Subject: Need song title - Jolene? (I Think)
Written By: mabus on 09/05/08 at 3:26 pm
There was a song in the 80's whose title and artist I do not know. I only recall a few snippits of lyrics (not making this easy I know). The snippets I remember are;
"he ain't gonna come back and apologize, jolene" "you know he'll never be true to you" "...and get outta town jolene, there's another world (life?) waiting somewhere for you"
Any of this ring a bell?
P.S;
It is definately NOT Dolly Parton's "Jolene"

There's a Canadian artist named 'Graham Shaw' He had a minor hit called 'Jolene' in 1981. I have never heard the song. I could not find any song clips or lyrics for Jolene. However, you can hear other songs by Shaw at his website below. I also emailed music expert Vic Ferri to see if he has the record 'Good Manners in the 1980's'.

Hey Claybricks,
Thanks for the reply. Clicking on the music samples the voice is plaussible. All the song samples are somewhat different from the one I remember, so it's impossible to make a dead on match, but he definately could be the singer. The timing of his song's release definately makes him a strong candidate, and the name of the song definately gives one confidence that he may be the singer. Google is completely unhelpful as far as lyrics go however. Just when you thought google had absolutely everything :)

I tried YouTube, Napster, Google, Limewire, Edonkey and ITunes store. No hits at all. Looks like it may take some time to find this thing and see :)

Actually, that song was not a minor hit for him. It never even charted ;D
I have that Graham Shaw album somewhere, but I don't know if the lyrics fit

Hey Whistledog,
I saw your post at the 80sxchange and I found that the song 'Jolene' was released as a 45 single. The words in your post "songs like Roll All Nite Long and Jolene were not as successfull" gave me the impression that the song received airplay so that's why I thought it may have been a minor hit.

I hope you can find the album so we'll know if this is the correct song.

LOL At the time, sites I'd discovered on Graham Shaw mentioned that they were lesser hits, but now that I have charts for Canada, I can see that the only chart single Graham Shaw had was 'Can I Come Near' in 1980

You and me both lol :)
It's amazing that you guys are talking about Can I Come Near now, as I just managed to track that down on Emule. Gives me some hope that other songs of his might be out there, including, hopefully, Jolene, if it's the right one :)

I just received an email from music expert Vic Ferri. A friend of Vic's told him that he really doesn't remember the lyrics but is very sure that the song is not a Dolly Parton cover.

No it's DEFINATELY not the Dolly Parton song, it's also not the Cake song. You really gotta wonder how many songs titled "Jolene" could be out there. We're up to at least 3.

Tried that as well, no luck. I managed to track down a Vinyl version of Graham Shaw's "good manners in the 1980's" which contains the song, on E-bay. Unfortunately I don't have a vinyl record player anymore, and the E-Bay seller didn't have a way of converting the music from the LP. So the search continues :)

Mabus,
Vic Ferri converts vinyl to digital for a modest fee. He can get the record for you, convert the music, remove pops and cliicks and even reproduce the album art on CD. I highly recommend him.

Hey Claybricks, that's an excellent lead thanks. Assuming Graham Shaw is the guy who sang the song (we're still not sure about that lol). Imagine after all this it turns out to be a false lead? :D

Found an interesting website that has a bunch of different versions from a bunch of different artists. Let's you play the entire song too, so you can see if it's the song you're searching for.
None of the versions match the song i'm looking for. Frustratingly, Graham Shaw's version of "Jolene" is not one of the available samples. So the search continues :)
Still the web site itself may be interesting to others looking for other songs, so I thought I'd post the url here:

Music expert Vic Ferri told me the Shaw song has your lyrics. It is the correct song.
Chorus...
"Oh Jolene, what are you letting him do to you"
The CD is available here...

Sorry to dig this thread out from under the dust, but you are in fact correct...the song is Jolene and it's by Graham Shaw. I found this thread while I was searching for it, because I used to have the album (probably still do somewhere) and I wanted to get a copy of the song on MP3.
It's a great song...but that might just be because I grew up with it :)
