Subject: Not sure if anyone noticed yet, news story feature
I've added a new feature to the news stories I post, where it will allow parody authors to leave links to their parodies on the page.
I'm going to add a link to the performer pages for the news stories about various performers, hence the reason I don't want that to be a reason for adding a parody.
I'm still not sure if the comment field is really needed, and have to still work on the layout a bit, but it's basically fully functional. Give it a whirl.

Cool feature, Chucky. Thanks again for your hospitality.
I've got a parody about Britney Spears' latest exploits called "Boost My Ratings Again" (http://www.amiright.com/parody/2000s/britneyspears176.shtml) and I figured it would be a good candidate for the new feature, but I see that the news-link guidelines expressly forbid linking to parodies of any song by the newsmaking artist. That disqualifies me, since mine a parody of "Oops!... I Did It Again."
I'm not complaining - rules is rules - but I'm just curious about your reasoning for this. In my opinion, the best vehicle for parodying a musician's behavior is a parody of that musician's own material. For example, if/when I do a parody about the Michael Jackson scandal, it will be a parody of a Michael Jackson song (rather than a song by, say, Molly Hatchet or Englebert Humperdinck). Dig?

you sure about this rule? i had a parody up yesterday about the same subject using the same song, as did tim hall, yet someone put up my parody on the link to the story and unless it just got removed its still there. Maybe the rules mean that simply being a parody of a song by the artist the article is about isn't enough to get put up as a related parody because there would be too many of those.

And I quote:
"If the newstory is about a performer, parodies of songs that performer has done are not acceptable. (There will be a link for all parodies of that performer added at some point in the near future). A parody about the performer themself (ie. a parody making fun of Britney Spears, that isn't based on a Britney Spears song) is considered acceptable."

the reason why it's not allowed is in the rule itself. I'm going to add something so I can have one link cover all Britney Spears songs, since an article about Britney Spears would probably have 200 related parodies. If they all got listed, what a waste of effort for someone to skim them

I figured as much. I agree that it would make no sense to link all the "Oops, I Farted Again"s to a story about Britney Spears' marriage. But if the intent is to link to parodies specifically about the news event at hand, I think it's a shame NOT to include parodies of the artist's own stuff - it automatically disqualifies some of the most pertinent parodies. Maybe the decision could be made based on relevance rather than on who did the original.
But, you know what, I'm not emotionally invested in the decision. I'm fine with whatever. I just think it's great, Chuck, that you not only provide an island for us misfit parodists, but that you keep adding amenities AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.
Spaff out.

yeah, well this feature unfortunately took a decent amount of time to implement, and it's largely ignored at the moment I think. I spent an hour or so tonight adding the performer link on the past week's worth of news items, future news items will have 'em.
I don't know what the fine line for relevence should be if I say, yes you can repost your Britney Spears parody on a Britney story. If you can think of a way to phrase a rule that doesn't encourage someone posting all their Britney parodies every time a news item is posted, I'm happy to change the rule.
I certainly think for instance (and I keep using Britney 'cause she's in the news a lot lately), that if Britney says something about Iraq, and you wrote an Iraq parody to the tune of a Britney Spears song, it's ok to ignore the rule I posted.
Even if the feature isn't a huge smash, I plan on using the scripts I wrote for it, for a similar section, where people can suggest a topic, and then people can list parodies that are related. I think it may be more interesting than this one has been so far.

How's this?:
Suggest a parody on the website that is related to this news item. If the news item is about a performer, a parody of a song by that performer is not acceptable (for example, if the news item is about Britney Spears' annulment, please do not suggest a parody of "Baby One More Time") unless the parody content specifically relates to the news item.

Or this:
Suggest a related Amiright parody. Please note: The content of suggested parodies must be directly related to the content of the news item. Example: For a news item about Britney's annulment, suggest only parodies written about Britney's annulment.

I went with Spaff's description, though both seemed ok. I keep forgetting to add the links to the perfomers as it is
