For what it's worth, Mac Rebennack ("Dr. John"), who says he was on the session, has verified this "urban legend" -- he says that the words were, indeed, supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden," but the boys couldn't get their mouths around it.
Thus his name for them --"Iron Butterfingers."

Yep, and the lead singer, whose name has slipped my mind, was drunk while recording it, and slurred the lyrics.
