Subject: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

For some reason, this line in the title song always struck me funny:

"Hunting the horny back toad."

It seemed like an odd lyric to use in a song.  Even odder to hear someone sing along with it.

(Okay I'm back for the night...er..day)

Now that you mention it, that is a very odd thing to say or sing.
Elton and Bernie could come up with some of the silliest crap and best songs ever in the '70s. Sort of like Stevie Wonder in the '80s. Their good stuff far exceeds their bad.

GYBR is still a good song.

That whole album is full of great songs

1. Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding
2. Candle in the Wind
3. Bennie and the Jets
4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
5. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting

I always liked the song 'Harmony', although I have never been able to pinpoint why.

The fact that they wrote and recorded all those songs within 2 weeks is a phenomenal feat! At least that is what the liner notes on the CD say.

'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' and 'Captain Fantastic' are my favorite Elton John albums.

I doubt Bernie Taupin knew much about it, but as a kid in the 60's in Central Texas, we all had pet "horny toads."  They're pretty rare now but easy to find and catch in those days, and in no time got used to being handled.  Arliss traded his to the Chuck Connors character for "Old Yeller."

I'm sure they were just looking for a "hick" sounding line to rhyme with the title.

Quoting:
Arliss traded his to the Chuck Connors character for "Old Yeller."
End Quote

This might have been where Bernie got it from.  He was a big fan of Westerns & American culture, as evidenced by Roy Rogers, one of my favourites from the album.

It may make a little more sense if you connect it to the line before:

"Back to the howling old owl in the woods (that is)
Hunting the horny backed toad."

Parentheses added, of course.
