Subject: Question About Santana Song

Written By: lebeiw15 on 05/31/03 at 07:34 p.m.

May be a stupid question, but is that Carlos singing in "Winning"?  Shows how big a fan I am, huh.   ::)  I am just curious, so thanks for your help.   ;)   :)

I dont think so...Carlos doesnt sing (except for little pieces of "maria Maria")..I dont think it was Greg Rollie since he had left with Neal Scorn (that was probably spelt wrong) and formed Journey in the late 70s, and had already left Journey at that point too...so basicly , I dont know...

its probably one of those two guys hes got singing for him now

Greg Rollie and Neal Schon both left Santana in 1972, although Greg did come back to play keyboards for the 'Viva Santana' Tour in 1988.  Journey was formed in 1973. The voice for Santana's "Winning" is Alex Litgerwood.  Alex recorded and co-wrote eight albums for Santana: MARATHON, ZEBOP!,
BEYOND APPEARANCES, VIVA SANTANA, SHANGO, SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH, MILAGRO and SACRED FIRE.

Here is a list of Santana vocalists and the years they 'served' 8)
Gregg Rolie - Keyboards/Vocals-1966-72
Leon Thomas - 1973
Leon Patillo - 1974-75
Greg Walker - 1975-76, 1976-79, 1983-85
Luther Rabb - 1976
Joel Badie - 1976
Alex Ligertwood - 1979-83, 1984-85, 1987, 1989-91, 1992-94
Buddy Miles - 1986, 1987
Tony Lindsay - 1991, 1995 -
Vorriece Cooper - 1992-93
Curtis Salgado - 1995

Speaking of Santana's vocals, who did the vocals on Oy Como Va?  I always thought Carlos did that vocal.

Also... does anybody have the lyrics and, if so, know what they mean in English?  :-/

Oye Como Va is a great song... one of my favorites next to Winning... here are the lyrics.

Oye como va
Me  ritmo
Bueno pa gozar
Mulatta

I think he says it three time throughout the whole song..

I went to http://dictionary.reference.com/translate/text.html and translated the word "Oye Como Va" from English to Spanish... and it said it means "it hears as it goes"..  ???  Ah well, it's the instrumentals that I like in that song, not the lyrics  :)

actully, now that I think about it, Carlos does duel vocals with Greg...I remember seeing him performing this song and both of them were doing the vocals.......

That is correct.  Carlos and Greg share the vocal credits on Oye Coma Va.  The song is from ABRAXAS (imo:  the best Santana album, if I had to pick), recorded in San Fran 1970.

Thanks for the compliment, Billy_Florio.   ;D

So it looks like we all agree here that Abraxas is the best Santana album?    :)

Actually, I don't even have the album itself, but I have most of the songs off the album on various CDs... I think I can get it for cheap at a used CD place, it's probably going to be the next CD I buy, either that or Santana's Greatest Hits Vol. 1... or Supertramp... or Weird Al.  Ahh I don't know

is Santana's greatest hits Vol 1 the one with the dove on the front?  If so, I think I have the vinyl record......its missing a little bit....

I have Abraxas on Cassette..its worth it.....

I dont think Supertramp has any supierior albums.....they only have a bunch of good songs....unless you find a good greatest hits album, then dont bother with getting the album.......
well, i guess "Breakfast in america" and "Crime of the century" are considered good supertramp albums.....

Agreed.  Supertramp's Breakfast in America kicked ass.  When it first came out  it had this quirky sound, nothing like anything out at the time.

Much of it still sounds fresh  8) 24 years later.  :D

Santana's Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is the one with the red cover, I think it actually might be called the Essential Santana now that I think of it, but I'm pretty sure it's Greatest Hits Vol. 1... and Vol. 2 is the purple cover...

I was planning on getting either a Supertramp greatest hits album, or, like you said, Breakfast in America.  I've listened to a lot of it and it sounds good.

What albums y'all got from Santana anyway?  Oh, Supernatural and Shaman are not as good as their older stuff BTW, but they are still fun to listen to.

And the one with the dove is just called "Santana's Greatest Hits", it's got like nine songs on it.

Fortunately, both of these artists have been recently remastered; and while Santana has a gazillion discs out there, the selection of domestic Supertramp is rather limited.

My personal recommendation for a Santana compilation would be "The Essential Santana".  It is a 2-disc limited edition set that retails for about $22, under $10 for a good, used copy.  .  I don't own the last 2 "Santana and Friends" CDs...

As for Supertramp-- Like I said, the product is limited.  Economically, I'd go with Breakfast In America and Best Of, vol 1 only.  Volume 2 only if you find yourself thinking they are the greatest thing since vaseline in a tube.   8)

Ive got Abraxas, Santana, Superntural, and apparently Santanas greatest hits.....

and I agree...The essential Santana is a great album, its got all his stuff from his first record label......from the 60s-80s.....

I ended up buying Poodle Hat...   ::) ;)  :D  ;D

Actually, Wal-Mart didn't even HAVE Supertramp, which made me mad... and I was a couple bucks short so I couldn't buy the Essential Santana... so I got Poodle Hat.  I love it!  :)
