That sounds like "Nineteen" by Paul Hardcastle. It came out in 1985, which was 19 years ago.

You might mean the parody of the Paul Hardcastle song. I think it was by British impressionist Rory Bremner. I think it came out quite soon afterwards.
It was about the "bodyline" tour of Australia (I think). And the 19 bit was the batting average. He did impressions of all the famous cricket commentators.

That's the one, karen...apparently, Hardcastle gave it his blessing...

19 could also have been the actual innings total of the England squad around that time, seeing as we were getting walloped by almost everyone...!!
The opposition that caused the most damage at the time was the West Indies...how times change, eh?!!

Or what about the "Stutter Rap (No Sleep Till Bedtime)" by Morris Minor and the Majors:-
Well, no-one's ever seen what I mean
From the age of n-n-n-n-n-n-thirteen
We've all been caught in a mouth trap
So join with us in the st-st-st-st-stutter rap

Y--eee--ee-sss...we'd better take cover...!!
Anyway, as this thread has slipped on to Morris Minor & The Majors - I thought now would be as good a time as any to resurrect this little gem from yesteryear...
Now, who ever said the BBC shows enough crap these days - they were doing it even then...!!
And shame on Una Stubbs for getting involved...!!

That's it. I knew it was 'someone' if you see what I mean. I think I remember him mentioning it in "Round Ireland with a Fridge".

Ah but this series only lasted 6 episodes. If it were on today it would be onto it's third series by now!
And shame on Una Stubbs for getting involved...!!
You mean it was worse than Wurzle Gummidge? ;)

That is the one yes. It reached the UK top 40 just 1 month after Hardcastle's original hit #1 :o

The series that inspired the song actually happened. Philip beat me to the video, but I was at least able to find some lyrics. Starting source: The Commentators, Nineteen Not Out
Edits: A few minor corrections from me, and a host of bigger corrections from karen and Philip Eno, and we're still confused by one line. Can you help, dear reader?
Lyrics: The Commentators (w/Rory Brenner), N-n-nineteen Not Out:
N-n-n-n-nineteen. Nineteen.
N-n-n-n-nineteen. Nineteen.
They fought the most disastrous series in test history..
They fought the most disastrous series in test history.
In 1984, the test series against the West Indies seemed like just another runner.
But it wasn't. It was different in many ways, and so were those who did the batting.
In 1933, the England captain's average was 35. In 1984, it was n-nineteen.
N-n-n-n-nineteen. Nineteen.
N-n-n-n-nineteen. Nineteen.
(Nineteen)
Nineteen.
N-n-n-n-nineteen. Nineteen.
N-n-n-n-nineteen. (Good vintage!)
(Nineteen)
(Lords, Heddingly, Oval, Cucumber sandwich)
And the heaviest defeat of the series ended at Old Trafford today, with England beaten by an innings of 64 runs.
(Video: "continued", not "ended".)
Wasn't really sure what was going on.
Wasn't really sure what was going on.
In 1933 the Australian batsman typically stood at the crease for 12 overs, but was exposed to hostile bowling every minute. It was the bodyline series.
(Video: and was exposed to hostile bowling every minute.)
And now he's taking a long run up, he's bowled straight into Woodfull caught rather a nasty one on the back of the neck, he's gonna need quite a lot of stitches in that, I'd say about nineteen.
All those who've forgotten the score,
They still remember the team.
Destruction, they called bodyline,
Their captain's name was Jardine.
He wasn't even aiming at the stumps.
He wasn't even aiming at the stumps.
What a marvellous day it's been out there today. England resumed this morning with an overnight total of 7. Gower was good to go for 3, and Gatting 5. Botham 4. Down to Nat without scoring. Bringing the total up to a miserly nineteen.
N-n-nineteen. Nineteen. N-n-n-n-nineteen. Nineteen.
(Nineteen)
Nineteen.
Oh, there's a bus just going down the road, turning left at traffic lights. I think, ah yes, it's a number nineteen.
(Nineteen)
I just said that! Who let that woman in here?
(Video 2:15-2:20 definitely differs slightly from audio 2:00-2:05: Oh, there's a bus just going down the Edgeware Road, turning left at traffic lights. I can't see what the number is, I think it's a number nineteen!)
In the fifth test, England scored 202 in their second innings. Which is an average of just under nineteen. The West Indies scored n-n-n-n-three hundred and forty six.
The only batsman able to cope with a new attack was Chris Broad, who adopted a new stance:
S-s-s-s-side on. Side on.
(Appears in live video, not the mix I have on an ancient tape)
"S-s-s-s-side on. Side on.
Bodyline. Bodyline.
S-s-s-s-side bottom. Side bottom.
Bodyline. Bodyline.")
None of them received a standing ovation. None of them. None of them.
None of them received a standing ovation. None of them. None of them.
N-n-n-n...
-I think you've made your point actually.
-Well, there was one-
Shut up, Bill!
And sitting with me in the commentary box is Jim Laker, who holds the record for the most wickets taken in a test match. How many was it, Jim?
Nineteen.
(Silly question, really!)
It's a long, slow, lazy delivery. But it's the best I can do.
Mike Gatting's just hit a four,
It's the best drop we've seen,
Reduction of the enemy lead,
Now it's down to nineteen.
Bowled.
L.B.W.
Caught,
Run out,
Hit wicket,
Stumped,
Retired hurt,
Howzat?
Not out!
Edit: I'm with karen - it's "bowled straight into Woodfull".

I found a few changes (suspect its the accent confusing you!)
It's Oval not Alborough
he's bowled straight ?? caught him nastily on the back of the head? Still can't catch this part!
He wasn't even aiming at the stumps
Gower (not Gow) was first to go for 3

There again the number 19 bus does not go down (or up) the Edgwade Road.

I am right in thinking that its Edgeware Road next to one of the cricket grounds?

Edgware Road is close to Lord's Cricket Ground, but there are easier ways to reach the ground than using that said route.
I know, let me hear the song, yes Rory does say "Oval" and "Edgware Road".

That and a complete ignorance of cricket! (And some minor differences between the audio version I have from an ancient cassette tape, and the live version performed in the linked video.)

I'll bet this is also a reference to Andy Lloyd, who was "retired hurt".

That's what I think as well. Possibly there is a reference to 'Marshall' who was the bowler at the time.

Can anyone - no matter how dead this thread may appear in 2018 or whenever the reader hits it - find any video of this incident on YouTube? I know so little of cricket that I can't get anywhere searching for it. The song we're working on came out close enough in time to the series in question that The Commentators may have had a VHS tape of the match, and did their own impressions of the commentators.
Note to future historians: That's a guess on my part. I have no idea what Rory Bremner actually used as the basis for the lines in the song.

Today January 14th happens to be the 89th anniversary of the controversial Bodyline cricket tactics used by Douglas Jardine's England peaks when Australian captain Bill Woodfull was hit in the heart back in 1933.

This post reminded me of this thread. And so I started listening and reading through the lyrics again.
This post of Philip's which I don't think I'd really processed properly possibly contains a clue to a bit of the missing lyrics.

Sounded to me this time as
