Well, you use words like that and we'll all think Suzanne Vega, Tom's Diner, ca. 1990s, and it's vocal.
Instrumentals are hard.
Were there any vocals at all? If so, do you remember any of 'em?
If not, do you remember what kinds of synthesizers they used? I mean, did it sound more like Vangelis (the music in 80s PBS series Cosmos), or like some of the early Moog stuff (Dick Hyman, Minotaur). Hmm. How 'bout this, did it sound like a late-70s organ's backbeat buttons, a bunch of square waves that could have been generated by a Nintendo gameboy, or something that a PC couldn't produce without a really good soundcard until the 90s?)
Do you remember anything else about the track? Did it get significant airplay? (Jean-Michel Jarre was extraordinarily prolific - hasn't stopped releasing music since 1976. His biggest hit was probably his 1986 tribute to the Challenger astronauts, Rendezvous IV.)
Try trawling through sample tracks from new-age music of the late 70s and early 80s on some music service - and when you find something that sounds vaguely familiar (even if it's about the right level of technology), let us know who your artist sounded like. Instrumentals are hard, but that doesn't mean we won't try.

I'm quite sure you are indeed looking for a Jean Michel Jarre tune, as I can hear it playing in my head right now. Thing is, I don't know the title either. :(

Can you give a guess as to year/decade? I'm pretty familiar with JMJ's work.

What the OP said...it's either (late) 1970's or (early) 1980's. And it's not Rendezvous IV, nor Oxygène IV, Equinoxe V or Magnetic Fields II. It might be one of the other Oxygen or Magnetic Fields sequels, though.

That ^ is not the one I was thinking of either, but maybe it's what the OP is looking for. I can't get inside his head.
After listening to almost every Oxygène, Magnetic Fields and Equinox tune there is I'm pretty sure it's neither one of those. Which is quite a bummer. I was confident I would find it amongst those.
Maybe I can try and record whatever is in my head.

Well, that didn't work. But never mind, 'cause I found what I was looking for!!! :D
Yes, it's French.
Yes, it's from the 1970's.
But no, it's not Jean-Michel Jarre. Sorry about the confusion. :-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_ukfGAd8T4

This, and Jarre's 'Oxygene (Part IV)', were both in the British chart at the same time...September 1977...
Two French instrumentals in the Top 4, which hasn't happened before or since!
