Subject: Need help identifying 3 obsure 80s songs
Written By: searching1980s on 06/16/06 at 9:43 am
I heard all these in 1984-5 on the Vegas college station and can't complete my Vegas Best collection without them. If you can identify the titles and/or bands from these scraps of lyrics I would appreciate the help. They might be European imports as they played a lot of those. Might be pre-release demos of songs officially released later; that happened a lot at that station. Also would appreciate any info on that station whose call numbers etc. I can't remember except that my favorite songs were usually on a program called "Rock Avenue" but they weren't what I was used to calling 'rock.'.
Here's the lyrics:
1) you can stand beside me but I can't help you decide -- through every wave, every wave, every wave must have it's tide -- don

Someone named Foo Bar helped me find two other songs while I was still looking on the wrong forum -- would someone please take care of those karma points as I can't yet? And what are the two little stars under my name now? What does pingu mean? I'm sure there's a place for me to find this stuff -- would someone show me the breadcrumb trail? Thanks.

Those stars mean you advance in Penguin Title. When you reach a certain amount of posts, your penguin title (which appears in small print below your user name) will change. You can get a maximum of 4 stars

I went back to my second generation tapes of off-air recordings from 1984-5 and got almost complete lyrics for these three songs. Still need help figuring out titles and/or bands. I've tried the " ___ ____ _____ _____" +lyric search trick and it didn't work on any of these:
1)
No!
You can stand beside me but I can't help you decide
Through every wave, every wave, every wave must have it's tide
(repeat)
Don't get lost in the tide
I thought I had seen it all
Too deaf to heed the call
(repeat twice)
The call.
(repeat first stanza)
Those who take their bows, they usually fall
(repeat twice)
They fall.
2) Rockabilly with female lead vocalist:
I live my life how I know how -- that's how I live my life
I live my life the only way I'm gonna -- that's how I live my life
I don't have to prove nothing to you
I don't have to talk or act like you
Or work nine to five, just to stay alive
Or wear a neon skirt to keep from getting hurt
Or groom my shaggy hair -- I don't see what you care
I live my life.
I don't have to prove nothing to you
I don't have to talk or act like you
Or tell the boys to fly -- well you know I'd rather die
Or drown away my blues and then take it out on your
Or _____ ________ that you choose, or should I say are chosen for you
I live my life
I live my life
I live my life
I live my life
3) male vocalist with male chorus; many lines, they each take half of the line; designated by a dash:
Cold heat, soft ______
Open lock, timeless clock
Red sky, blue sun
That is the way that things have become
Colleen Confusion -- your love's a wild illusion
I'm calling you Colleen -- Colleen Loneliness
There's nothing here without both of us
There's a vacant cloud -- in an empty room
And they whisper loud -- like a sonic boom
Hear the _____ cry -- his tears are dry
Cause he knows the answer -- and still wonders shy
These four walls, ceiling, floor
Walking out the window and looking through doors
Colleen Confusion...
___________ -- no no _________
___________ -- no no blue sun
That is the way that things have become
Colleen Confusion...

"Every Wave" is a song by Bangah. They were a local Athens, GA band when I went to college there in the late '80's. I didn't know anyone left on earth knew about this song but me... I love it. It's one of the few pieces of vinyl I've bothered to keep over the years, as I've never been able to find it on CD.

Regarding "The Rock Avenue" show on KUNV
(KUNV is currently a JAZZ station)
Jennifer Gilroy, WBFO marketing and development associate and intern in the early 1990s, was Development Director at 91.5FM KUNV, at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) 1992-1996. In addition to her managerial position, she became an air personality ("Jennifah oh Jenny") on the "Rock Avenue" a program awarded as the #1 College Alternative Rock Station in America, and has relocated to New York City.

About KUNV
Once upon a time there was an independent and ecclectic Las Vegas radio station with the call letters, KUNV, 91.5 on your FM dial. It was run by a really cool guy named Rob Rosenthal and a bunch of totally dedicated volunteers. KUNV played really fantastic music on a show called The Rock Avenue. So weekdays from 7 pm until 10 am you got to hear bands like Flipper, The Misfits, Big Black and Social Distortion along with bands even the DJ's had never heard of. But if they sounded good, they got airplay.
My first airshift was in January 1990, and after that I was completely hooked. Over the next 7 years I was on the air almost every week. For a while I had Mondays 6 to 10 am and later, Wednesdays 8 to10 pm. Everybody hung out together, it was like family.
Actually, before all of this happened there was a station that could only broadcast to the MSU building on the UNLV campus. It was referred to as KJON. That's because the studio was a modified men's room, located next to the MSU Ballroom on the second floor. When KUNV came into existence this room was used to store old stuff. Later on, due to space constrains on the third floor, it was cleaned out and made into an office for the Rock staff.
Then Bill Clinton, the President of the United States, came to speak at UNLV and the Secret Service guys found the old missile casing that had been used for an ashtray/doorstop for years and completely freaked out. They searched the whole office and made them take down all the posters and junk from the walls. Then they swept through the third floor, because KUNV's men's room was to become the official Presidential Toilet during Bill's visit. Any decorations here also had to be removed. It was very sad and I believe it heralded the beginning of the end of KUNV as we knew it.
I've been documenting the Las Vegas music scene for quite a while now, check out some of my old stuff for a musical trip down memory lane in the Spotlight Archives (covering June 1996 to August 1997).
January 29th, 1997 was my final day as a KUNV volunteer. It was fun while it lasted, but all good things must end. These are the ashes from which SinCitySounds.com (in all of it's numerous incarnations throughout the years) springs forth. It's still all about the music.

I haven't been so happy to hear a radio broadcast since 1996. Back in the day I did a 6a-10a morning drive show on "The Rock Avenue" KUNV 91.5FM an underground rock station in Las Vegas. We were nominated 5x as the #1 CMJ station in America ..we won 2x...I've also done reviews for Sin City Sounds.
Anyway...I LOVE what you are doing, your radio station is bad ass. I'm interested in submitting a demo tape.

Employee Review
The Dream Syndicate - The Days Of Wine And Roses
by Donna DeChristopher
I first discovered the Dream Syndicate late one night in 1983. The local college radio station, KUNV, didn’t begin its alternative programming, “The Rock Avenue,” until 11 P.M., so much of my exposure to new music occurred on the fringes of sleep.
I was drifting off when I heard the DJ announce the next song as “The Days of Wine And Roses.” The title piqued my interest. Although just 13, I loved classic films and already had an affinity for the tortured Billy Wilder tale of the same name. I fluffed up my purple pillows and listened. The song—and the band—were different than anything I knew. It wasn’t the fashionable synth-pop my junior-high friends listened to or the angry rebellion of my older, cooler, high school friends’ punk rock... It was swirly and layered and frenzied and desperate. What captured me most was Steve Wynn’s voice. It was thin and detached, yet utterly passionate. In the chorus, Wynn chanted “Everybody says I don’t care, no I don’t care...” but the blasé delivery seemed to be a contradiction. It was audio noir and within three short minutes, I was hooked for a lifetime.
Later that week, “When You Smile” aired on KUNV. This time, the song was introduced with “This is the guy who owns the Golden Nugget.”
Although casino magnate Steve Wynn did not rock, thus began the Steve Wynn/Dream Syndicate comedy of errors.
When my radio station booked Steve for a solo show at Calamity Jayne’s Nashville Nevada (the premiere whorehouse-turned-concert venue) I begged to announce the show. I bought a new red dress and had my highlights done (quite an undertaking if you knew how big my hair was at 20). Unfortunately, the show was cancelled.
I was home with the flu when my friends took a road trip to see John Wesley Harding and the Judybats at the Whisky. Steve jumped onstage. I received frantic calls from the ladies room and my best friend brought back an autographed Wynn-crafted sketch entitled “Steve Wynn’s Cat.”
The saddest miss happened during a radio-station trip to Tijuana. I was playing nursemaid to a coworker who took a steel-toed Doc Marten to the forehead during Henry Rollins’ set at Iguanas. Meanwhile, Ian, our pseudo-pathological liar-music director, stayed in San Diego and allegedly ran into Steve at the Casbah and told him about my alleged crush.
That I never saw The Dream Syndicate—and everyone else was running into Steve—became a running joke.
Finally, we crossed paths at a P.J. Harvey show. There, in the lobby of the Hollywood Palladium, was Steve Wynn. Now, I’m not the starstruck type, but I kept saying “Oh, my god. That’s Steve Wynn. I can’t believe he’s Steve Wynn. Can you believe he’s Steve Wynn?” to his girlfriend. I told Steve I worked at KUNV. He then recalled meeting my MD and said “Ian told me all about you.” Oh, great. Now he thinks I’m a stalker with big hair.
Soon after, my 11-year radio career ended. My final song was “Tell Me When It’s Over.”
Eventually, I saw Steve perform solo in 1998 at the Troubadour. I bought an amazing leather jacket. I hadn’t been there in about five years. Who knew about permit parking? What do you mean the car’s not stolen, but towed? I just saw Steve Wynn!
I no longer turn into a giggly teenager when I see Steve Wynn. Sure, I buy new clothes for the shows, but hey, if the wind blows, I’m shopping... He’s actually become a good friend, like a really cool older brother who buys you lots of drinks and gives rotten dating advice. Still, when I listen to The Days Of Wine And Roses I’m back in eight grade, about to discover the frantic, fervent, foreboding stories to which The Dream Syndicate gave musical life.
