Subject: I come in peace!
Written By: Tribbles on 12/20/08 at 6:16 pm
Hi there,
I'm new today, and it's a good day too. Tonight is the longest night of the year! Anyway, I'm obviously full of random facts, you can ask me just about anything and set me on a quest to know it. I am working my way through a BS in Microbiology, and will talk incessantly on all science topics, so stop me if I ramble on. ;)
I enjoy Science Fiction, especially Star Wars and Star Trek, including the extended universe. Currently I'm watching Bones and Mythbusters and anything else I can fit time for into my schedule (which includes classes, a job with the campus and two lab postings).
I work in a molecular plant biology lab, studying the hydroxyproline rich residues of plant cell walls. I also work in a vertebrate parasitology lab, studying the gut parasites of gophers (I know, gross 8-P) the lab studies the effects of parasites on food webs. http://www.lifesci.ucsb.edu/eemb/labs/kuris/index.html
I am fascinated with theater, film, and music in general, though I could use a better knowledge of pop music. I also have a strong interest in 20th century history, and all forms of transportation from trains to cruise ships.
Other than that, as I said, I have incurable curiosity, feel free to exploit it. :)

and you go in pieces....
just kidding. Hope you like quotes from really bad movies... I use them a lot!
Bones one of my favorite shows! Can't wait for the new eps to come back on!
anyway- welcome to the boards hope you don't become as addicted as I am... and if you fail your classes it's not my fault!
btw the quote is from the "classic" Dolph Lundgren flick "Dark Angel" (1990)

Trekker sounds a bit more masculine than Trekkie. I think this whole thing should be settled by citezens in a ballot messure. Darn it I want controversy.

Trekkie has a wikipedia entry
Google gets
Results 1 - 10 of about 473,000 for trekkies
and
Results 1 - 10 of about 5,710,000 for trekker mainly about things such as GPS systems or cars and not Star Trek.
So Trekkie it is!

As I've understand it, Trekkie is the term used for die-hard fans/fanatics whereas Trekker is used for mere followers of the series (people that can still tell fact from fiction ;)).
The difference: Trekkers would name their dog Bones, Trekkies would name their child Worf.
...But I could be wrong about this.
Anyway, anyone watching Mythbusters is a welcome addition to this board in my book. :)

First thought that crossed my mind when I saw the subject of this thread was to start humming this little ditty:
Shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill...
We come in peace? Shoot to kill, shoot to kill, men...
- The Firm, Star Trekkin', 1987
...and now I can't get the song out of my head.
I thought the preferred PC term was trekker?
Yup. But she'll fit right in around here. Plenty of us trekkers on the message board... (Oh, CRAP!)

Actually, I was being serious. People do stuff like that, you know. Not that I've ever met any Worfs in my life...
Wait... you get mythbusters in Holland?
We sure do, and I've seen most of the episodes. 8)
"There's trekkers on the message board, message board, message board..."
It's life, Jim, but not as we know it. :D ;D ;)

If I run into anyone who's named their kid Worf, Data or 7 of 9 I think I might have to laugh in their face.
Wow the quality of TV has improved greatly since I Was last there....in 1984 ;D The only show they got that I recognized was Diffrent Strokes. I was never so happy so see Gary Coleman!

I always found Trekkie to be in more common use. Not that I would know too much about it :)
Foo Bar: I have that song on my iPod. "It's worse than that it's physics Jim!"
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

welcome to our fun cyberworld Tribbles. You bring some entirely new things to the board, although I'm not sure where you can start a thread on gopher gut parasites or plant cell walls ::) ...actually, you can in the Ask me threads. anyways, I'm Mike and I recommend that you start off by having as much fun as you can stand.
Live long and prosper

The way I see it both trekkies and trekkers are much more likely to watch a star trek marathon than run an actual marathon, but if the marathon was run then only the trekkie would do it in a full costume. Trekkers wish the show was on more often and trekkies wish they lived in the star trek universe.
