Subject: Redesign of amiright, features
nothing's set in stone by any means, and it's been awhile since the last major overhual of the website..
I'm thinking of removing the new parody listings from the homepage, and instead linking to the new parody page. The listing is pretty huge every day now. When it was designed, I only anticipated a dozen or so entries per day. Yesterday, due to missing a Monday update, there were over 100 entries. Tuesday looks like around 50 new entries. I'm pretty sure, that the people who read the new parodies every day will still be able to find them easily enough.
In place of the new parody listings on the front page, I want to start a list of parody authors who have mp3s/audio available on their homepages. I assume this will be a small listing, and will rotate out old links from the front page as newer entries get approved, a lot like the news system on the front page. I'm thinking direct links to songs, with small text descriptions by the authors for individual songs, with a limit of one song per day by author. And maybe a commentary feature on the site for people to leave feedback on the song. I get a lot of requests from people for stuff they can listen to, so this could be a big attention getter.
I'm also going to remove the seperate section for the articles, and instead just add articles under the news section as new ones are released.
The rational behing the above listed changes, is that I want the front page to better highlight all the sections of the website, and not over-emphasize the song parodies, or the misheard lyrics. So I want to re-add in the other sections to some extent. I used to have all the sections on the front page, but I was concerned that it was to complex a page, so I probably won't go that route again.
Also, I want to revamp the existing sections, so that you get a listing of when entries are approved (like the parodies and misheard lyrics). Currently, I think I only display the most recent 25 submissions on the "new" page for each section like "Band Pseudonyms", and don't break them down by when they were approved.
I don't have to remove the parody listings from the front page in order to fit the links to parody mp3s, I can do both, I just wonder if the current listing is really all that useful anymore.

I can see what you mean about the new parody listing taking over the front page: if it were to change, I'd probably end up with a link to the new parodies bit anyway.
I like the idea of mp3 links - one question, though: would you be able to host the mp3's themselves? The 5MB of webspace I get has always seemed like lots... until a couple of songs need storing :-( And another question: would you be able to keep a log (or a count, anyway) of mp3 downloads?

I like the idea of the mp3/wav listings on the front...although I'm biased because I have them =) I'd probably redesign my personal page as well so it's actually readable. Would you make any requirements for the pages listed in this section (i.e. how developed would these webpages need to be for you to list them?)
No problem with the new entries being taken off, although the link to them should be prominent/easy to find (big). A far-fetched idea would be to have a much smaller section still on the front page that shows 5 of the new parodies at a time and cycles through them (show 5 for a few seconds, then show a different 5, etc). Don't know how realistic that is, or how much work it would take.

I could probably write something to track how often the links are clicked.. but hosting the files myself is probably unrealstic, I'd max out my bandwidth very quickly.. Which is why I'd have to place a link in there to report bad links, so that the page can age more gracefully..

The site itself doesn't need to be anything complex, so long as the audio file is easily spotted and played.

yeah, it certainly would be a big link.. I thought about rotating the parodies on the front page, I used to do something similar for the misheard lyrics section. I just don't think it's worth the server ovehead. Maybe, I could put the weekly top voted parodies on the front page again.. though the last time I did that, cheating became a huge issue.
people who go the extra step to record their parodies deserve a little extra recognition in my eyes.. I know most people probably can't do it, and might feel a little slighted by not getting displayed on the front page, but I think it's fair..
