Subject: Solved: Weathermen, "Bang!" (att: Langdon Hughes, late 80s dance IDs)
Written By: Foo Bar on 02/02/09 at 11:31 pm
So I find this ancient hardbeat vinyl rip that I'm really digging. And since it's basically the story of my life, I'm going to pick up where Langdon left off eight years ago and complete the lyrics. (( she went with "shot", I'm going with "shock". The context of the lyrics is to "do things that surprise your friends after having had a really boring day at the office."))
But before I go about transcribing lyrics, I google them first. And the only occurrence of the string "Shove it down and hit the road" on the Googleweb is in this thread on our very own board's archives, from more than eight years ago, in which a poster named "Langdon Hughes" asked for the source for two tracks.
Even in its infancy, this site waspretty goodfracking awesome. We got one of her tracks, but the other remained a mystery...
...until today.
LYRICS: The Weathermen, Bang! (a.k.a. Bang, Bang!)
"Bang, bang, bang, bang!"
It's 8:02, the coffee's cold,
Shove it down and hit the road,
Pressed and neat, let's kill the streets,
Jump to the rhythm of the traffic flow.
Punch the clock, I'm right on time,
Boss is smilin', feelin fine,
Telephone's ringin', telex singin'
And the hips of the secretary pass by swingin'...
(short instrumental break)
Round about noon you take a little break,
Maybe have a cheeseburg and a chocolate shake,
Trade a few jokes, some anecdotes,
A couple of laughs, and a couple of smokes.
(Afternoon's passin', it's ten to three,
Up comes a question on my TV screen.)
"Are ya goin' to the party?
Will ya take me to the party."
(extended awesome hardbeat instrumental break)
Back to the apartment, shave and shower,
Down a couple drinks, 'cause you got another hour,
Get a little little loose, pick a change of clothes,
Order up some pizza, anything goes.
It's Friday night, you better take a cab.
Down too many, you could end up on the slab,
So have another drink 'cause you don't even think,
About breathalyzer tests or drivin' in the sink.
"Take me to the party"
(Don't drink and drive)
"Take me to the party"
(That's my advice)
(short breaks)
You've got to hey, turn it up,
Rip it down and burn it up,
And ho ho - shock the gang!
You've got to hey, blow the door,
Hit the walls and slap the floor,
And ho ho - go out with a bang! (bang!)
(moar instrumental breaks!)
You've got to hey, blow your cool,
Roll around and break the rules,
And ho ho - shock the gang!
You've got to hey, be a brat,
Stretch it thin and make it snap,
And ho ho - go out with a bang! (bang!)
(breaks)
You've got to hey, turn it up...
(repeat 2nd-last verse in full.)
And ho ho - go out with a bang! (bang!)
(breaks, then repeat only the last half of each line of the last verse.)
"Blow your cool!"
"Break the rules!"
"Be a brat!"
"Make it snap!"
"Make it bang, bang! Bang, bang!"
Sources: The Weathermen themselves have the video for Bang! on their website. Our poster was after The Weathermen, Bang (1989), and/or Bang, Bang! (1989).
"Bang!" starts off with your standard 4/4 backbeat. "Bang" is with vocals. "Lichtenstein Mix" is instrumental. Cover art is a large (as in, filling the entire 12" square of the art) "BANG!" against a black-and-white dot-printed image from Reefer Madness. Vinyl is SPV 50-9450.
"Bang! Bang!" starts off with the same backbeat, but with 16th-notes overtop of it. "Rocket Mix" is with vocals. "ICBM Mix" is instrumental. Cover art is a deliriously cartoonish WM-logo'ed jet fighter blowing up a boombox, with the caption "Suddenly, Joe Morton has contact! He fires two Hard Beat remixx rockets - thru the roar of his engines. Whap! The missiles hit home... Bang! Bang! (Bold in original cover art. Credits as follows.)
Bang, Bang! credits on the back of the album, as follows:
Remix Pilot: Joe Morton
Technical Navigation: Carl S. Johanssen
Bombs: Chuck B.
Digital Nutrition: Jimmy Joe Snark
Live Concussions: Paul "Le Beast" Zahl
Search Lights + Flares: Dazzle D.
Mission Control Mix: Frankenoid Lieuaart
Sleeve: Erica commandeered by Roy Lichtenstein
* (( "Nothing Like It" )) recorded by The Weathermen at ((WM-logo)) mobile studio. ((This track features samples like "I take it you go for a good bang now and then", and "Yes Sir, we've banged our way to the moon, and now we're gonna bang our way to Mars!" "Nothin' like it!" (female, singing like an old TV jingle) "A Bang a day keeps the doctor away, so start your day with a bang!" ))
((( edit: As per Midas, Langdon's a "she", not a "he" )))
