Subject: Car Dealerships

Written By: C.NOIZE on 07/25/05 at 10:19 pm

Does anyone know of any car dealerships that are still running out of downtown store fronts?  Or have they all been moved to sprawling parking lots that take up way too much space?

Here's one that used to be in my hometown, but now is no more:

Here in New Zealand, most of our car dealerships are now car yards like you described. However, in the ritzy part of town, lambourghini and ferrari dealerships still use the 'store window' approach. I think more expensive cars are shown in store windows where they are safer and kept from the elements. An example of this is the movie Gone In 60 Seconds, where all the ferraris are stolen from inside the store, and at the start they throw a brick through the store window and drive off with the porsche. But most everyday cars are now sold from the yard.

Good observation - I don't know of any "storefront" dealerships. To be honest, I'm not even sure if I've seen one in the flesh before.

However, there seems to be a slow-moving trend towards downtown areas becoming the center of commerce again, as opposed to suburbia (just like in BTTF 2, although I'm sure it won't be quite as drastic as that in 10 years, LOL!), so it's possible they could make a comeback.

There are still a couple of very small car showrooms with shop window type displays in my town centre.  I think they are all used car dealers. The Ferrari place closed a year or so ago.

There used to be Bartlett Chevrolet here in Absecon...And Holiday Motors AMC in Atlantic City, which is now Providence Motor Car Co. (named after the street it's on, Providence Ave.)

Arena Motors in Hammonton still exists.

I have, when Bartlett Chevrolet in Absecon was open, I'd go and look at all the cool muscle cars...I was all of twelve years old, and already a gearhead.

Does a Ferrari dealer in the middle of a casino count??

Remember how every September(for the new model year), they would cover up the new cars in sheets to keep the new body style changes and new models secret?

I've seen that. Sometimes they unveil them earlier, though.

Only a three new-car dealerships remain in downtown Jackson these days: Fowler Buick/GMC; Paul Moak Pontiac; Paul Moak Volvo/Subaru.  The other such dealerships have gone out of business, left the city, or have relocated to sites visible and accessible from interstate highways.
