They used to have "The Victorian Village" in Boston at Jordan Marsh Co. and it was great, but then it was bought out by Macys and they got rid of it.  The city moved it to the City Hall Plaza.  Now Macys has bought Filenes and they are ending Filenes Basement.  I don't do Macys  >:(

i'm surprised I didn't see the Eastgate Consumer Mall at Shadeland Avenue. It's just about had it. The Eastgate theater and Cub Foods near there are already closed. The Washington Squarel in Indy is also close to biting it. But the Glendale Mall went through a renovation project after its initial closing and  added a new library. It's still popular among high schoolers and frugal people close by.
I do remember the Riverbend Mall in Rome, Georgia while visiting my dad's folks in Rome. It was ugly and cumbersome even before the floods in the Etowah River district. Not even the K-Mart across from the mall could save it. I like the Mount Berry Square better, but it doesn't have a lot of speciality stores.

Glendale mall? You must have one in your area...because I know there's a mall in Glendale, CA, known as the Glendale Galleria, which I went to with my family a lot when I was growing up. And as far as I know, it's still around.

Jitney-Jungle ("Jitney-Jungle Stores of America"), a Jackson-based grocery chain, is no more.

Jitney got its start in 1919, but declared bankruptcy in 1999.  And in 2000, Jitney was acquired by Jacksonville, Florida-based Winn-Dixie.

By 2002, Winn-Dixie forever eliminated the names Jitney-Jungle, Jitney Premier, Pump & Save, and Sack & Save.


All Jitney-Jungles were renamed Winn-Dixie
All Jitney Premiers were renamed Winn-Dixie Marketplace
All Pump & Saves (gas stations) were renamed Winn-Dixie Fuel Center or Save Rite Fuel Center
All Sack & Saves were renamed Save Rite


From 2002 to 2004, Winn-Dixie closed five stores in the Jackson area.

And in 2005, Winn-Dixie exited the Jackson area.  (Winn-Dixie closed or sold 326 stores, including the remaining 14 stores in the Jackson area.)

In the '80s and '90s, I was a frequent Jitney-Jungle shopper.  Nowadays, I almost always shop at a Wal-Mart Supercenter (a Wal-Mart that carries groceries as well as other merchandise); sometimes, I'll shop at a nearby Kroger.

We had two Pantry Pride supermarkets in our area, one in Tilton Plaza in Northfield, the other at Shore Mall in Egg Harbor Township...

Pleasantville's Acme Market is no more, it was an Aldi 'budget' food market for a while, now it's a charter school..

Absecon had a small A&P market downtown, that closed in the mid 70's.

The old(50's-60's)era Acme Market in Somers Point has been replaced with a modern Acme store...The old store was 50's architecture, with a high cathedral ceiling and an all-glass storefront.

Does anyone here remember the American Stores? I think they were in NJ and Pennsylvania...I think quite a few became Acme's.

Some trivia...A&P in North Jersey in New York is called Super Fresh in Philly, South Jersey, and Delaware.

There was a Two Guys where I grew up in New York ( on Long Island).

When they went out of business, my Dad went to the Toy Department and bought every piece of slot car track they had left in stock for little to nothing.

Pleasantville had an old Shop-Rite store that had a wooden floor, the store must have opened in the 1920's or 30's...the store closed its doors in 1969, when people started going to the newer Shop-Rite in Absecon....Both the Pleasantville and Absecon stores were owned by the Starn family, who operated them for Wakefern Foods, Shop-Rite's parent company. The Absecon store is open and has been modernized quite a few times, and now is operated by Village Supermarkets which runs it for Wakefern...

The original Two Guys name was "Two Guys of Harrison", their department store was in Harrison NJ in the old RCA factory complex. It in a old factory building and looked more like Costco's or BJ's only with less of a store look. You bought stuff right out of an open crate box or clothes off a rope strung between two building posts. Two Guys of Harrison opened on Sundays back in the 50's when it was against the Blue Laws to sell clothing and other stuff, this defiance is what made them popular and successful with the public, they came by the thousands to shop on Sundays for bargins out of a box and where fined big every Sunday until they were forced to close but made millions for their gimmic but sold out to some big retail company and changed it's name to only Two Guys and became the stores you have known. They always fought the Blue Laws in NJ and finally won their case in the late 1970's and the NJ courts ruled down the Blue Laws and Two Guys got to sell clothing on Sunday's and shortly after went out of business..."?", why because every retail store in Jersey openned up for business on Sunday and they couldn't compete with all the Malls...

I miss them for their sports and record department, I still have albums with Two Guys price stickers on them.

You bet I remember it. I used to go with my mom to the one in Woodbridge- we lived in south Staten Island and in the 70s it was the closest department-type store to our house.  I didn't know other stores existed here - we went to jersey for everything in Perth Amboy, Woodbridge, and Elizabeth.

Jamesway and Best are two stores that I really miss. 

I especially miss Jamesway around Christmas and Easter because my mom used to get all her decorations and easter candy there. 

I used to get all my star wars toys at Best... so weird... i can remember being there like it was yesterday... and it was more than 20 years ago.

Yep, those were the days when Philly had terrific department stores and they were worth going to.  The Enchanted Village at Lit's was always a stop during Christmas season every year, along with the light show at Wanamaker's and a ride on their monorail in the toy department.  It was part of growing up as a kid, you got to go see all of that.  Wanamaker's also had a neat train layout in the toy department.

I also remember that each of the elevators in those stores had people running them, calling out the floors.  Now you take the escalator and stare at the back of the person's head in front of you.

I remember too the Lit Brothers store here in South Philly at 23rd & Oregon.  It's where the ShopRite now sits. 

Kids today go to the mall, with all their stores and don't realize the history of the great stores we had, or the men who built them.

I remember Lit Brothers in Philadelphia because they had a walk-through Christmas Display with animated figures of Santa Claus and other Christmas stuff...

And Gimbel's is long gone too...both stores were really nice although a bit pricey.

Gimbel's actually had a television in the front window when network broadcasts started in Philly around 1947!

I ain't too familiar with Gimbels (it probably went out of business before I was even born; also, I'm on the other end of the U.S.)...but Lucy made reference to it in the "I Love Lucy" episode where she and Ethel bought the same dress (Ethel got hers at a different store).

Wow.  Now that you say it, sure, that does ring a bell.  Korvettes was good store.  And McRory's.  Brendan met Mr. T there?  What a weird thing.

Hi Unidyne, I see we're neighbors, or were at one time. You remember a lot about Two Guy's in Union and re-kindled a few of my memories, here's one that stands out "The Fonzie" from Happy Day's made a personal appearance one Sunday morning and about 5, 000 fans showed up to see the Fonz, after and hour of waiting he showed up on top of their front door canopy roof as Henry Winkler, he was not in his tv costume leather coat but in regular clothing. He stood on the roof top about 25 feet above the crowd and waved for about 5 minutes to the screaming fans and then split. Hundreds the younger girls were still waiting for the Fonz to to show up and didn't know it was him they were looking at on top of that roof...they were confused and very disappointed when they realized it was the Fonz and not some old man in a top coat waving on the roof...Yeah! I say that he "Jumped the Shark" with those fans. 

Another disappointing celebrity day at Two Guy's in Union was when they made a big deal that the Star Wars cast was going to be there, I tried to soften the reality of that happening to my sons who thought they were going to see the real Princess Leila and Darth Vader from the movie and I had to ease that disappointment before we got there. I was right, there was a about 5,000 fans that showed up to see some bad costumed actors playing the parts...what a rip off but that's sho' biz!

Can still remember the nice old lady in the fron of the store at her hot dog cart and the fabulous orange drink machine next to her. I remember about the year or so before it closed, every Saturday the store would have Rubik's cube contests....you were handed an unsolved Rubik's cube and had to solve it before everyone else you competed against did. I remember people whirling the cube around in every direction and hearing the crunching noise it made as you changed the position of the tiles. Always someone managed to get it in under 3 minutes.....around back they had the gardening center that was surrounded by chain link fence....Well after that Two Guys closed, it was vacant for about 3-4 years until Bradlees took over, and they were one of the first Bradlees to close in 2000. Now the mall is a Kohl's and Circuit City, and the forever ubiquitous Lowe's was built smack in the middle of the parking lot.

Tyler77, Lowes just opened a store in Union a few of weeks ago in the vancant Bradlees/ Two Guys store also. They totally demolished the old building and rebuilt to look like all their other Lowes stores. It's kicking the crap out of Home Depot too.

Never went to Robert Hall's but there was a Thom McAns also on Kennedy Boulevard in North Bergen that I remember going to way back when.   ::)

According to my boyfriend, we had a Gemco in Walnut Creek in the 60's-70's. (according to the website that Jack's referred us to, Gemco was a department store owned by Lucky) That Gemco is now a Target.

I definitely remember Caldor. Funky and cool in a way. Bought records, tapes, clothes for gym class, and a toilet seat we bought for my grandmother's birthday. I loved the way the stores looked..with those big old AC fans hanging from the ceiling. Good stuff.

I definitely remember Bradlee's! They were owned by Stop and Shop for a while , I believe, along with Medi-Mart who was bought by Walgreens in the mid 80s. For a while I think all three stores incorporated a version of the "traffic light" logo used by Stop and Shop. I was a kid in the 80s so I could be wrong, but that is what I seem to remember. Bradlee's was a good store..we weren't rich so we did a lot of back to school and Christmas shopping there! Last time I was in a Bradlee's was the store in Wouburn in 2000 before a Sox game and I bought my Ohioan stepson a Sox hat!

Remember Wards? They were awesome. I've only been to one in my life, and that was at good old Carolina Circle Mall. They were basically Sears, but cooler.

We used to go to Montgomery Wards all the time. In the 1990s, I tried to buy my first computer there. They sold me something they were out of.

Montgomery Wards was a household name I never thought we would lose - although I wasn't willing to support them. My grandma called them "Monkey Wards".

I remember going to a Ward's in Tucson in the 1970s and buying a boardgame called "Mousetrap" that is still around.

I remember shopping at that department store until maybe the mid-to-late 90's. Sometime shortly thereafter, that's probably when they went outta business.

I remember "Monkey Ward".  They had the reputation for being kind of poor quality but I got a console t.v. from them back in 1988. Since that time, it only needed 1 part replaced (and the repair guy had a hell of a time figuring out what part that was) and the orignal remote died. Otherwise, it still works great.

I remember "Two Guys".  It went out of business so they put in the Jamesway, that's now gone.  The K-Mart up the road has out lived them both.

Anyone from Canada will remember Simpson's Department Store, a retailer similar in that to US chain Macy's.  In the late 80s, all Simpson's Stores were bought out by the Hudson Bay Company, and are now known as The Bay

If you remember the 80s Children's series Today's Special, the setting of the store used was the Simpsons location on Yonge Street in Toronto.  It was also seen in the 1988 fim Short Circuit 2

I remember Wards. Ours shut down maybe 5 or 6 years ago, or possibly longer. They gutted it out recently and remade it into a Kohls Department store. It's funny how the lay out is very similiar to how the Wards was. I think I went their 2-3 times. I mainly remember that Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer was their Christmas mascot in their holiday ads.

London had a huge Simpson's Department Store in Piccadilly, in 1999 it became branch of the Waterstone's chain of bookshops.

When I was a kid, I LOVED the Montgomery Wards Catalogs. I would play this game, where I would take a catalog and a yellow legal pad and I would pretend that I was rich and could buy whatever I wanted. I would go from page 1 all the way to the back page and I would make lists/columns on this yellow legal pad, 'ordering' things. I was very precise about  it. I would have one column marked page #/ Item #/ Item Description/ color/ size/ quantity/ price each/ total.    I would go through the book and I would 'order' my casual clothes, my business wear, my evening wear, my 'husband's' clothing, 'my kids' clothing , ( I would always have a boy and a girl in my imagination), and I would even 'order' furniture for my 'house'. I could spend hours on the front porch doing that. And I'd have pages and pages of 'orders' on this yellow legal pad. It's funny because I still sorta like to do that, when I order something in reality. I love to fill out the forms :P I'm weird, I know.

There were no MW stores here in Milwaukee, Wi. If we were up in the Sheboygan area, we would stop at the one that was there. My mom worked at a Montgomery Ward catalog desk so we had MW merchandise all over the house.

mental ward, psycho ward, and michael wart. those were the big three. weirdly the beaver one, i think nobody ever did that -- maybe because nobody wanted to admit being familiar with leave it to beaver.

michael wart was the only one that really bothered me. mental ward was slightly annoying. psycho ward i thought kinda... rocked.

I always got teased with Leave It To Beaver references back then, cuz I had such buck teeth as a kid. I also got Angel Fruitcake, Angel Dusted or Angeldust a lot too.. (though the druggie sounding ones , they didn't come up with those til I was a teenager).

Man, our Wards was a HUGE store. Like a regular Department store, like Penneys. It had 3 floors even. It closed it's doors in the 90's though I think.  I never had anything against Wards.. though people did make fun of me in 8th grade cuz I didn't have Nike Tennis shoes, but had Ward's "Kicks". Those were the days... I can't believe I'm waxing nostalgic about Montgomery Ward.  ::)

well, actually we'll probably be waxing nostalgic for when we had an organized civilization and we weren't eating out of dumpsters and there was gas and it didn't get up to 145 degrees in the summer. but that's an issue for another thread.

Yes, "Best" was a great department store (at least from a kid's point of view). I just remember begging my mom to take us there whenever we were at the mall. Our Best has since departed (at least over 15 years ago!) and now has turned into a JCPenney satellite store for their Home Furnishings. When I go in there, I often envision it as Best, the way I remembered it - lol. I never knew it was formerly known as LaBelles. Funny thing!

It must be a May 21st connection. It's strange how on this board I've found the largest amount of people I've ever known who were born on my birthday. It must be why I was so drawn to ya'all.  ;D

Up in Mass. some people would have called you "Wad."  Not to poke fun, just the accent. 

I remember one of my English teachers rambling on about divorce,

Good old Bradlees. In the "Before the 70s" pic thread, there is potrait of me at the age of 6-that pic was taken at Bradlees.  ;D ;D

A-ha!  I knew that pic had to be a school photo or a dept. store photo!

Bradlees had the cornball "Mrs. B." with some commercial actor personifying the entire chain, this was especially big around the Holidays. 

If your parents bought your back-to-school clothes at Bradlees, you could only hope the other kids wouldn't notice!  Bradlees went under about the same time as Ames and Caldor, around the great 1990s Wal-Mart/Target expansion in New England states.

Ames was cheap, Bradlees was cheaper, Caldor was cheaper still!

The Two Guys my aunt used to take me two in the 70's was in Jersey City on Route 440. It was shaped like an L and has the supermarket and a little store across that had a liquor store and a car part shop.

THe problem with this store was a lot of shoplifting. The store was not kept up and I remember when they shut off the supermarket then the store died (late 70's or early 80's.)

The Two guys became a Bradlees with a Chinese restaurant buffet place and the supermarket became a Shop Rite. They all died by 2002.

The Two Guys building I t hink was built in 1968 and leveled abotu two years ago to become a Lowes. Part of the original building remains and is a PC Richard's appliance store (do folks remember Brick Church or Crazy Eddie's from the 70's.)

Further down the strip is the Hudson Mall which I rarely see more than 10 people in. IT is mostly occupied but could be a candidate for a dead mall someday. There is a cool site (maybe mentioned here ... I'm a first time poster sorry) called http://www.deadmalls.com Lots of cool facts about malls that have come and gone. If you are a Jerzee person you could be a mall rat and remember some of the dead and dying malls.

It was in front of a Great Eastern Department store with supermarket (remember it became Valley Fair.) I think the store was on a toxic waste dump. They are cleaning it up and I heard they are putting housing on it.

Further down Route 440 still was the old Pathmark which moved to the bigger location with KMart and the old Pathmark was a Rickels (another departed chain) which is now National Wholesale Liquidators.

I LOVE HISTORY esp. departed store and mall HISTORY.

Hey Catman', I know exactly where all these places are or used to be that you're writting about. In 1976, I was the assistant manager at Rogers Clothes for men for located in the Hudson Mall. I think it was the 2 Guys store next door separated from the Hudson Mall by only a 25 foot driveway between them. In the mid 70's things were starting to go down hill for the all those stripe malls on Rt. 440. Rogers was the end store on the mall next to the 2 Guys building and I remember that the mall magement told us that they were going to buy the 2 Guys property and connect the two buildings giving Hudson Mall an anchor store and needed our store space to make the connection work. It fell through due to legal stuff, but it would been interesting if they did it.

Rt. 440 was always conjested with traffic and when the bridge went up for a boat to pass about 3 times a day, it was a stand still for a half hour. What spooked me out the most was the old navy ships docked in the river right across from the store's parking lot ready to be scraped, they looked haunted and ghost like and would make creeking sounds, I didn't like it, but it came with the territory, I think they're gone from that area now.

Anderson-Little was a cheap-azz men's clothing store.  I recall my mother taking me there to buy dressier stuff.

I haven't found anything about the long-gone store online...I come to think of it, I don't really care.  Why did I post this thread anyway?

Because it had to be posted.  Anderson-Little went out of business back around 2000.  I can still remember the comercials.

This used to be a clothing store in malls (at least in the Southwest). Haven't seen one for quite a while. Are they defunct or just regional nowadays?

I have many memories of Two Guys; it was a big part of my childhood.

I grew up in Westfield, so the Watchung Two Guys was out store. In Watchung, there was the main store on top of the hill, and then the auto center at the bottom of the hill. I remember when I was really young, I'm very foggy here, but I think I remember (guessing 1965,66) my parents buying a magnavox console TV stereo in the lower building, so maybe at one time it was something else...or maybe my memory is just shot.

The store.....I have to say Wal-Mart is big, Kmart is big, but it seemed like Two Guys had EVERYTHING. It seemed like if you wanted something, there was an entire selection to choose from, not just a few items...The pet department was huge, (pets, fish, supplies, cages), lighting department was huge...TV
