It's just an aknowledgement of maybe a good post, if someone says something you agree with or just for the hell of it. You will see how much Karamel you have on the top left of your post underneath your name. There is also a "more Karamel" line below someones name to click if you want to award them some more karma. Finally, on the top of any given page are headings that you can click on. The KarmaLog heading will take you to the stats list and allow you to see (for about 2 days), who has awarded you Karma.
Now, you'll see under your name that you have 2 karamel points. I hope this answers it.

I was going to...but an error occured (you can't repeat a karma action without waiting 24 hours). Yes, there are limitations to the system... Other limitations: you have to have made at least 100 posts to be enabled to hand out karma yourself, and you can't award karma to yourself.
