Subject: Remakes that are an improvement over the original

Written By: Thunderbolt on 03/09/03 at 03:26 p.m.

It's a rare thing. One that comes to mind is "The Metro" by Berlin, remade by System of a Down.

Another would be Lionel Richie's remake of "Lady", which was far better than the version by The Little River Band.

But what to make of the Dixie Chicks remake of "Landslide"?  ??? That one seems to be quite pointless :-/, and does not stand up to Stevie Nix's original (or Stevie's own remake, for that matter).

CCR - I heard it through the Grapevine and Good Golly, Miss Molly.

I also like Michael J. Fox's cover of "Johnny B. Goode", I thought it was the original for the longest time. Not many people know this, but the version you hear on Back to the Future is totally sung and played by him.

What else... there are a lot of other songs I prefer the covers of, but aren't as popular. Primus' "Scissor Man" as well as Les Claypool's "The Awakening" are both great covers of great songs. Suicidal Tendencies re-made a few of their older songs, and I prefer the newer ones. AFI covered "Haloween" by the misfits, and did a wonderful job. The Offspring covering "Smash it Up" (the Damned) did a great job, however I haven't heard the original.

I love hearing covers of songs done in a completely different genre than the original (excluding most punk covers, those get annoying).

Smashing pumpkins landslide is better than the dixie chicks, but nothings as good as the original....

hmmm...well,

While THe SUpremes version is great too, Id say that the Vanilla Fudge's "You keep me hangin' on" is better ..it is my all time favorite cover....

Black Crows "Hard to handle" is better than the original IMO

Big Brother and the holding company's "Piece of my heart" is better thant he version by Aretha Franklins sister, which was the original

Naked eyes "Always something there to remind me" is better than the original by Dionne Wareick, and the same goes for Soft Cells "Tainted love", which is better than Grace Jones version

The Turtles "I aint me babe" is better than Dylans version

This is hard, cause alot of covers are almost equal to the original, or just utter crap (Lady Marmelade comes to mind).....

These are my three favorite remakes:

Linda Ronstadt's "When Will I Be Loved" (the Everly Brothers' version isn't all that bad, but Linda's is better)

Pat Benatar's "You Better Run" (miles better than the original by the Young Rascals)

Smith's "Baby It's You" (the Shirelles' version isn't all that bad, but Smith's version blows it away!)

Im sorry to disagree with you darkjon, but nothing IMo opinion beats Marvin Gayes version!

Now here I agree with you...if youre going to remake a song, do it in a different style..Like Vanilla fudge did, or Blondie did to The Paragons "The tide is high"....dont just remake it the exact same way (ie "I shot the sheriff").....there are about fifty bands out there that cover pink floyd, in all different stlyles..I forget what they are called, but theres one that did all of Dark side and the wall in bluegrass, and one that did Dark Side in regae..they are amazing...The band Hayseed Dixie does bluegrass covers of AC/DC songs..thats just funny

Actually, no, it wasn't. I remember an interview w/ Michael J where he talked about the real performer and I found this:

"The character Marty McFly is credited as a performer on the song
"Johnny B. Goode".  It is actually sung by Mark Campbell with a
guitar solo by Tim May."~from IMDB.com

Two More Remakes
==============

"Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco in 1983.  It was far cooler 8) than Irving Berlin's original version.

"Downtown Train", originally done by Tom Waits, was MUCH BETTER when Rod Stewart re-did it.

I prefer Ben Folds Five's version of "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" to the original BJ Thomas version.

Bah, and bah again.  I do prefer the Ramones' version of Waits' "I Don't Want to Grow Up" though.

Um, those are two completely different songs that just happen to have the same title. I believe you're thinking of Kenny Rogers, who was actually the one who originally recorded the Lionel Richie song (and took it all the way to #1 here in the U.S. in the Fall of '80)...

That would be Gloria Jones (1964), not '70s/'80s model/actress/singer Grace Jones, lol...

Who sang the original of Lady Marmalade, I couldn't stand it. I much prefered the All Saints' version.

The Falls cover of Victoria (The Kinks)

i'm still undecided as to whether i like the didjits' version of "killboy powerhead" more than the offspring's version, but both are pretty cool.  ("cool" in the sense that it's fun to scream and run an jump along to)

you'll probably all kill me, but i think that smash mouth's cover of "i'm a believer" is better than the original.  i dunno, it's faster, which i like...the older one sounded too slow to be happy to me for some reason.

8) :-* :-*I disagree with not liking Labelle's version of "Lady Marmalade"as much as the remake.I was a kid in the 70s and I liked that song.Of course,I didn'yt know that "Voulez vous couchez avec moi?"meant "Do you want to ge to bed with me".!!! :o :o :o :o :oCheers! ;D

Heh heh. I didn't know that one at first. I guess having heard the cover version first gave me an unfairly based opinion.

Don't get me wrong... I LOVE the original, and I've parodied it, but "99 Red Balloons" re-done by Goldfinger I think it was is absolutely awesome. I don't even like hard/punk music that much but I think some of it may be in the initial shock of hearing it... but I think it's awesome. Kinda like weird al and his polkas...

Grand Funk(Railroad)'s cover of "The Loco-Motion" is not only the best version, it's the only good version as far as I'm concerned.

While Sam Cooke's song "Chain Gang" was pretty cool, I think that the version done by The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde, et. al.) was even better.
