Here...
DLR era is best, IMO, but 5150 is good enough...
Fave VH album: Fair Warning...
Worst: VH3, e-w-w-w-w...
I haven't seen them live since the 5150 Tour, Halloween night, '86...

I like lots of Van Halen songs, but out of both singers, there are only two that stand out as all-time favourites for me ...
Van Halen - Jump
Van Hagar - Finish What Ya Started
Out of the Gary Cherrone era, zero songs ;D

IMO, Sammy Hagar is the better overall singer, but David Lee Roth is the better Van Halen singer.
Even though he didn't do any full blown ballads (although he did do sorta synthpoppy songs like "I'll Wait", or arena rock like "Jump" and the "Pretty Woman" cover), DLR had more classics with the band than Sammy did.

I'm not a fan of Van Hagar....I prefer the lineup with Diamond Dave.

Van Halen with DLR - Raw
Van Halen with Sammy Hagar - Lush sounds
Van Halen with Gary Cherrone - Meh. I prefer the first two versions.

Van Halen w/David Lee Roth was the best combination for that band IMO
5150 is a good album with several solid songs on it but DLR was so flamboyant, and dramatic during his time with VH and the songs he performed define VH for me.
I saw Sammy Hagar with his own band *The Waboritas* at The Warfield Theatre in San Francisco about 5 years ago and that was one of the best indoor concerts I've been to. They bloody rocked the place! so with his own group and their own songs, Sammy makes some damn good music and puts on a great show.
I never got to see DLR but I did get to see Gary Cherrone with VH in Concord Ca. at the Pavillion and the band was good, Eddie kicked ass (of course) and Gary was quite unnoticed by me, but I do have a tee shirt from that show and his pic is on it with the rest of VH.

Van Halen: "Jump", "Hot For Teacher", "You Really Got Me", "Dance The Night Away"
Van Hagar: "Best of Both Worlds", "Right Now"

Best Van Halen: Van Halen (1978) & 1984 (1984)
Best Van Hagar: 5150 (1986)
Worst Van Halen: Van Halen 3 (1997?) - I'm sure most would agree
I liked the earlier works with David Lee Roth better, even though Hagar was good, and 5150 was a classic.

They went to the "Extreme" on that album, and it was a disaster
What's funny, is that the keyboardist on that album was Mike Post, who also co-produced it. Post is best known for scoring the themes to countless TV shows, and boy, if that doesn't scream Rock, nothing does ;D
