice!
And Claude - speaking for myself, I do not weigh the personalities of the parody artists at all as I develop my voting decisions, only their parody-writing ..... you'll see, when I cast my votes!
..... I'm totally confident that no one in Bracket One has self-esteem so low that they feel the need to vote somebody else's parody down out of some kind of personal spite or revenge or any other such stupid and immature motive.
And after seeing the excellent quality of all the entries in Bracket One, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that everybody in Bracket One has both the intelligence and the literacy to be able to smoothly consider new parodies from round to round...enjoying the variety along the way!
And we'll all have the option of publicizing more parodies from our respective catalogs, too! Everybody WINS !!

Johnny D, Of course not, never thought you did. As I recall the initial planning stages of the contest there were all sorts of criteria/plans/adjustments/comments/second-thoughts/retractions/contractions/sub
tractions/abstractions and all sorts of other stuff being floated all about and around. In fact my earlier remark here about your additonal thoughts was truly meant; you fleshed out the thoughts I had in a very cogent and logical manner and had some intriguing additional ones as well.

Thanks, Paul - I did not intend to plagiarize your plan - in fact, my idea would allow people to either keep or change their parody in each round - whatever they personally choose to do is OK - keep or change, keep or change - freedom of choice!

I left comments and votes on the parodies themselves, here's my votes for the contest:
16: Britney (two very good songs, one of the toughest decisions)
8: Rice Cube/Watt Daddy
5: Jeff Reuben
4: Martha
11: Neminem
14: Mike Florio (the toughest decision, in my opinion. I loved both songs)
7: Mike Armstrong
2: Melhi

Proposal to break a tie:
If two contestants in a given round split the 16 votes 8-to-8, then they should each post a link to another one of their parodies - different from their "primary tournament parody" - and let the other 14 people vote on the basis of that new match-up.
If another tie results, the process is repeated, until a winner emerges.

Personaly I love the idea. In fact I love it so much I beg for a tie between me and Mehli. (he says after last chance desperation ;D)
By the way, being able to change the song after each round may not be such a bad idea. Actually i'm having second thoughts on my current song choice right now, it'd be great to be able to change it in later rounds.
Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
1. 16 - (Second toughest decision) I love JD's, but I was a turtles fan before I knew how to write all 26 letters and have been ever since.
2. 8 - Phil's song was a little better suited to the song chosen, but I also agree with the comments behind the choice that Phil made for this decision.
3. 5 - pacing decided this one, because both were about popular icons and both parodies were written well. Their simplicity made them enjoyable.
4. 4 - Ethan's had many good lines, but Martha's came together better as a whole.
5. 11 - (toughest decision) I'm a geek who who is currently going to college. I ended up using the same approach that Melhi used.
6. 3 - Mike's parody had a better gimmick than mine when I first read through it, so I read through it the next day or two to see if the gimmick would stay strong after I knew it was coming. I think longevity and me being a little biased towards my own parody were the deciding factors here.
7. 10 - While the sheer length of 'Molester Guy' and it's spot on pacing cannot be ignored, 'ACT' just made me smile more for what it was.
8. 2 - Apples and oranges here. I just like the way the apple tastes a bit more. Took me 3 days of thinking to decide that, though.

Are you one of the people in the bracket, just using a different name or something? Because if so you should let them know that, and if not you should really read the rules before jumping into something.

Ah, ok. Never mind, then. But yeah, I was also hoping that it didn't count... it sucks how many people say mine was a really difficult choice, but they went with my competitor's :-/.

Ya, the other half of Mike Armstrong's at basic training, so I guess I'll have to suffice. Sorry for not mentioning that I was Mike Armstrong, brain fart.

Vote: 16 B.O'Connor
I am very impressed by B.O'Connor's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" parody.
I went so far as to get myself a sample of The Beastie Boy's "Intergalactic" rap,
and listen to it enough to get a sense of what B.O'Connor did.
B.O'Connor accomplished quite a feat of parody writing there - the lines
are very long and intricate, and - since it's rap - the pacing needs to be
conversational and fluid - and B.O'Connor achieved all of the above.
My "Ear Doctor" parody, so I'm told, is very humorous and entertaining - but I don't think it's as impressive and challenging a parody as is B.O'Connor's take on "Intergalactic" - so I'm breaking with tradition here and voting for my opponent. Well done, B.O'Connor.
*****************************************************
Vote: 8 Rice/Watt
"Cross Product" is, quite simply, a tour-de-force.
*****************************************************
Vote: 5 Jeff Reuben
Even though Jack did a cool thing here by taking a well-known TV sitcom theme song and fitting it into the music of a song that made a splash on MTV with it's computer-animated video some years back - a neat idea humorously executed - I've got to give this one to Jeff, since "Free Parking" is also humorously crafted, with its clever Monopoly motif, and its pacing is superior to that of Jack's parody.
*****************************************************
Vote: 13 Ethan Mawyer
The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald is challenging to parody, and Ethan
did a brilliantly witty job of it with his Star Trek motif...Ethan made
the extreme length of the original song work to his humorous advantage, too.
*****************************************************
Vote: 11 neminem
"Loud Vibrations" is not only a very well-paced and well-crafted parody, but
it describes a situation that just about every reader can relate to, in one way
or another. And I've written my own parody of "Good Vibrations", so I know
what neminem had to go through to produce this excellent parody.
*****************************************************
Vote: 3 2nz
2nz whipped Billy Joel into submission on this one - with clever original lines
that keep changing verse-by-verse and hold the reader's attention - while the
reader chuckles all the way through.
*****************************************************
Vote: 10 Joelle
I've written two parodies of "Let It Be", so I can easily appreciate
the creativity and cleverness of Joelle's parody of that same tune, using
an academic motif with clever use of individual letter-sounds to enhance
rhyme and pacing.
*****************************************************
Vote: 2 Melhi
Very clever internal rhyme and excellent pacing.

(For an explanation of why I'm voting in this bracket, see the "Tournament Stuff" thread)
1, 9, 5, 4, 6, 14, 7, 2
Almost all were very tough choices and usually came down to which made me laugh more since that's the number one thing I look for in a parody. Well done everyone.

Thank YOU, Just_Brit ... I must admit that I am not an avid fan of rap music - could have something to do with my age, I guess!
Anyway, your parody of "Intergalactic" gave me the perfect opportunity to get off my 45-year-old-butt and finally give rap a respectful listening.
I have a sister-in-law who loves The Beastie Boys - for Christmas, I got her a compilation CD set of The Beastie Boys called "The Sounds Of Science" - so I'm not a total stranger to the guys.
Rap is tough stuff to parody! It's essentially poetry declaimed explosively to a beat - like I said, tough stuff to parody - that's why I'm so impressed by your "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"! You NAILED it!
Also, I really like the Turtles, too - they're weird, funny, mutant, bizarre, friendly, good-natured, and martial artists, too - all adjectives that I would like to think also describe me - I'm a computer geek who has a 1st degree black belt in shotokan and who dropped-out of the great temple of mutant nerddom, M.I.T., more than 25 years ago.
So be assured, my vote for your parody was well-thought-out and very carefully considered... I took almost a whole week to cast this vote... you deserve it.
Congratulations, good luck, and God bless you.
Johnny D :) ;) ;D

So far I have the #2, #5, #4, and #7 seeds advancing. We still need Jack Wilson's vote and he should have it in by 8 PM if possible. Also, Ethan, neminem, and 2nz still have 2-3 matches to vote on. Please do so even if the match is already settled. Thank you.

Subject: Re: Tournament Voting Thread (Bracket One)
So there we have it. According to what I have, the advancing songs are--1, 9, 5, 4, 6, 3, 7, 2. Congratulations and all that. I'll post a second round voting thread later today.
Since Rice and Watt did not advance, and they already expressed interest, they are free to enter the second bracket now. That leaves one spot open, and anyone who did not advance may claim it; first come first served. If you do so, you will be voting in every round in both brackets. Also, if there's a chance you did not give regular votes to all these songs, please please make sure you do so soon; every song should have at least seventeen votes and right now I don't think they do. Thank you.

Good; that's how it's supposed to work. Kind of like a "competitive co-op". The contest makes it fun but the real reason to do it is the agreement to read each other's stuff.

Hey i asked a lot earlier if i could get into the second bracket seeing as how it looked like i wasn't going to get through. And wouldn't you know it, i didn't. Is the possibility still open to get in? ;D

Crap! I'm sorry; I coulda sworn you were talking about the different song for each round idea. Believe me, if I thought I had two already lined up I would not have offered the other spot. Oh well. This has gone over well enough I guarantee there will be others of some sort. Thanks for your understanding.

I'm afraid a 3rd bracket seems pretty unlikely at this point; we've had almost no interest for quite awhile outside our existing 30 participants. As I told MG though, the response to this has been good enough that future contests similar to this seem pretty certain.
