Subject: Twin Towers--New York

Here's a little something that's caused a minor kerfuffle this week:
http://abc.net.au/triplej/events/beatthedrum/fake_photos/lo/tradecenter.jpg
The national "Youth" radio station in Australia, TripleJ, is holding a competition called "Beat The Drum" to see how people can promote the station by exposing its "Drum" logo to the widest audience. The doctored photo above was given as an example on the station's website.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old bastard, I will anyway. :o
Whilst deep down I can see a joke in most things, there is a much closer to the surface part of me that says commonsense dictates that it is just wrong.ÂÂ
This sort of crap is why I have always found Triple J to be so purile :-[ An organisation would have the right to NOT display submissions, but I am sure Triple J's reaction would have been to foam at the mouth with glee instead. Shock value rules, folks.
What next? The drum logo strung between two concentration camp victims perhaps? Highly amusing ::)

I thought the object of the excercise was that the logo is to be filmed/videoed being featured, or viewed by an audience ???
Whatever the case, it's been widely criticised for being extremely insensitive and completely inappropriate.

I'd like to build a list of edits. I'd like the movies added to the site too, but I'm going to build a seperate page as well to list them out.
People I Know - it's part of the deleted scenes.
Spiderman - Original trailer (has airplane caught in web between towers)
Zoolander - one scene edited, another has them blured out
Serendipity - skyline shot during title was cut
Law & Order: SVU - opening title scene
I'll update this list as people find them.

Most of them were done at the time of the event. They didn't want people to see it two weeks later in the cinema. Not sure I really agree, considering you could still see them in hundreds (literally) of movies you could rent.

I saw Panic Room on a list of movies, that had the WTC in it. Maybe it was edited for the DVD release, because I have a copy of it, and there's barely any outside shots. I have a few screen shots that might be close ups, and I'm not positive if any of these show it. I'm not from New York, so maybe people who live there know the locations of these shots and can rule it out?
I suspect the building on the right in the foreground of this shot

No, that's a shot of Central Park, and the buildings behind it are in midtown on the East Side of Manhattan; the WTC was quite a bit further downtown.
The towers were far taller than anything around them, so they'd be fairly obvious.

I agree it should be obvious, I've been able to pick them out in almost everything I've done so far. This one though, I'm wondering if they edited the towers out for the DVD release. The only other explanation I could think of, is that maybe we're seeing it above the first few floors, just the side or something (like in those first two shots)

Yes, it does seem to be a twin set, but no, the immediate area where the Towers were is not so densely populated with other buildings. Also, the external architecture of the Towers was quite different from the reflective panels these buildings have.
That does look like the financial district though, but I suspect it's a bit farther downtown of where the towers were. I can't immediately place it, though...

Here's a closeup of the surface of one of the towers -- the surfaces were dominated by the concrete vertical strips, with relatively narrow windows alternating in between them.

I know there was a big plaza around the buildings, which is why I didn't think it was them at first, but it's still odd to find two similar buildings together like that if it isn't them.
I'm at a disadvantage on this project sometimes, because I've only visited Manhatten once, and it was a long time ago. Even if it was a place I've visited dozens of times like Boston, something like this one would still be a challenge.

well this is very strange. I think the sighting of the WTC in Panic Room is a bust, these were the only scenes that came even close to looking like they had the towers in them.

unfortunately, the wife is as ripe as a watermelon at this point (and nearly as round). I think you picked the due date for the night out, even if it wasn't, it's still too close. I think last weekend's trip to Boston was the last long trip we're going to get to do for quite some time.

I'm just comparing the picture of the Towers on the WTC page with that first pic on this thread, and I don't think they're it either. The shot would have to have been composed from a ridiculous angle to make them overlap like that, and the windows didn't go all the way to the edges. I'd dump "Panic Room" from the list just on the grounds that you can't confirm if the WTC is actually in it anywhere.

Yeah. Remember the 1995 version of Godzilla. I was running a church youth group in 2001, and they wanted to watch that movie. I was surprised at how much it seemed to foreshadow what I was seeing on the news right then.
Also, I remember the old Spider Man live-action show from the '70s - it showed him climbing them several times.

It is interesting that you mention the TV live-action Spider Man show from the 1970's. Because you know in the original "Spider Man" movie from 2002, there is a brief scene near the beginning of the movie after Peter Parker's (actor Tobey Maguire), uncle is killed and Parker first uses his "Spidey" powers to go after the men who shot and killed his uncle (who actually Parker let set in motion), where Peter (Maguire) is trying to compose his thoughts about how he will use his powers and he goes up to what I believe is the Empire State Building (much of the movie was shot on location in NYC) and he looks out and sees the World Trade Center Twin Towers. (I wonder if anyone else remembered seeing this and I have wondered if this scene survived the transition from the movie theatres {which is the only place I watched this movie} and eventually cable and DVD release?) I thought it was a really great way, for Hollywood, to honor the memory of the WTC and the people lost on 9/11/2001. (But of course that's JMHO).
Also on that movie, "Spider Man", you do know that a couple of weeks before 9/11/2001 they did shoot a few scenes in NYC near the WTC, but in the end those scenes were deleted and had to be reshot a bit in Hollywood (they didn't want to jar people too much, especially so soon after the tragedy/disaster :\'(.) But also the week of 9/11/2001, I remember in some entertainment magazine shortly after 9/11 (and I think this was supposed to have had happened on 9/12/2001, the next day if not for what happened), the crew for "Spider Man" and Tobey Maguire were going to shoot some scenes from the top of the WTC and they were going to try and do a set up where it looked like Maguire was going to build a web between the two towers (a matter of fact a few of the early trailers for the movie, in the summer of 2001, showed a computer generated model of Maguire {with his voice} swinging between the two towers on the Spidey web.)
BTW (I'm not an Hollywood insider, but I do like movies and had wanted to be an actor, maybe I still can at the age of 41 years?) an answer to a question up above as to why there are more disaster films associated with NYC and Los Angeles (and sometimes D.C. & San Francisco; and not say, Chicago as often -- or any other major U.S. or Canadian or world city) being destroyed is this: It's easier to film in NYC or L.A. because that's where most major studios are located and/or in Hollywood it's easier to recreate NYC (and D.C., L.A. and San Fran) landscapes because the barrage of those city backlots that are used or older. (That was explained to me at Universal Studios and Disney/MGM studios in Orlando, FL when I lived near there as well).

Actually WTC didn't get cut entirely from "Spider Man". Although the scene from a summer 2001 trailer is known about (btw that was done with a computer generated model of actor, Tobey Maguire, with his voice dubbed in), there is actually a brief nighttime scene after Peter Parker's uncle, Ben Parker, is killed and Peter first uses his "Spidey" powers to go after the men who shot and killed his uncle {which actually Peter set in motion} where Peter collects his thoughts about how he will use his powers for good, where Peter/Spidey look towards the WTC (this was clearly seen by me and others in the movie theatre I went to; I again don't know if this scene survived both onto cable and DVD?, since I only watched this movie in a movie theatre). But I know I remember seeing this scene and talking to others who went to the movie theatre that evening about it (many mentioned, as with my thoughts, how Hollywood, in this instance, did a great job with that sole scene of remembering what was lost and the people who were lost on 9/11/2001).

Spiderman - Original trailer (has airplane caught in web between towers)
Actually, this scene was never intended to be in the original movie. It was a concept and technology test, to see if the effect of a CG SpiderMan would look believeable. It was cleaned up, and released as the first "Teaser" trailer.
This is not totally unknown in the industry. SOmetimes a special Teaser is made, just to get attention. I am sure a lot of us remember the "Museum" teaser made for Godzilla. It was not in the movie, and was never intended to be in the movie.

Actually I can almost remember a couple of movies where the WTC "snuck" through and made it in the picture. I am almost certain that there is a shot of the Trade Center in "Tribulation Force", one of the movies in the "Left Behind" series. (Christian fiction depicting the end times for anyone who is not familiar) I do agree, cutting the towers out of movies does seem to treat them like they never existed, although when I do see them in a flick it gives me kind of an eerie chill.

here's an incredibly obscure WTC reference -- in "herbie rides again" (i rented it instead of watching that dreadful lindsay lohan movie when it came out recently as a kind of mute protest) the plot centers around an evil developer type who is planning to build a fictional building and has to tear down the house of this nice old lady who owns herbie. and though the bulding is fictional it's obviously the twin towers, except it's called something else. so it's sorta like WTC as villain, and it makes it almost a bit of a shock to watch the movie now.
i think it came out the year after the WTC was finished, and i remember real vaguely, i was just a little squirt at the time, that some people complained about the WTC because it was so boxy and angular and was at odds with a lot of the more gothic-y looking architecture of the other buildings like the empire state building. i think if somebody had come up to me back then and ever said i would miss the twin towers i'd think they were crazy. but now i do. go figure.

Unfortunately, today's society is too concerned with being "politically correct" and afraid to come anywhere near offending someone. If I remember correctly, Starbucks wound up pulling an ad for whatever beverage they were pushing at the time because the poster portrayed two tall glasses of said beverage with the slogan "collapse into cool". If I ruffle anyone's feathers I apologize in advance but personally that was going a little over the edge, having to pull that ad. I'm not a huge starbucks fan myself, but I don't believe that it was an intentional play in an attempt to capitalize on the disaster of 9/11.

The coolest movie trailer I ever saw:
In the middle of Manhattan, a bunch of gun-toting bandits race out of a bank and hop in a waiting helicopter to make their getaway. They fly over the city for a minute or so, then suddenly the chopper stops dead in midair!
Bewildered, the robbers start looking around, and the camera pulls back to show us...
They're trapped between the World Trade Towers in a giant SPIDER-WEB!
No words were necessary except Summer 2002.
If anyone has the original Spidey on DVD, please tell me if that trailer's included!
Your Pal,
Doc

I agree with you. I think it's better not to edit the towers out of movies and pictures. It's sad to see them in movies and to know that they don't exist anymore, but I think by editing them out you also edit out an important part of this country's history and the memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11.
I think that they should rebuild the WTC to look exactly the same as the original towers. Here is a website about it. http://www.triroc.com/wtc/

some have argued that building the new WTC as a replica of the doomed towers would be a bad omen or "jinx"

That doesn't surprise me. ::) With that kind of thinking, anything bulit on the site would be a bad omen I would think.

I just happened to watch "Wallstreet" for the first time in nearly 20 yrs.. and I had forgotten the spectacular skyline footage with the WTC towers in the beginning . Another thing about this movie is seeing the Apple 2 computers they were using and those gigantic cellphones as big as a brick. Amazing since this was at the height of the technology advancement age.

Yes, that is quite amazing isn't it. I was at school yesterday, and I left my laptop in the library. Going back to get it, I asked the librarian if somebody had turned it in at the desk. I said something like "I left my computer here by mistake." As I was leaving, I remembered a time when such a statement would have been ludicrous. Back in 1981 when personal computers first came out, I couldn't have imagined lugging one *anywhere* with the huge CRT screen and 5 1/4" disk drives those babies had. And I remember my first laptop - a POS that wouldn't even run Windows 3.1!

this one looks like it will be intense

I was just talking to a coworker about it. I said, "It's Oliver Stone....his movies are well done but you come out feeling like you've been hit with a sledgehammer for two hours because he's so intense." My initial thought was that I would not want to see it.
But my coworker said that, from what he's heard, this one is different -- that it's not about the destruction at all, but instead about the compassion that people showed for each other in the aftermath. So...if that's true...I might consider it.

I hate the plans for the new building. If you want to make it the tallest building in the world, make it the tallest building via inhabitable floors, not antennae or spiraling superstructure. Secondly, don't call it the "Freedom Tower." That's lame. "Freedom" as a stand-alone concenpt signfies nothing, but in the case, I'm afraid it implies an Orwellian antonym. After all, they couldn't call it the 'Shut Up and Do As You're Told Tower." Why don't they name it after a great civic or political leader? No, scratch that (Why don't they name it after a great civic or political leader?). They'll call it the Giulliani Tower or the Cheney Tower (shudders).
I don't go for the jinx theory. I'm not superstitious, it's bad luck (arf arf arf!) I just thought the WTC towers were eyesores. The 1960s produced some of the most hideous architectural styles. For instance the new "Government Center" (aka Scollay Square) in Boston and the expanded UMass-Amherst campus were built in a design called "brutalism." It was ugly as sin to start with and has aged even worse!

This Rod Stewart video has quite a bit of WTC footage. This is one of my favorite Rod Stewart songs . I had never realized the NYC skyline was so eminent in this video, when I had seen it back in the 80's.

I can't believe nobody mention the 1976 version of King Kong. That was the first movie in which the towers were a prominant part of the movie.
I actually had a large poster of this on my wall when it came out. It was a tear-out from a Dynomite magazine.

I miss those buildings so much man. I truly respect those who were lost (including my Brother's Best Friend) but the Towers seriously need to be replaced. They were just too important to the skyline. Southern Manhattan doesn't stand out like it used to.
No ugly "FREEDOM TOWER"!!! >:(
