Subject: One Hit Wonders.... according to VH1 of course!
Written By: Tam on 01/28/07 at 12:11 am

To be clear, I am aware that VH1 gathers their information from US Charts and Top 10.
But this is seriously ridiculous!
For me - I will BOLD the ones that I know for a fact are not One Hit Wonders.
Any thoughts?

What always makes me laugh is that VH-1 bases their lists on US Top 40 hits, and some of these didn't even reach the US Top 40.  lol

Men Without Hats, A-ha, Falco, Eddy Grant, Rockwell, Stacey Q, Aqua and Spandau Ballet all had more than one Top 40 hit in America

Based on Canada, UK and International charts, almost all of these artists disqualify from the One Hit Wonder status

Yeah, some bands may only have one commonly identifyable song compared to their others, that doesn't make them a "one hit wonder" in the literal sense. Or, some artists were big with their respective fanbase, but maybe only crossed over to the Top 40 occasionally (i.e. "Round and Round" from Ratt).

I think they stretch it to have more of a show (after all, not too many people would watch it if it were just "The Macarena" and "Afternoon Delight"). ;D

On the plus side, it's about as close as they get to playing music now. Although I just realized they've repeated this show for a long time. It even has the previous VH1 logo branded onto the graphics, lol (the "VH" inside the "1" with a circle and "Music First" underneath it).

67. "Epic" by Faith No More (1999)
LOL:

These songs of theirs were big:
"From Out Of Nowhere"
"Falling To Pieces"
"Midlife Crisis"
"A Small Victory"
"Easy" (Lionel Richie Cover)
"Evidence"
"Ashes To Ashes" (Not a Bowie Cover)

& Epic popped out in 1989 (or was that a typo on your behalf?  ???)

58. "What Is Love?" by Haddaway (1993)

Their other big hit was "Life"

Maybe it's based off of very limited charts, or an online poll?

100. "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas (1974)

I put this thread in here because it spans decades and so have whistledog's approval so it shouldn't need to be moved anywhere!

In the UK Carl Douglas had to more hits Dance The Kung Fu in November 1974 and Run Back in December 1977. For me not a one hit wonder.

DEVO had a few hits. Of course, none were as popular as "Whip It", but they did chart.

1990 - "Post Post-Modern Man" (US Modern Rock #7, US Dance #26)

Charts higher than "Whip It", but I think it's in a category with less songs... XD I think it's funny that this song charted so high, and not many people know it...

That's coz it's on the rock chart.  People who listen to Rock radio would know it, but random listeners of mainstream radio wouldn't have a clue :D

Geez, according to wikipedia, Devo only had just the 1 Top 40 in America with "Whip It", and no Top 40s in the UK :o

They hit the Top 20 twice in Canada with "Whip It" and "Working in A Coalmine" (Both went Top 20)

Vanilla Ice had another Hot 100 hit (unfortunately), it was a top 5 I believe. Baha Men also had another song chart somewhere on the hot 100 back in 2002. "Lollipop (Candyman)" was also a hit for Aqua, it was definitely top 40 but not top 20.

Yeah, Vanilla's cover of "Play That Funky Music" was big.  That Baha Men song was a cover of the 80s hit "Best Years of Our Lives" and if I remember, appeared on the Shrek soundtrack

Aqua also had a big hit with "Dr Jones".  I remember that song got played to death on the radio

Yes, there's a multitude of names there that don't qualify for that dubious honour over in Britain...

I won't list them all, but possibly the biggest disparity of all has to be Gary Glitter...

He's only basically known for 'Rock & Roll' in the US (where I believe it was used as a sport anthem), but he had an enviable run of British hits including three #1's and four #2's before his huge fall from grace several years ago...

Spandau Ballet should NOT be on that list...they had more than one hit in the US. I know "Gold."

Falco...I know "Rock Me Amadeus" was his biggest hit (esp. in the US)...but what about "Vienna Calling"? I know it was on the U.S. charts. And he also did the original version of "Der Kommissar" way back in 1982 (even though it didn't do well overseas).

Where's Times Two "Strange But True" and Jennifer Paige "Crush"  :D 8)

Several from the list had two or three hits

If it's just bands only known for one song, though had other hits, they might as well put Winger since most people only remember "Seventeen" or Spice Girls "Wannabe"  ::)

Men Without Hats, I know they also had "Pop Goes The World" and Twisted Sister also had a hit with "I Wanna Rock"

Quiet Riot had about three hits: "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Mama Weer All Crayzee Now", and "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)"

I think the criteria they were using to determine the 1-hit Wonders had to do with how high any subsequent singles charted.  If follow-up singles didn't chart high enough to be called a "hit", then that was that.  It's logical in its own twisted way.  If you released 10 singles, but only one was a hit.....you're a one-hit wonder.  The term has nothing to do with how many singles you release, just where they end up on the charts.

That doesn't mean it's a hit.  I'm sure people bought Kevin Federline's album, but that didn't make a hit album.

Yes, by definition...

Britain used to operate (I'm not sure if it still does) a Top 200...most of which was used by 'the industry', but the public only ever got to see the Top 75...

And yet, if something crawled in for one week only at #75 (and there's been plenty!), then that was still classified as a 'hit'...

Okay, not a massive hit I'll grant you, but it still fits the criteria, pedantic or not!

I'm sure the same system operates the whole world over...

As long as a song hits the charts, it is considered a hit, because people bought the song to make it a success (big or small).  This means the artists/producers make money, and you can't make money off something that is not successful

Spice Girls a one hit wonder!, were you sleeping under a rock for most of the 90's??

I meant to say that there's bands that had several hits, but most people only remember one song in retrospect

But the Spice Girls didn't just have one song everyone knows and then a bunch of other songs people can't remember.  The follow-up singles to Wannabe were just as big.

During the late 90s the Spcie Girls were then popular worldwide, and I find hard to believe that they are just a One Hit Wonder in the USA.

They have had three high charting hits, as far as I know in the US.

Only familiar with "Wannabe", though I know they were overexposed  :P

Then again, I was listening to other artists when they were popular

Aside from "Wannabe", the only other songs of theirs I know of are "Say You'll Be There", "2 Become 1", and "Viva Forever."

What do you think a one-hit wonder is, pray tell?  She's had more than one hit, dear.  Therefore, she is neither a one-hit artist or a one-hit wonder.

The term One Hit Artist still doesn't make any sense.  If an artist has all kinds of hits, shouldn't they be remembered for all of them?

LOL:

These songs of theirs were big:
"From Out Of Nowhere"
"Falling To Pieces"
"Midlife Crisis"
"A Small Victory"
"Easy" (Lionel Richie Cover)
"Evidence"
"Ashes To Ashes" (Not a Bowie Cover)

& Epic popped out in 1989 (or was that a typo on your behalf?  ???)
"Faith No More" had a hit in 1997 with "Last Cup of Sorrow" I thought. MTV2 used to play the music video all the time for "Last Cup of Sorrow" if I remember right. "Last Cup Of Sorrow" was off FNM"s 1997 album called "Album Of the Year".

To be clear, I am aware that VH1 gathers their information from US Charts and Top 10.
But this is seriously ridiculous!
For me - I will BOLD the ones that I know for a fact are not One Hit Wonders.
Any thoughts?

65. "In My House" by The Mary Jane Girls (1985)

39. "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve (1998)

33. Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn (1979)

28. "It Takes Two" by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock (1988)

Number 65 "Mary Jane Girls" are not one-hit wonders they had a hit with "All Night Long" in 1983 I think.
Number 39: "The Verve" wasn;t Lucky Man" a hit for the Verve in the US? I  lstill dig(Verve's sound)after all these years.
Number 33: "Cheryl Lynn" had a hit with "Encore" in the 80's I thought.
Number 28: Rob Base & DJ Ez-Rock had a hit with "Joy and Pain" in 1988 I thought.

I get what mr crowly is saying.

It's a bit like the complaint made earlier on in this thread.  In that some artists really only have one hit.  Other chart more than once but seem to only be known for one song and that makes some people call them One Hit Wonders when in reality they are not.

All these songs are one hit wonders in the US. You cant make them more than what they are.
No they weren't if you go back and read through all of this thread you will see plenty of evidence to prove otherwise.

One thing is for sure, Vanilla Ice certainly was no one hit wonder in Canada.  A one album wonder maybe, but he had 3 Top 10s over here ...

1990 - Ice Ice Baby
1990 - Play That Funky Music
1991 - I Love You

I had an argument with a woman who is an owner of a music bar so she thinks she knows it all. She argued that the Guess Who were a one hit wonder and the only thing they were ever known for was 'American Woman'  ::)

...which is a load of poppykock; they had more than one hit song...such as "No Time." I believe they had other well known songs too, if I'm not mistaken.

LOL and this woman owns a music bar?  I think she needs to know more about music if she is going to run a music bar ::)

The Guess Who had a total of 33 hits, 19 of which made the US chart
