Subject: confusion about Beatles lyrics, Hard Day's Night

Written By: BrianNorth on 01/24/04 at 10:50 p.m.

I found my way here from the amiright.com site.
I'm very curious about a certain misunderstanding regarding Beatles lyrics, from the song Hard Day's Night.  Below is a cut and paste from amiright:

Misheard Lyrics: So why I love to come home?
Correct Lyrics:   So why on earth should I moan?

I recently got involved with a music act doing various covers and this song came up and I went looking for the lyrics.  I was surprised to find various examples on the net of the lyrics containing the text "So why on earth should I moan?", I somehow always thought the "love to come home" words were correct.  I started checking various printed publications, some which should be very reputable, Hal Leonard, my vintage Beatlemania 1963-1966 book (Maclen Music Inc from the ATV music group, USA and Canada agent for Warner Bros. Publications Inc.), various other music books, and they ALL had the lyric as "why I love to come home".
I finally pulled out the infamous Beatles orange double album and gave the song an actual listen, and lo and beyond it really does sound like they are saying "why on earth should I moan".
So my question is basically "What is going on here???"  How is it that such a variety of publications (and thus people) have had it wrong?  It's not as if only I was misinformed, it's as if there was some kind of source of significant misinformation out there.  Was there maybe some other USA specific release of that song that did in fact have the different lyric?
...I'm sort of at the point of having to go back to the musicians in question and say "You know when I told you that you had the wrong lyrics, in that line in that Beatles song?, Well it seems you were right all along".  I guess I'm looking for some kind of intelligent explanation for all of this...

If anyone has any possible idea/explanation as to the source of this confusion, what I see as a widespread reference to the wrong lyric in so many printed music books, I would be very happy to hear from you.  Thanks.

Easy. Once someone got it written down, everyone else started copying them.

here are the lyrics to the British version

It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog.
It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log.
But when I get home to you,
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright.
You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things.
And it's worth it just to here you say,
You're gonna give me everything.
So why on earth should I moan,
'Cos when I get you alone
You know I feel okay.
When I'm home everything seems to be right.
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah.
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog.
It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log.
But when I get home to you,
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright.
So why on earth should I moan,
'Cos when I get you alone
You know I feel okay.
When I'm home everything seems to be right.
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah.
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog.
It's been a hard day's night,
I should be sleeping like a log.
But when I get home to you,
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright.
You know I feel alright,
You know I feel alright.

I don't know if a different version was released in the US.  I guess you need to find someone with an original 45
