Subject: Trying to find a song from my childhood
Hey all !
I have been trying to track down a song I had on a 45 back in the early 70's (which my dear brother lent out to a 'friend' who never returned it) >:(
I was some sort of comedy record - I think it was called
"Big Bad Bruce" or something similar.
From what I can remember Bruce was portrayed as being slightly effeminate, and he worked in his mother's hairdressing salon. ::) Yeah I know, wouldn't pass as acceptable these days ! ;D
There are some specific lyrics I can remember :
Then came the day of the terrible fire
Something went wrong with the number five dryer
(something blah blah etc etc)
Big bad Brucie just-a stand in the flames
That's Bruce....
Yeah I know it sounds corny and all, but this has been bugging me for decades.
Does anyone know what I am talking about ?
The only other thing I remember was that the 45 had a green label (that narrows it down huh ? :D)
Thanks for any assistance you can give me !

You were extremely close. The song is called "Big Bad John" and it's by Steve Greenberg. It is kinda funny. Enjoy! :)

Big bad John is by Jimmy Dean (the saugage guy), but that is not the song he's thinking of...

Wow ! Alright !
The moment I saw the name Steve Greenberg I thought YEAH ;D
Because I remember making that connection as a kid with the name and the colour of the label.
Except Big Bad JOHN ?
I am sure it was Bruce ! I remember the alliteration.
Anyway thanks guys ! And Squirrel, whomever you are behind that mask ! ;)
Now it's off to Kazaa where I won't find it ! :)

FBVP, I have the definitive answer for you: Your "mystery song" is "Big Bruce" by Steve Greenberg, a minor hit here in the U.S. in the Summer of '69. The song is described in one of my music reference books as a "gay" parody of Jimmy Dean's huge #1 hit from the Fall of '61, "Big Bad John", so that explains the connection w/ that song. The Greenberg single was released on the Trip label here in the U.S., but I don't know about Australia, where you are...
BTW, there was one other hit parody of Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John": In the Winter of '62, Phil McLean scored a moderate hit here in the U.S. w/ "Small Sad Sam". So if you liked "Big Bruce", "Small Sad Sam" should be worth checking out as well... :-)
