Subject: amIright new look for front page

Written By: ChuckyG on 02/26/03 at 08:05 a.m.

my original post on this subject disappeared (the messageboard is suffering lately)

anyways:

http://amiright.com/index2.shtml

I'm looking to move towards a more BLOG like look, with system news rotated in with funny links to music related news stories. I'd like to hear any opinions people have on the new look.

I think it'd be an improvement. It'd definitely make the site a little lighter and funnier.

I like the idea of being able to add comments to the news stories... gives it a good feedback-aware sort of feel...

I had no problems reading it.  I liked the more interactive feel for the news as well.

It is a bit busier, which does make it a bit harder to read...just a thought, but could you tabulate the News and Events bit, something like:

Feb 25 - (amIright News)
amIright Idle First Round Complete  (Comments)

Feb 25 - (Yahoo)
Got a song stuck in your head? You might be neurotic.  (Comments)

that was my fear actually.. I'm going to play with it some more.. I like your idea.. the problem that's always hard to deal with, is text wrapping (since I don't design my sites with a fixed width).. some of my initial designs were not this pretty, trust me..

man, Phil.. you nailed the design on the head.. I tried it your way and it looked a lot cleaner.. I guess I should have played a little longer with it before I gave up on the design aspect..

I cleaned up all the functionality with it, and everything appears to work the way *I* want it to.. I hope everyone else likes it >grin< It even validates (mostly) with my HTML stynax checker.. so all looks good so far..

I think the site needs links to some of the parody authors pages should be added to Amiright's Links

the authors page is a link on the right hand nav bar of every page.. the links page seems kinda redundant..

did you use the links section? I've been thinking of rotating links to decent websites on the front page, but not sure yet how I want to do it..

Either way, as long as it is at the same site & it doesn't go through a DRAMATIC change, it is fine.

Can I be just a little picky... (I'm like this with my own interface design, too... lucky I don't get to do too many web pages)

1. Dump the parentheses, especially for the title links - can you make the title bold, too, just to make it stand out a bit, or possibly darken the shade of the background a little.

2. Add just a little more space between articles, say about twice what you have already

Irrespective of the above, I'd say it's looking pretty good

I agree on the parentheses, at least for the source.. I think it's ok on the comments link, helps to set it off from the link text..

there was supposed to be more space between entries, I accidently removed it while cleaning up some bad html code, so I added it back in..

I've tried the whole title in all bold.. a couple of times during the design too, but it just overpowers too much.. plus some news links may be longer than others, and bold is hard to read for more than a few words.. I bolded the date instead, since it's something people will want to reference..

I'd darken the background, but to be honest, I think it may be too dark already (not enough contrast between the font and the background, lessens the readability) I should probably play with the value of the color, and use something with less grey in it.. I'm taking a color theory class right now, so I may be playing a little with the site colors in the future anyways.. I'm not really happy with the current color scheme of the site at all.. (thank god it's all in style sheets)

either way.. I'm pretty happy with the overall look of things, and I'm just making tweeks at this point (and of course welcome any design feedback I'm given, even if I don't use all of it >grin<).. so the front page of the site will change shortly..
