I heard her being interviewed about this song, she said it was all about her dilemma as to whether to stick with her band (No Doubt) or whether to branch out into a solo career.

I heard (through the voice in my head) that for the lyrics, she done a Bowie, and picked random words from a hat.
That's the only way I can think of, that anyone would have lyrics that just don't make sense.
