Not the Bryan Adams song, it sounded kind of like, but not quite like, Jackson Browne or Bob Seger, and IIRC the intro to the song was an electric piano.
It is occasionally in classic rock or "adult hits" playlists. Haven't heard it in like 3 years.

There was a song by Poco called "Heart of the night", Chorus goes "In the heart of the night" Maybe that's it?

Any more details that could help? Could it have been a local band for example? Or any more lyrics you recall?

If you aren't 100% sure the chorus is "In the heat of the night", could it be "heat of the moment" by Asia. There's also a song by Krokus called "In the heat of the night" but it's a 1990/91 song,

I'm trying to conjure up some lyrics, all I can tell you is that it seemed like some kind of love song, maybe a tragedy song.

I just thought of another one. Chorus goes doesn't have "In The Heat Of The Night", but "In the dark of night". A song by INXS, titled "By my side". It's a love song.

Sorry haven't been around in a couple of days-life is crazy right now! I am glad it helped, I do that all the time when I think I know the lyric and it winds up being jeeest a little different than I thought. :)

Oddly I was mixing Jackson Browne's "Tender Is The Night" in my head with the song by Worrall that whistledog posted. Thanks to both members who posted both songs for untangling the Gordian knot of this mystery. :)
This was as big of a baffling mystery as me getting "The Motown Song" by Rod Stewart mixed up with several other songs and for years swearing that it was an obscure Gloria Estefan recording in Spanish because I couldn't remember the lyrics too well and couldn't identify Rod's voice from my faint memories of it.
